Is my Porsche engine susceptible to bore scoring?
Don't forget: IMS bearing service intervals.
Free Webinar: IMS Myths, Facts and Fixes
Bore scoring has become a well-known Achilles’ heel in certain generations of Porsche engines, particularly those utilizing Lokasil and Alusil high-silicon aluminum block technologies. These early lightweight designs offered performance advantages over traditional cast iron liners but came at the cost of long-term durability—especially when paired with suboptimal maintenance or piston design flaws. The result? Thousands of premature engine failures due to deep gouges in the cylinder walls.
Customers are always asking about what Porsche models don’t suffer from scoring. We’ve made a guide that explains all the newest models through 2025 and what cylinder technology Porsche is currently using in them.
If your ball or roller IMS bearing is more than 6 years old or has more than 75,000 miles, whichever comes first, it’s time to replace your IMS bearing. Even if you aren’t anywhere near the 75k miles, remember, the IMS bearing is in service 24/7, has a load on it all the time and is exposed to contaminated engine oil. The worst thing you can do is not drive your Porsche! The only truly permanent fix for the IMS bearing problem is the IMS Solution. Take advantage of our trade-up rebate to save up to $300 on your IMS bearing replacement, and as always, LN Engineering offers free IMS and RMS tool rental.
Get detailed information about your installed IMS Retrofit or IMS Solution bearing upgrade kit, including installation date / mileage and service intervals.
