Planting During a Heat Wave: Cooler Weather is Coming
Fall is usually a great time to plant a water-wise, fire-wise landscape. While Southern California is experiencing another heat wave, cooler weather and seasonal rain should arrive soon, creating better conditions for new plants to become established. Until then, continue watering newly planted plants and use a smart irrigation timer to apply water efficiently. If possible, wait until the hottest weather passes before planting.
When you are ready to plant, choose varieties that are well suited to our Mediterranean climate and your garden’s specific conditions. With El Niño conditions expected this year, larger shrubs and trees may be better choices before the rainy season. Consider waiting until early spring to plant smaller seedlings and annuals. Be sure to check each plant’s mature size so it has enough room to grow.
Fire safety is also an important part of landscape planning. Avoid planting trees, woody shrubs, or hedges within five feet of your home or patio, and maintain that clearance around existing trees. Remove dead, damaged, and diseased branches. Low-flow drip irrigation in planters near your home’s foundation can reduce overspray, protect your walls, and limit damage that may allow embers into your home.
