NATIONAL BISON DAY
National Bison Day, on the first Saturday in November, honors one of the most majestic beasts to roam the land.
The official National Mammal of the United States, the iconic North American Bison, has played a cultural, economic and environmental role in the history of the country. Central to the livelihood of Native Americans, they are also a healthy food source and vital to religious ceremonies.
The bison is the largest land mammal in North America, with males weighing up to 2,000 pounds and standing up to 6 feet tall. While cows may be smaller at 1,000 pounds and up to 5 feet tall, they're still mighty powerful. However, Bison only live up to 20 years.
The dark brown to black, thick shaggy coat of the full-grown bison keeps them warm during long, cold winters on the plains. When they're born, the calves sport a reddish coat.
While giant herds once covered the plains, hunters nearly decimated them by the 1800s. Now, bison populate all 50 states living in national parks, refuges and on tribal and private lands.

City Park, Sunday Farmers Market in New OrleansNovember 3, 2024
8 am - 12 pm
New Orleans City Park
Tad Gormley Stadium
Marconi Drive @ Navarre Ave.
Directions and Parking
The Sunday Market is located in the parking lot of Tad Gormley Stadium at the corner of Marconi and Navarre. While the parking lot is closed off to house the market, there is plenty of parking along Marconi and surrounding streets. Please be diligent about following parking signs and only park in clearly marked spaces with perpendicular markings. DO NOT park in the bike lanes, as this makes our market space unsafe to bikers and pedestrians and threatens our ability to continue operating the market here. No parking allowed on the neutral ground. Please don't pull up into the market driveway for recycling pick ups or drop offs. Thank you for understanding!
RTA Bus Route 27: Louisiana passes right by market! Click here to view more details about route 27.
No Cash? No Problem!
All of our vendors accept cash and tokens. Swipe for tokens on-site at the orange Welcome Tent with debit, credit, or EBT SNAP.
Shop with SNAP!
Market Umbrella implements fresh food incentive programs such as Market Match, which doubles SNAP dollars spent at market for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables. Starting January 1st, 2023, market match will be unlimited, allowing us to match each EBT dollar being swiped for on-site at the orange Welcome Tent.
Between June and the end of November, certified market vendors accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers for both seniors and WIC participants. Market Umbrella is able to double FMNP benefits with tokens on-site at the Welcome Tent.

All Saints’ Day and All Souls Day
As we approach Halloween, we are also closing in on All Saints' Day (November 1st) and All Soul's Day (November 2nd) -- also known as the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed and the Day of the Dead. The Catholic Church teaches that the purification of the souls in Purgatory can be hastened by the actions of the faithful on earth.
Thus began the custom in New Orleans of gathering at the tombs of their deceased family members on All Saints' Day to clean and refurbish the exterior façade of the tombs, shown here in an 1885 engraving. Far from solemn, it was quite the community event with friends and neighbors sharing stories of their loved ones, and perhaps a simple meal as they worked.
Sadly, with many families being scattered throughout the country, many tombs have fallen into disrepair as surviving family in many cases is unaware of the existence of a family plot. known as the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed and the Day of the Dead. Snoopy appeared on October 4, 1950, two days after the first Peanuts strip. He was originally Patty's dog before being adopted by Charlie Brown. He was called Snoopy for the first time in the November 10th strip. On March 16, 1952, his thoughts were first shown in a thought balloon. Snoopy first appeared upright on his hind legs on January 9, 1956, when he was shown sliding across a sheet of ice after Shermy and Lucy had first done so.

Master P leads New Orleans 'Walk of Fame' project to honor city's finest along Canal Street
Percy "Master P" Miller, who was named by Mayor Latoya Cantrell as New Orleans' official Entertainment Ambassador in August, is leading a project that aims to lay a Hollywood-style trail of plaques along lower Canal Street to pay homage to the city's finest artists, entrepreneurs and philanthropists.
The first 50 plaques, honoring famous New Orleans natives ranging from Fats Domino and Ellen Degeneres to Tom Benson and Leah Chase, are expected to be put down by Feb. 6, 2025, in time for Super Bowl LIX which is set to kick off at the Caesars Superdome three days later.
"It's time to celebrate our culture and the people from New Orleans that have made a difference and given so much to the world," Miller said via text message.
A City Hall news release said Friday that the city would partner with the 54-year-old rapper and music executive on the project.
"As we continue preparations to host Super Bowl LIX, it is of huge importance that we honor and recognize the diverse group of notable individuals who make up the beautiful fabric of our city," Cantrell said in a prepared statement.
An inaugural plaque designed by local artist Brandan "BMIKE" Odums will be laid sometime before Christmas on the sidewalk outside the Saks Fifth Avenue department store at Canal Place, near the Mississippi River end of Canal Street.
The prototype design for the proposed NOLA Walk of Fame, a project led by Percy "Master P" Miller that aims to lay a trail of Hollywood-style tribute plaques along lower Canal Street. The plaques are designed by New Orleans artist Brandan "BMIKE" Odums.
Courtesy of Operation Restoration
The logistics of the project, including fund raising, is being handled by Operation Restoration, a nonprofit organization run by Syrita Steib, in collaboration with Miller.
The aim is to raise about $6.5 million initially, of which a quarter has already been raised from donors and grants, said Steib.
The first wave of plaques will include Cantrell and Miller, as well as past mayors such as Moon Landrieu and Ernest "Dutch" Morial and contemporary rapper Mia X. There will be markers for Archie, Eli and Peyton Manning, as well as Drew Brees (not New Orleans-born but given a pass).
Steib said the initial approval from the city allows them to lay plaques on the Canal Street pavement along a three-quarter-mile stretch, from Saks to South Rampart Street. An informational kiosk near the first plaque is planned as well as QR codes at the individualized plaques to explain background on the individuals.
"Where Percy decided to take it a step further is that he wants to teach future generations about individuals who will be enshrined on the Walk of Fame by adding it to curriculums in the city's schools," Steib said. They have begun talking to public school officials about how that would work, she said.
The longer-term aim is to build a related museum nearby that will allow visitors to go deeper into the history of New Orleans most famous citizens. That would include interactive displays and multimedia presentations on individuals and themes like the development of jazz in the city, Steib said.
Hollywood style
Irma Thomas, Jon Baptiste and Trombone Shorty are among the first wave of musicians to be honored. Entrepreneurs and philanthropists getting a plaque include Al Copeland, Sidney D. Torres and John Georges, who together with his wife Dathel, owns The Times-Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate.
The New Orleans Chamber of Commerce is also a partner in the project and Steib said they plan to follow the Hollywood model to pay for future installations and maintenance.
In Los Angeles, the Hollywood Chamber collects fees from celebrities or someone sponsoring them to pay for the installation and maintenance of a Walk of Fame star. It currently costs $75,000 for the initial installation of a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, according to the Hollywood Chamber.

Zombie Paintball Returns to NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale
07:00 October 04, 2024
By: Charles Andre Blanchard
Celebrate the Spooky Season
Beginning October 10 and extending until November 2, attendees to Zombie Paintball can celebrate the Halloween season with a monstrous bang (and potentially satisfy their need for speed).
Festivities
This popular seasonal activity once again returns to the premier racing facility in Avondale, this time with an enhanced festival area and zombie-hunting scenes, courtesy of their new partnership with Mardi Gras Productions. The 20-minute experience includes a bus ride to designated target stations, where riders will test their accuracy and try to defeat all the zombie enemies. They are also given a chance to reload their guns and go back through the stations before finishing.
Guests can also explore nearby festivities to celebrate the Halloween season. Food trucks will be present, along with stations for pumpkin carving and face painting. Local craft vendors and more themed-attractions make this a great family-friendly stop this Halloween. For the adults, drink specials will also be offered on several days.
NOTE: The only targets are the zombies. Attendees will not be harmed or shot at. However, children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Pricing & Packages
General admission begins at $22 per person and includes a rental paintball gun and 150 rounds of ammo.
For $45, Guests can purchase the Zombie Paintball + Karting package, which includes the aforementioned rental gun and ammo but also an added go-kart session on the NOLA Motorsports track.
Have a large group? NOLA Motorsports also offers a $650 party package. With this, up to 28 people can skip the line and each receive a commemorative bandana before boarding a private bus and being given the accompanying rental guns and ammo.
For tickets, visit the NOLA Motorsports Park's box office or their website.
Hours & Dates of Operation
The attraction will be open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the following days:

"Dizzy" is the modern equivalent of the word "giddy," capturing that exhilarating feeling of lightheadedness often associated with joy, excitement, or even a bit of confusion. While "giddy" may evoke images of youthful exuberance and carefree moments, "dizzy" encompasses a broader range of sensations, from the thrilling rush of love to the overwhelming joy of success. In contemporary usage, "dizzy" has evolved to express not only physical disorientation but also emotional highs that leave one feeling euphoric and slightly unsteady. It's a vibrant word that reflects the complexities of modern emotions in a fast-paced world.

NATIONAL DEVILED EGG DAY | NOVEMBER 2
National Deviled Egg Day features a favorite hors-d'oeuvre or side dish for parties, holidays, family reunions and potluck dinners. Deviled eggs shine as the star of the show each year on November 2nd.
This well-loved food wows guests during the holidays. Designers have even created specially designed carrying dishes and plates just so you can deliver your deviled eggs safely and in style. The deli section of the grocery store prepares packaged deviled eggs. They can even be found in some convenience stores, too.
Other names for this devilish dish include eggs mimosa, stuffed egg, salad eggs, or dressed egg. To make them, shell hard-boiled eggs, cut them in half, and scoop out the yolk. The yolk is mixed with other ingredients such as mayonnaise and mustard and then added back into the white. The possibilities are endless!
Eggs are quite versatile when it comes to making simple dishes elegant. The deviled egg is another example of taking the humble egg and transforming it with one or two simple ingredients. The final result steals the show. Colorful relishes, spicy peppers, pimentos or savory herbs, elevate deviled eggs to a spectacular and tasty morsel. Additionally, the variety offers entirely new flavor profiles demonstrating just how delicious this family favorite can be.
Adding Variety
Other approaches make them a little more creamy with sour cream. Do you like things a little more tart? Try adding vinegar to the filling. Depending on how you make them, it may be possible to satisfy just about every palate. From the traditional paprika garnish to crunchy bacon, or a little caviar, anchovy or herring, there is some devilish experimenting any cook can do.
The first known print reference referring to the term “deviled” about food, appeared in 1786. By the 19th century, devilish referred to spicy or zesty food. The term also applied to eggs prepared with mustard, pepper, or other ingredients stuffed in the yolk cavity.

Nachos were named after their inventor, and so were these 9 other items
Published on November 2, 2024
Credit: tarheelgarden
No, Jacuzzis weren’t invented in a northern Italian town named Iacuzzi. Some everyday words like "Pilates" or "leotard" might sound like far-off places in European countries, but these labels don’t have geographical origins. Some creations and concepts were taken up so quickly, that society ignored the monickers their inventors had assigned to them, and named them after the person instead. So, who were Nacho, Theremin, and Mausolus? Let’s dive into these 10 stories to find out.
1Pilates
Credit: Ahmet Kurt
Have you noticed that the word "Pilates" is often capitalized? It should be, because it’s a proper noun: the famous exercise was developed by the German physical trainer Joseph Pilates.
The son of a gymnast and a naturopath, Pilates spent four years at the Knockaloe internment camp on the Isle of Man during World War I. There, he developed a series of exercises to train the mind as well as the body, which he practiced and taught to his fellow internees.
The workout –which, its creator made clear, is not a therapy– focuses on breathwork and training flexibility and strength, not unlike modern yoga. In his time, Joseph Pilates named it Contrology, because he referred to it as "the art of controlled movement."
2Jacuzzi
Credit: Jonathan Borba
The Jacuzzis were an immigrant Italian family of inventors before the name became the trademarked label for hot tubs. The company was founded in America in 1915 and named after the surname of the seven brothers who ran it. Back in northern Italy, their official name was Iacuzzi, but it was misspelled in immigration.
Originally, Jacuzzi developed aviation products, mainly cabins for transporting mail in planes. They decided to abandon the industry, however, after one of the brothers was tragically killed in a plane crash. They diversified into water pumps, which became the most famous of their inventions: a hot tub for hydrotherapy. Candido Jacuzzi developed it as a therapeutic aid to treat his son’s rheumatic arthritis and patented it in 1952.
3Nachos
Credit: Coffeefy Workafe
Have you ever met someone called "Nacho"? It’s the short nickname for "Ignacio," a very popular name in Spanish-speaking countries. That’s what’s at the core of the story behind the famous snack.
In 1943, the Mexican maître d’ Ignacio Anaya worked at a restaurant on the border between Piedras Negras, Mexico, and Eagle Pass, Texas. Legend has it that, one day, unable to find the cook, he improvised a dish with fried corn tortilla pieces, shredded cheese, and jalapeño pepper, which he served to American diners.
The dish was a success and, when asked what it was called, Anaya joked that they could call it "Nacho’s Special" after himself. In a few years, he had opened a restaurant and the popularity of the simple dish had spread throughout Texas and the southern US.
4Theremin
Credit: Pawel Czerwinski
You may not know what a Theremin looks like, but you certainly have heard of it. This electronic musical instrument has a synthesized whistling sound that we now all associate with eerie scenes in science fiction and horror movies.
Léon Theremin was a Russian physicist who stumbled upon this invention while trying to craft a proximity sensor for the Soviet government in 1920. He eventually discovered that the movement of his hands could manipulate sound waves, and so the strange instrument was born. Another name given to it was "etherphone."
Famous musicians, from Dmitri Shostakovich to Frank Zappa and even the Rolling Stones, have used this instrument, which lends itself to an interesting stage performance and other-worldly sound.
5Mausoleum
Credit: Roney John
Yes, mausolea are an ancient concept. But that doesn’t mean we have forgotten the man who commissioned the first one.
Mausolus was a Persian governor of the region of Caria around 350 B.C. While he still lived, he began the construction of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, a monumental above-ground chamber where he and his wife Artemisia would be buried. Greek architects and sculptors of the time were summoned to work on the project. The resulting structure was so impressive that the term "mausoleum" came to name similar fastous burial monuments.
Nothing but ruins remain of Mausolus’ original resting place, but the type of tomb stuck with humanity. One of the most famous and emblematic mausoleums in the world is the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.
6Leotard
Credit: Andrea Piacquadio
The one-piece thighs were invented by the French acrobat Jules Léotard in the 19th century. He notably used to wear a close-fitting outfit from his upper legs to his shoulders while performing daring trapeze acts. This suit he had designed, stretchy and snug, allowed for flexibility and movement. Jules called them maillots as was custom back then in France, but the look had become so iconic that, following his death in 1870, people started referring to them as "leotards."
Many sporting activities use a variation of leotards, like gymnastics, ballet, yoga, or figure skating. In fact, the one-piece swimsuits we know today, which were introduced in the 1920s, derive from this piece of clothing.
7Guillotine
Credit: charlemagne
The gruesome device that became associated with the French Revolution was not designed, as you might think, by Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin. In fact, Guillotin was a French physician who was opposed to the death penalty and so, in 1789, proposed introducing a more humane way of execution than the ones carried out in the late 18th century.
There are records of the device going as far back as 1210, but for some reason, Guillotin’s name remained unfortunately linked to it. The descendants of Dr. Joseph-Ignace petitioned to have the name of the artifact officially changed, but this proved difficult and the label persists.
8Saxophone
Credit: cottonbro studio
Adolphe Sax was a Belgian musician and instrument maker trying to come up with a family of instruments that would bridge the gap between the woodwind and brass sections. He first started fiddling with a bass clarinet, experimenting with its acoustics and keys, and eventually, in the 1840s, introduced a new instrument which would be known as "saxophone."
Its first incorporation was in French and British military bands, and the rich, powerful tone of the instrument caught people’s attention. Slowly, the instrument was introduced in conservatories and incorporated experimentally in orchestral compositions, eventually reaching the United States, where its popularity never waned.
9Pulaski
Credit: Nejc Soklič
An ax on one side, an adze on the other. Both tools had been used by humans for millennia, but no one had combined them in one until 1911.
Edward "Ed" Pulaski was a U.S. Forest Service ranger in the early 20th century. In 1910, leading a crew of firefighters, he was trapped in the Great Fire of Idaho which he barely escaped by leading the men to an abandoned mine. After this heroic but harrowing experience, Pulaski set himself to develop a device that would help confront wildfires.
Today we know that Pulaskis can cut wood and roots and dig soil, which means we can easily carve a firebreak with one. Despite this life-saving invention, Pulaski never profited from it and lived modestly. The mine where he saved the firefighting crew is now remembered as a historic site, the Pulaski Tunnel Trail.
10Zeppelin
Credit: Andreas Weilguny
Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin was responsible for designing this type of rigid airship. The engineer had spent years toward the end of the 19th century laying out and perfecting the model, which was launched in the year 1900.
The airships were seen as futuristic and luxurious, though they quickly became used for civilian travel and military operations. Owing to the success of this design, many rigid airships came to be known as "zeppelins" by extension.

November 2nd Celebrated History
1920
For several reasons, the 1920 election is notable. Thanks to the passing of the 19th amendment, women voted in a presidential election for the first time. Of the 100 signers of the Declaration of Sentiments at the 1848 Women's Rights Convention, only one lived to see the day - Charlotte Woodward Pierce.
The voters elected Warren G. Harding as president.
The KDKA radio station in Pittsburgh becomes one of the first to broadcast voting returns.
1931
At a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Akron, OH, Dupont announced the development of synthetic rubber. Notre Dame priest, Rev Julius Arthur Nieuwland, is credited with the discovery of the process. Synthetic rubber is more elastic, flexible, and heat and cold tolerant than natural rubber. The discovery improved options for many products throughout industry.
1947
For the first and only time, Howard Hughes pilots the Spruce Goose on its only flight. Designated the H-4, the entirely wooden plane was larger than any other aircraft at the time. Hughes piloted the plane for one minute. He reached an altitude of 70 feet and flew for just over one mile.
1948
Harry S. Truman wins re-election in an upset against Thomas E. Dewey. Pollsters were so certain of Dewey's win that the Chicago Daily Tribune published its paper with the headline "Dewey Defeats Truman!"
2000
American William Shepherd and Russians Sergei Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko become the first International Space Station residents when their Soyuz spacecraft links up.

New Orleans Uncovered
Derby Gisclair
Lafayette Square
After Jackson Square (Place d’Armes), Lafayette Square is the second oldest public square in New Orleans. This image was taken circa 1901 - 1905 from the St. Charles Street side. Notice the large Belgian Sett stones that pave St. Charles. The statue of Henry Clay in the center had been relocated in 1900 from Canal Street and has already been terraced and landscaped. However, the caretakers are in the process of landscaping the area around the newly installed bust of John McDonough in the foreground. In the background at center is St. Patrick’s Hall, the old post office and court building, with the Park View Hotel to the right. The unusual smaller trident-looking pole that the mule is tethered to on the bottom right of the image is a street light whose globes are missing for some reason, probably being repaired and replaced.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,November 4
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Get out your lederhosen, spruce up your dirndls and prepare to eat and drink German style — It’s time for Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s! Oktoberfest is an annual tradition that runs for 6 weeks, every Wednesday and Thursday, at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell. It starts on Oktober 2, 2024 and ends on November 7, 2024. That’s right… Oktoberfest is so much fun that it spills over into November!
There is a different Oktoberfest meal available each week (while supplies last):
APPETIZERS
- Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfel Sosse 8.75 (German Potato Pancake with Apple Sauce)
- Maultaschen in Brühe mit Gerösteten Zwiebeln 10.95 (German Ravioli in Broth)
- Nürnbergerle 10.25 (3 small Bratwust with Sauerkraut and Pretzel)
- Riesenbrezel 10.00 (Giant Pretzel with mustard)
- Vesper Teller 14.50 (Assorted meats & cheeses served with pickle, radish, onion, mustard and pretzel)
- Weisswurst 10.25 (White Sausage served with pretzel and sweet mustard)
- Wurstsalat 9.25 (Chopped German Salami, Cold Cuts, Cheeses, Pickles and Onion tossed in Vinaigrette)
- It’s the Chef’s Choice which appetizers will be available each week. Stay tuned!
ENTREES & DESSERTS (A different meal is available each week of Oktoberfest.)
- 10/30/24 & 10/31/24 — Schweinshaxe, Bayerischkraut und Brezel 21.50 (Pork Hind Shank/Ham Hock, Smothered Cabbage and Pretzel); Apfel Strudel mit Vanille Eis 7.25 (Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream)
11/6/24 & 11/7/24 — Wiener Schnitzel und Geröstet Semmelknödel mit Pilzrahmsoße, Gemischtem Salat und Brezel 19.50 (Breaded Thin Pork Loin and Dumpling with Mushroom Cream Sauce, Salad and Pretzel); Schwarzwälderkirschtorte 7.25 (Black Forest Cake)
The German expertise comes from Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer who is a native of Germany. He grew-up in the hamlet of Bächlingen where his family still lives today. The village was established in 950 AD and boasts a grand population of around 150 people.
“It’s an honor to share my German heritage with everyone through the recipes that I grew up with,” said Middendorf’s Owner Horst Pfeifer. “I think Louis Middendorf would have been so happy to see Oktoberfest here at the restaurant. Louis was also from Germany, and he founded Middendorf’s back in 1934 with his wife, Josie. It’s funny because Middendorf’s is so widely known for seafood that a lot of people don’t realize that Middendorf is actually a German name.”
- During Oktoberfest, there is a different German meal available each week for lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last). Guests who eat an Oktoberfest meal for all six weeks will receive an Oktoberfest Prize! Punch cards must be punched each week and turned in on the final week.
- The full regular menu is also available for guests. So, you can have a German meal, and your friend can have the Thin Fried Catfish. Everyone’s happy!
- Of course, we have a great selection of German beer and liqueur to go with your German meal (see below).
- Authentic German music is also in store for Oktoberfest. We’ll have live accordion music every night of Oktoberfest, 4:30pm-8:30pm. In Manchac, David C. Symons will join us. In Slidell, Will Robichaux will play for the 1st week, and then for the next 5 weeks, it will be Greg Speck (aka Captain Squeeze).
- Join in the fun by dressing up in your favorite lederhosen, dirndls and German accessories just like our front of house staff. We’ll have a great variety of hats and souvenirs in our gift shop.

LSU football's matchup against Alabama on Nov. 9 will kickoff at 6:30 p.m. on ABC, the Southeastern Conference
This will be the second consecutive game LSU will play on ABC in primetime.
LSU faced Alabama at the same time the past two seasons. Last seasons game was on CBS.
The Crimson Tide took down LSU 42-28 in Tuscaloosa a year ago after the Tigers upset Alabama in Baton Rouge in 2022, 32-31 in overtime.
Alabama leads the all-time series against LSU with a 56-27-5 record. It has won 13 of the past 15 head-to-head matchups.
The Tigers lost their second game of the year this past weekend to Texas A&M, falling 38-23 in College Station.
LSU held a 17-7 lead at halftime but three interceptions from redshirt junior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and the Aggies switching quarterbacks — replacing Conner Weigman with Marcel Reed — jolted a 31-6 run for Texas A&M in the second

Save the Date for Bayou St. John Friendsgiving! 🌿
Date: Saturday, November 23, 2024
Time: 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Location: The Broadside
Celebrate the spirit of community and ecological stewardship this November 23 at the Bayou St. John Friendsgiving fundraiser! This inaugural event supports the Friends of Bayou St. John’s mission to preserve and protect our beloved bayou. Our goal is to raise $50,000. As we encounter increasing financial challenges, your support is essential in helping us sustain our mission to preserve and protect our beloved bayou and to continue the Bayou Boogaloo Music Festival!
Funds raised will directly support expanded litter and invasive species cleanups, environmental education programs, native planting and beautification efforts, and the creation of a new hotline to report litter and invasive species in Bayou St. John. Additionally, your support will help ensure that next year’s Bayou Boogaloo Festival is our best yet!
Join us for a night of live music, comedy, cabaret and silent and live auctions filled with local treasures—all while supporting a cleaner, healthier Bayou St. John for all New Orleanians.
🎉 Event Highlights:

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana
For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
