CONTINUOUS MULTIWEEK ON-RAMP CLOSURE FROM TOWNE POINT ROAD TO ROUTE 164 WEST TO BEGIN IN PORTSMOUTH

Multiweek on-ramp closure with detour, starting as early as April 20

PORTSMOUTH — Starting as early as April 20, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are scheduled to close the Towne Point Road on-ramp to Route 164 west for several weeks to allow for sound wall construction activities along Route 164 west from Towne Point Road to a half-mile east of College Drive in Portsmouth. The closure will allow the contractor to remove and replace existing sound wall panels along the ramp.

A signed detour will be in place, directing motorists from Towne Point Road to Route 164 east before exiting at Cedar Lane to access Route 164 west.

The ramp closure is estimated to remain in place through approximately May 2026. All work is weather- and schedule-dependent; therefore, this schedule is subject to change.

This will be the first of two multiweek closures of the on-ramp to complete work at this location. Public notification will be provided in advance of any additional scheduled continuous ramp closures.

Before hitting the road, consider using VDOT's free 511 Virginia traffic tools, or the free 511-integrated Waze GPS app, to check for the most up-to-date road and travel conditions. VDOT’s 511Virginia website and mobile app offer information about construction, traffic, incidents, and congestion, as well as access to traffic cameras, weather-related impacts and more.
