Saint Spotlight: St. Francis de Sales | |
|
As noted by Pope Francis in his message for the 57th World Day of Social Communication, "one of the brightest and still fascinating examples of “speaking with the heart” is offered by Saint Francis de Sales, a Doctor of the Church."
Saint Francis lived from 1576-1622. He was born into a noble family in France and received a very thorough education by the Jesuits. His parents had wanted him to begin a career in law, but after a personal crisis, St. Francis turned to Mother Mary to ask for her intercession. Soon after he dedicated his life to God.
The Salesian tradition, developed from both St. Francis and St. Jane, emphasizes the role of the heart. Francis had great insights into the human heart, and when asked about preaching he famously responded: “The lips speak to the ears, but heart speaks to heart (Cor ad Cor Loquitur).” Francis was a model of gentleness who showed great humanity and willingness to dialogue patiently with everyone – especially those who disagreed with him.
Did you know?
- Francis was canonized on April 8, 1665
-
His Feast Day is January 24th
- He is the patron saint of adult education, the deaf, and journalists
- St. Francis has been called the ‘Doctor of Divine Love’
Reflection Question:
What does it mean to have “heart speak to heart”?

Preparing for National Truth and Reconciliation Week
National Truth and Reconciliation Week provides an opportunity to focus on the current realities for Indigenous Peoples, while also remembering their history, as reflected in this year's theme of "Honouring Survivors".
DCDSB is preparing for National Truth and Reconciliation Week, as well as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, which we will be recognizing in our schools on Friday, September 29. As a board, we will wear orange shirts on this day, in order to continue to recognize the efforts of Phyllis Webstad a Stswecem’c Xgat’tem Shuswap First Nation woman who had her new orange shirt taken from her on her first day of residential ‘school’ in 1973.
We will also be engaged in a variety of learning and activities at each of our schools over the next few weeks in honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Throughout the year, DCDSB honours the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and is dedicated to continuing education that increases our understanding of the history, legacies, and current realities of the Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
Families, caregivers and guardians are encouraged to learn more by exploring the Indigenous Education section of the DCDSB website.
The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation also offers information, along with archived videos on a variety of topics, as well an expanded program this year with age-appropriate material for all ages.
A recap of Orange Shirt Day activities from across the board will be included in the October 2023 edition of the DCDSB News.
