Things That Interest Me...and Maybe You (Part 2)

Things that interest me -Travel and Meetings
Yes I love trains and I am glad to see that Amtrak is expanding and improving in many other ways. As you probably know other countries have far better service and it is a more environmentally friendly way to travel. Americans decided they did not really need trains 50-60 years ago , and passenger lines were discontinued cutting off many from travel as a whole, with air travel being out of reach, as the article mentions. The second article is about trains in Europe and how right now they are more important then ever because air travel is a mess over there right now.

First Trip Since Covid?
Maybe you have forgotten what to bring , or maybe there are new things since the world has changed. I am amazed every week things I have forgotten what to do, that we were so ingrained in me before the pandemic. And I’m not just talking about travel!

Speaking of upcoming virtual events...

I have decided to start hosting a monthly “hangout and discuss” Zoom night for members of my CMP community!

The first one will be on Wednesday, August 17 at 8:00 PM ET, and the topics of discussion will be attrition and minimum guarantees. You can ask and answer questions, and share your horror stories of how you learned so others can benefit!
If you plan to attend, please sign up through the google form located in the community.

If you would like to attend but are not a member of the community, you can request to join through the link below! Reminder, only people who have taken a class with me, either directly through my company or through another organization, are eligible to join.

Celebrate Services Day In Philadelphia

Last week I got to be a guest of Philadelphia CVB for Celebrate Services Day! Thanks to Jamie Huckleberry, Director of Destination Services, who invited me to lead a discussion on the current role of Event and Conference Service Managers (ESM/CSM). Jamie (left) is pictured with Dominique Bonds (right), Director of Engagement for the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Diversity, Inclusivity and Safety-----oh and Comfort.
This is an excellent article on the push to get the FAA to create a standard minimum for airplane seat size. Yes larger would be more comfortable for everyone, but this article delves into things I never thought of like does it actually put you in danger?

We all know the industry is hurting for employees in pretty much every position.
Here are three articles that talk about it:
From the Convention Centers
Last minute ‘Curveballs” that a Planner May have to deal with because of the shortage
And Tech Firms Slashing Staff---How will that effect you?

Career

How to Make a Lasting Impression
Although many things have changed about a job search, one that does not is that old saying of “You only have one chance to make a first impression….”

Negotiations are more than Pay
When I work with people in job searches, I find they are frequently fixated on the actual salary. There is so much more to think about.
