Check out this weeks news & updates...

This week is “Gambling Day” in the House!

We have 5 bills of interest being heard on Thursday, March 5 and your testimony is important! Thank you to everyone who is joining us in Annapolis on Thursday to testify in person. If you can’t make it, legislators still need to hear from you. There are two ways you can participate in the March 5 hearings from home:

1. Are you available to write your testimony and upload it on the Maryland General Assembly website tomorrow?

2. If writing isn’t your thing, or you don’t have time, you can simply go to the Maryland General Assembly website tomorrow and click a button to share whether you are in favor or opposed to a particular bill.

Below is a step-by-step video guide to help you take either of those steps and if you have questions after watching that video, you can email Blair Inniss: binniss@law.umaryland.edu for individual help.

Opportunities to Testify Coming Up

Here are the bills with the highest need for testimony, you can take the steps above for each of them or whichever one(s) speak to you most. But here’s the important part, we all have to get this done tomorrow, Tuesday, March 3 between 10:00AM-6:00PM. After that, we cannot submit testimony on the bills being heard on March 5.

HB1255/SB 761 Expansion of Commercial Gaming - Internet Gaming Referendum

  • Do you oppose internet casinos in Maryland? Submit unfavorable testimony on this bill.

HB 1343 Internet Gaming - Authorization and Implementation

  • Another internet casinos bill. You can submit the same testimony for this bill and HB1255 above.

HB 1409/SB 862 Gaming - Problem Gambling - Prevalence Study and Fund Revenue

  • This bill would require sportsbooks and fantasy sports operators to contribute 1% of their proceeds to the Problem Gambling Fund to pay for problem gambling education, prevention, and treatment. Do you think that sports betting operators and fantasy sports operators should contribute to the Problem Gambling Fund? Submit favorable testimony on this bill.

Advocacy like this is one of the most meaningful ways you can

influence Maryland law and policy.

Legislators need your expertise to understand why a bill should or should not become law. Please consider taking any of the steps above to help our lawmakers understand the real-world implications of their actions.
