2020 Shakespeare Festival at Silver Lake High School ShakeSwitched
Thursday, February 13th
6:00p - 8:00p
RJK Auditorium, 260 Pembroke St, Kingston
To celebrate and honor the Bard (a little over 400 years after his death in 1616), seniors Caitlyn Beckwith, Toni Mello, and Avery Saad have created a play that combines elements of Shakespearean tragedies encountered in the English curriculum (Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, and Hamlet) into one creative story. There are 66 students involved in the production this year.
As a Shakespeare Festival tradition, students will be performing the play five times on the day before February vacation–Friday, February 14th. A
free
public performance will take place on Thursday, February 13th at 6 PM in the RJK Auditorium at the high school. The students are really excited about this show and look forward to presenting it to the Silver Lake community
A Brief Synopsis:
You may be familiar with the classic Shakespearean tragedies, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and Hamlet, but things are about to get ShakeSwitched! When the three witches from Macbeth decide to switch characters into different plays, Juliet, Lady Macbeth, and Hamlet find themselves in some pretty wacky situations--but there’s a catch! Only those three characters know they’ve been mixed up! Yep! Romeo pines after Hamlet, Juliet convinces Macbeth to maybe not murder the King of Scotland, Lady Macbeth stabs basically everyone in Denmark, and plenty more crazy antics happen--including loveable characters, such as the triumphant return of Ros and Guil, witches, and even talking plants? ShakeSwitched is sure to be the hot ticket for the SL community and English classes before February break!

Historical Tidbit:
Estes Garage
|
This picture of the garage above shows two doors but it originally had only one which was the one on the left. It had printed on it in large letters FREE AIR which was a very important item in as much as there was no other place for miles around where a person could inflate a tire.
On a deed dated the 7th day of May 1925 between the Atlantic Refining Company, a corporation of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and George W. Estes of Halifax, an agreement was drawn up so that the Atlantic Refining Company could install equipment for the retailing of gasoline and motor oil to the general public.
Mr. Estes owned the property to the west of where the garage sat so he had it moved to the new location and attached a gas station to the business. Halifax Glass now sits on this property.
Before coming to Halifax to start his new business Mr. Estes was associated with the bus service in Brockton. My grandfather, Guy Baker, once stated that George Estes was the best troubleshooter auto repairman he ever saw.
Respectfully Submitted, Sue Basile

Come to the Next Halifax Elementary School
Parent Teacher Organization Meeting
Wed, Feb 12th
6:30p
All Purpose Room (APR) of HES
At the first PTO meeting of 2020: "we only had 2 parents out of 588 students at the school come (excluding board and school committee members). We did a survey last year asking what day and time was preferred and that is why we have all meetings on a Wednesday at 6:30 pm this year. We had more teachers and admin that came back after working all day as well, than families. Every family is part of the PTO if you have a child at HES. This is an excellent opportunity to hear what is going on in the school, get updates from school committee and help spend money that is being raised for our students. Please mark your calendar now and come to the next meeting. We don’t bite!" Re-posted from

Choosing Engagement Over Fear
I am a HUGE Brene Brown fan.
Here are some goodies about leadership... and if you are wondering, we all are leaders: in our families, our volunteerism, social circles and at work. Being a leader is a state of being as much as it is a titled position. These are all from Brené Brown,
Dare to Lead: Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts.
“The courage to be vulnerable is not about winning or losing, it’s about the courage to show up when you can’t predict or control the outcome.”
"Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.”
“People are opting out of vital conversations about diversity and inclusivity because they fear looking wrong, saying something wrong, or being wrong. Choosing our own comfort over hard conversations is the epitome of privilege, and it corrodes trust and moves us away from meaningful and lasting change.”
“If we want people to fully show up, to bring their whole selves including their unarmored, whole hearts—so that we can innovate, solve problems, and serve people—we have to be vigilant about creating a culture in which people feel safe, seen, heard, and respected.”
|
Here is a link to her
Ted Talk on Vulnerability
. It takes courage to be out there with our whole authentic selves, but that's how the most effective communication happens.
Have a great week. ~ Jacquie
