Tisha B’Av, the ninth of Av, is a day of profound communal mourning in Jewish tradition. It commemorates the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem and holds within it the memory of tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people throughout history. Yet Tisha B’Av also calls us to face the brokenness of our own time — to recognize the suffering in our world today and to recommit ourselves to justice, compassion, and repair.

Tisha B’Av Film: Legends of Destruction

Sunday, August 3, 11:00am at TBZ

Winner of four Israeli Academy Awards, Legend of Destruction is a cinematic marvel composed entirely of 1,500 vivid and haunting original paintings, brought to life by the voices of Hollywood stars Oscar Isaac, Evangeline Lilly, Elliott Gould, and Billy Zane. Released in Israel to critical acclaim, the film's reflection of social and political divides in 21st-century Jerusalem feels especially urgent in the wake of the October 7 tragedy. Building upon his prior work on Ushpizin, Gidi Dar’s mesmerizing animated film transports viewers to the days leading up to the Jewish revolt against Rome and the destruction of the Second Temple. Through its exploration of religious zeal, Legend of Destruction resonates powerfully with contemporary issues, underscoring the enduring impact of this pivotal moment in Jewish and world history. Watch the trailer here. Tisha B’Av: A Day of Prayer and Action

Sunday, August 3

We invite you to mark Tisha B’Av through a powerful two-part day of public prayer and moral action. Come for both or join where you can.

3:00pm, Interfaith Prayer Gathering for Liberty

Lawn of United Parish in Brookline (210 Harvard St.)

Join Rav Claudia and other Brookline clergy for a local, interfaith prayer gathering. Rooted in the spirit of justice, dignity, and shared sacred values, this gathering is part of a statewide effort to publicly witness the moral and spiritual harm caused by violations of due process and liberty in our country. These gatherings follow the May 30th Prayers for Liberty march from Lexington to Boston, and are building toward a second march on Labor Day, September 1st. All are welcome — people of all faiths and traditions — to join in brief prayer, song, and shared purpose. Come stand together in hope, in truth, and in the call to justice

4:30–6:00pm, Rebuild Sanctuary: A Tisha B’Av Action on Immigration

DHS ICE Boston Field Office, Burlington, MA

Organized by T’ruah, JALSA, and RAC-MA

As we mourn the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem, times of devastating loss and dislocation for the Jewish people, we call on our leaders to actively resist the federal assault on the dignity, safety and wellbeing of immigrants in our community. We reject the weaponization of Jewish fear into a tool for dismantling civil liberties and instead uphold the tenets of our faith that compel us to protect and stand with marginalized communities. To rebuild sanctuary in the Commonwealth, we ask that our Massachusetts elected officials– including Governor Healey and members of the legislature– do everything in their power to protect immigrants and build a Commonwealth that upholds the dignity and safety of all people.
