Week 26, "Hopey Stories" and some concluding thoughts...

This final essay in the Spiritual Parenting Series is a short, humorous reflection on hope.

LISTEN to "Hopey Stories" by Brian Doyle

After you listen, some questions for reflection...

  1. How would you answer Doyle's concluding question (why hope, how hope)?
  2. What brings you hope?
  3. What hopes do your children inspire in you?
  4. What hopey stories do you have from your life as a parent?

This is the final week of the Spiritual Parenting Series, which began in September 2021 when we came back together in-person for church. I hope you’ve found stories that resonate with you, stories that make you laugh and cry, stories that make you go "mmhmm," or that feel like they could have been written by or about you. And maybe others have gone in one ear and out the other, not feeling relevant to you at all. You can go back and listen to any of the essays, or share them with others, by visiting the Spiritual Parenting Series page on the church website.

In their introduction to the book, the editors say: “Having a child throws us, whether we are willing or not, whether we recognize it or not, onto the path toward spiritual wisdom.” Do you feel like parenting has brought you spiritual wisdom?

During my sabbatical I’m immersing myself in the day to day of parenting, with a little more time than usual for reflection. I look forward to returning in July and exploring our collective wisdom together!

With you on the adventure,

Rev. Beth
