Dear Ohio-ACC Colleague,

As the holiday season is upon us, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some Chapter highlights of the last couple of months.

Ohio-ACC Annual Meeting
It was wonderful to see so many of you at the 29th Annual Meeting of the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Cardiology at the Hilton Columbus at Easton on October 12th. Special thanks to Konstantinos Dean Boudoulas, MD, FACC and William R. Colyer, MD, FACC, annual meeting co-chairs, along with their planning committee for putting together such a terrific program. I hope that you will take a moment to look at the great photos from the event. Congratulations to the winners of our very popular Fellow in Training Oral Presentation: First place, Peter Hu, MD, Cleveland Clinic; Second place, Alex Meyer, MD, The Ohio State University. Congratulations to all of our Poster Competition winners ( visit this link and click on the "Posters" tab for a complete listing.).
Ohio Members in Washington
I am pleased to report that we had a delegation of 20 Ohio members attend the ACC Legislative Conference in Washington, DC at the beginning of November. We had the opportunity to meet with Congress and ask them to support issues impacting our patients and our professions:

  • Exercise careful oversight of issues that contribute to administrative burden and detract from patient care, including utilization management tools such as prior authorization.
  • Promote the transition from volume to value by eliminating barriers to participating in alternative payment models and implementing innovative care coordination practices.
  • Increase patient access to cardiac rehabilitation services by building upon past legislation, specifically the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, which included provisions to allow physician assistants, nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists to supervise cardiac, intensive cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs, beginning in 2024.
OHIO ACC Leg Conf 2019
  • Transform cardiovascular care and improve heart health through targeted research programs and legislation to combat the youth tobacco epidemic.

Even if you did not have a chance to go to Washington, DC, you can still contact your legislators about these important issues.

Special thanks to David Stultz, MD, FACC and Anne Albers, MD, FACC for serving as Ohio-ACC Advocacy co-chairs.

I invite you to become an advocate at the Ohio-ACC Legislative Day on May 12, 2020. Take a moment to learn more and register today.

Prior Authorization Resources for You
The number of hours the average physician office spends processing prior authorizations has been increasing year after year, with a recent survey by the American Medical Association revealing almost 15 hours of work per week on average. Prior authorizations have been recognized as a significant burden for physician work load, a cause of patient care delays, and a possible contributor to negative patient outcomes.

The Ohio Chapter of the American College of Cardiology has launched an initiative to provide resources to ease the burden on providers and improve patient care since numerous cardiovascular procedures and medications still require prior authorization from insurers.

Compiled on www.ohioacc.org is a collection of important links, including insurer references, commonly used electronic prior authorization websites, and the American Medical Association prior authorization toolkit website. The site also provides some initial sample denial appeal letters for several common cardiovascular medications; additional agents will be added in the future. Finally, we have developed some sample templates for new drug starts to guide the language used in the prior authorization process. These resources are a work in progress as we look to the feedback from Ohio-ACC members to further refine the materials. The Chapter hopes to develop this into a primary resource for members approaching prior authorizations and ultimately improve patient care.
