2024 Charity Ball News

On behalf of the families we serve, we would like to give heartfelt thanks to all the people that made this years Charity Ball a huge success! The generosity of our sponsors, donors, volunteers and 250 guests allowed us to raise close to $87,000! It is because of this generosity that CRS is able to continue our mission of diminishing the effects of poverty in Avon and Avon Lake! For a complete list of sponsors and auction donors, please visit the CRS website.

2024 John T. Shook Award

Congratulations to Ron Jantz, recipient of the 2024 John T. Shook Community Service Award which was presented at the Annual Charity Ball on April 20, 2024. Ron demonstrates unselfish leadership, dedication, creativity, cooperation, and hard work in his service to others, evident in everything he does! CRS was fortunate to benefit from his talents, as he served as the Master of Ceremonies and auctioneer of the Charity Ball from 2011 – 2023. Over many years, Ron has generously volunteered his time and talent to numerous local organizations, including Leadership Lorain County, the Boys and Girls Club of Lorain County, Christ Evangelical Church, Camp Imagine, Avon Lake Youth Baseball Federation, Avon Lake Booster Club, Avon Lake City Schools, American Cancer Society Life Savers Ball, and many more. Shown here: Pam Ohradzansky, CRS Executive Director, Ron Jantz, Katie Virtue, President, CRS Board of Directors.

The Cleveland area (including Lorain County) ranked third nationally for the highest percentage rent increase. Rents rose here 6.5% between March 2023 and March 2024.

CRS provides rental assistance to residents of Avon and Avon Lake that qualify for services at CRS. In 2023 we assisted with rental expenses 181 times totaling $91,811. This was a 45% increase for rent assistance in 2022.

Mission Moment

We recently received a visit from a man who was with his 3-year old granddaughter. They came to our back door to drop off a donation of items for our food pantry. The man regularly donates to CRS because he grew up in a family of nine and "knows what its like to be hungry." He always drops off his donation anonymously. This is such a beautiful example of teaching his granddaughter the meaning of giving back.

The Meijer Simply Give Spring Campaign is underway and runs through Saturday, June 29, 2024. Stop by the Avon Meijer store and purchase a $10 Simply Give card located at each register check-out. At the end of the campaign, all donations will be converted in to food-only gift cards that CRS can use to purchase items for our food pantry! Since the Avon Meijer store opened in 2019, we have received almost $36,000 in Simply Give cards!

A Great Way to Support CRS

Would your business or organization like to support CRS? Hosting a drive for the CRS food pantry is a great way to help!

We are always in need of staples like peanut butter, jelly, hearty soups, cereal, pasta, pasta sauce and canned chicken/tuna. Or you can get creative and collect specific items based on a theme such as snack foods, breakfast foods, toiletries or cleaning supplies. Another great idea is to have a spice drive. It is such a treat to offer our clients spices that they normally wouldn't be able to purchase for themselves.

If you would like more information about hosting a drive, please email our Pantry Manager, Cece Carlson or call her at 440-933-5639.

CRS has truly been blessed this month with many donations of non-perishable items for our food pantry and specialty items for our Mother's Day Gift Bags.Thank you to the following businesses and organizations:

Avenbury Ladies of the Lake, Avon Lake Giant Eagle, Avon Lake United Church of Christ, Barry Bagels, Christ Church Westshore, Eastview Elementary School, Holy Trinity Parish, Hooks for Hunger, Hunger Network Food Rescue

We are so grateful for all of the donations that help keep our food pantry well stocked. Thank you for making a difference, right here at home!
