Honoring All Who Served - Happy Veterans Day!
Honoring All Who Served - Veterans Day - Washington DC - 2025
My chariot arrives early at 5:30 am, chauffeured by National MOPH Adjutant, Keith Grey, on a very cold and windy morning. All I have to do is walk out of the hotel and the van door opens and the heat in the van is a welcome surprise. Minutes later, National MOPH Commander Tracey arrives and off we go to Patton Hall Community Club and Conference Center, at Joint Base Ft. Myer-Henderson Hall. We will arrive around 6:15 am for a breakfast buffet with other VSO attendees and honored guests.
Coffee is served and the mingling starts. I have never seen so many VSO members and there is no way I can talk to them all. Before breakfast some of the organizations that I share my card and chat with are the National President VSO Officer, American Legion National President, National Executive Jewish War Veterans Director, Gold Star Family National President, Gold Star Mothers representatives, Blue Star representatives, American Legion National Commander, and Blind Veterans representatives. Honorable Douglas A. Collins, Secretary of Veterans Affairs, is the speaker and explains what his office is working on to help Veterans. After the program, photos with the Secretary of Veterans Affairs takes place with each person attending.
Guests board buses and depart Patton Hall enroute to Arlington National Cemetery's Amphitheater. I then joined the MOPH and MOPHA attendees at the reserved box in the Amphitheater. We await the arrival of the President of the United States, Vice President of the United States and Secretary of Veterans Affairs. While waiting, the US Army Band and Chorus have a musical prelude. By this time the wind and 22 degrees has everyone shivering and snuggling to each other as much as possible. After the remarks and Veterans Day Address and the President and Vice-President departure it is time to present the MOPH and MOPHA wreath at the Tomb of the Unknow Soldier. The National Commander and I present the wreath.
The next memorial I will attend is the Women's Veterans Memorial and thank goodness that is inside! The National Commander, Sr.-Vice Commander, Jr.- Vice Commander and I will present the wreath. By this time, it is getting dark 5:30 pm. It has been a long day for all attending. It is decided we will all go to dinner and celebrate Veterans Day and enjoy each other's camaraderie and reminisce about our honor to attend the events of this special day.
I was honored to share this windy and cold day with MOPH Auxiliary members, Chris Day, Shirley Rivera and Kristy Grey. Thank you for attending and representing the Military Order of the Purple Heart Auxiliary at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Viet Nam Wall and the Women's Veteran Memorial.

National Senior Vice President
Teviah Gilliard
Hello, dear friends and members of the Auxiliary
--greetings & Happy November!
We've officially entered the third month of the "Ber" season--brrr!--and while some of us (me) are still waking up to 45 degrees and warming up to a cozy 60 by noon, I send warm wishes to everyone in chillier corners of the country. Wherever you are, I hope you're staying safe & snug and surrounded by the best comforts that warm you from the inside out.
Honoring Service, Celebrating Legacy
As autumn reminds us that change is both beautiful and necessary, we enter the season of giving and gratefulness--a time to honor courage, celebrate connection, and welcome renewal.
This November, we salute our veterans, celebrate the U.S. Marine Corps 250th Birthday, and recognize Military Family Month. Each reflects the strength found in service, sacrifice, and support; they're reminders that the fortitude we've been equipped with is a daily act of love, resilience, and community.
To our veterans and their families--thank you for your unwavering courage and sacrifice. You have risen to the challenge time and time again and your legacy inspires us to serve with heart and purpose.
While I could not make it to D.C. this year, my own Veterans Day was local and low-key. I visited the VA hospital and walked through the WWII Museum, surrounded by living history and the quiet power of sacrifice. With the presence of WWI veterans and veterans from many eras-including those who served in wartime and those who served in peace- and families whose military legacy runs deep, the experience was as reverent and profound as it always will be. Stories etched into every artifact, and the museum itself felt alive with remembrance; I was humbled and grateful all at once- one more time.
Giving Thanks, Giving Back
As we gather for Thanksgiving, let's carry that spirit of gratitude into our mission. This season reminds us to give thanks as well as give back. Once powerful way we do that is by growing our Auxiliary:
· We reconnect with established members, honoring their wisdom & continued presence.
· We invite new members, welcoming fresh energy, and new perspectives.
· And... we activate our "legacy keepers," empowering those who carry our history to shape our future, particularly through Tasking Each Active Member and volunteerism.
Let us rise to the challenge--season after season--and make this one full of connection, kindness, and continued service.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you--
May your turkey be juicy and your gravy never be lumpy,
May your candied yams make your sweet potato dreams come true,
May your pie crusts be golden and your Cool Whip generous,
And may every bite--whether pumpkin, pecan, or apple--serve up a sweetness that lingers long beyond the season of the Pumpkin Spice Latte.
For Thanksgiving I am thankful for the special food-- but for Thanksgiving and every day, I'm thankful for all of you.

I have been very busy since the last news letter. In October I dropped off around 100 duffel bags from my high school where I work. They were dropped off at the VA Homeless center in downtown Minneapolis. They were very happy to receive them. On October 25th I had the honor of speaking to the CA midterm conference on zoom. I told them about our fundraiser. I reminded them to check the VA benefits book to make sure they are getting what they need. Later that night I was invited to the VFW 1, yes the very first one. I went with Diane Lind who is Dept of MN and Unit 268 secretary-treasurer. We did networking and enjoyed a great meal. On November 1st visited Sutton Farms. The MOPH and MOPHA were there in September for a Salute the Troops a event that they hold. We spoke to them in regards to next year. I'm including a photo with Mr.and Mrs. Hegseth. We told them what the MOPH was and how you received it. November 7th Diane and myself were greeters at Storm Creek warehouse. We help out and the pay goes to the unit. I am shown with the owners of Storm Creek presenting them with a plaque for donating over $33,000 in new clothing to the VA Hospitals, Va Homes and homeless in MN. I was at a second store and found out that they donate the clothes and shoes after 90 days. I called the homeless center and another veterans outlet and they said that they would gladly take them. It doesn't hurt to asked. They will box them up for me and let me know when to pick up.
November is all about veterans. However I feel that every month should be about helping our veterans. Winter is here and they need so many things to stay warm. Use the grants that we have for us to buy things for them. Black Friday is a great time to stock up at the big box stores. So ask for donations. Think about doing back packs for the homeless.
During Thanksgiving I hope all enjoy their families. Go around the table and tell everyone what they are thankful for. I'm thankful for my family, health and all of you. I'm also thankful for the veterans who fought for our freedom. I tell my students the veterans gave us the opportunities to: go to any church, buy bread any day of the week, go to any school that we want, books, desks in our schools and the freedom of speech. Land of the free and home of the brave. Thank you veterans and those who are serving.

National Secretary
Judy Fiddler
Hi All…I’m not sure if I’m ready for what I woke up to today. There was snow on the trees and a light dusting on the ground. It got me thinking about something I read recently…It was advice from a Penguin (Trademark of YOUR TRUE NATURE, INC and ILAN SHAMIR):
Dive into life. Find warmth among friends. Appreciate snow days. Take long walks. Stand together. Go the extra mile. Keep your cool.
So, I am going to follow that penguin’s advice to get me through this upcoming winter and maybe beyond. It had been a rough October and thankful to see it go. The bright spot of the month was the joy on my mother’s face to see so many birthday wishes come in the mail and at the 90th surprise birthday party her family threw in her honor. Thank you for sending cards and messages.
Rebates are being calculated and checks issued to go out sometime in December. We are still looking for that one special person to step up and be the next National Secretary. Contact Fran, Teviah or Judy if you are interested. I’m so thankful that I took this position on almost 14 years ago, learning so much about this organization. I can’t express what this organization has meant to me.
Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

"GOD BLESS AMERICA"
This simple one-verse song became an overnight hit, and a hopeful song as war threatened. But Irving Berlin also received sharp criticism from the press and the public. In an October 10,1940 interview he said, in answer to those who questioned the sincerity of his lyric and his reference to God, Berlin had this to say: (I quote from article) "God Bless America' is a patriotic song written so it can be sung and understood by everyone. It is not a hymn or an anthem. It is just a song. What's wrong with a patriotic song?". Berlin's response was simple and eloquent: "All that I hope for 'God Bless America," " he told the new York Herald-Tribune (October 10, 1940), "is that it will continue to be popular, especially in these day when so many people feel a need for some vocal expression of their patriotism."
In 1918 "Sergeant" Irvin Berlin was stationed at Camp Upton in Yaphank, on Long Island, New York. He was already a successful songwriter, but now a draftee, and his commanding officer enlisted him to write a musical revue to help raise money for a new building. A light-hearted musical review about army life. The hit was "Oh! How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning." (anyone watch Bing Crosby "Holiday Inn"!) The other song was cut and put in a trunk.
Kate Smith who we associate with the song had asked Irving Berlin for a new number for her radio show in 1938. She was looking for something to mark the 20th anniversary of the end of the Great War, what would later be called World War I. But Irving Berlin was experiencing composer's block, but felt he must deliver. He had just returned from a trip to Europe. Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, was growing more powerful and aggressive and seemed to be preparing for war. He wasn't focusing on a get American ready for a war, but wanted to create a celebrate America as a special place to live. He remembered a song he had drafted years earlier. He pulled the 20-year old manuscript out of an old trunk.
Kate Smith called and he rapidly began rewriting and revising. He had less than two weeks till her November 10, 1938 radio program.
1918 Version Read:
God Bless America, land that I love
Stand beside her
And guide her
To the right with the light from above
Make her victorious on land and foam
God Bless America, my home sweet home. (do you see the changes?)
Berlin knew he had to change the 4th line as Right in political groups had come to mean conservative
political groups. He wanted a song to bring Americans together, and not set them apart.
And he changed "Make her victorious" since it suggested military conquest, rather than the "Peace song" he was shooting for.
The result was the song that became Kate Smiths trademark, Berlin also used as one of his featured songs while touring with his show during WWII.
Most American school kids learn, we sing at most meetings, sporting events etc.
Some people even think it is the unofficial national anthem of the US. It was spontaneously sung by crowds after the 9/11 attack,
further solidifying its role as a symbol of national unity.
Kate Smith also added a short poem-prelude that Berlin had also written:
"While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in solemn prayer."
God Bless American,
Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.

We traditionally have a "Hidden Object" in the General Orders. However, this month, I will ask that you send me one thing you a grateful for this Thanksgiving. We will compile all of the answers and share a few on Thursday's meeting. Please let me know before Thursday. From the entries, we will draw a name and a lucky winner will win a prize.
Please continue to read the General Orders and hunt.
Share the information with other members. Use the information you read to include in letters/emails to members. Get some great ideas for your units and departments. Let's keep everyone informed. A lot of time and information goes into these General Orders and it is for ALL our members. If this organization is going to continue it is up to all of us, doing our part. Enjoy and have Fun.

Season-changed! Time-changed & clocks set back one hour! Society-changing! People-changing! The World-changing! GOD--not changing! He is the same today, yesterday and will be tomorrow! HE is our constant, keeps HIS promises, and not ever fails, nor ever leaves us alone.
As we observed and celebrated Veterans on Veterans Day 2025 (aka Armistice Day), I continue to stand firm in the belief that Veterans Day is every day-, not only because of my Patriot, but because of all Veterans who have served in the United States armed services. Their commitment, selfless dedication, perseverance, and sacrifices secured the many freedoms that we here in the United States of America enjoy. Let us not forget the many family members who provided support during their times of service including the Gold Star families.
“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” -John F. Kennedy
With that, I give Praise to God for our veterans. Happy Veterans Day! And Thank a Veteran for Their Service-every day at every opportunity! May God bless our Veterans and their families and may God continue to bless America!

The Chaplain’s Chat on Thursday, 30 October 2025, was well-worth the meet. A hearty thank you to the members who were present, connected, and contributed to the goal of the meeting. The agenda included: welcome, opening inspirational moment and prayer, introduction of attendees, brief review of the purpose of this Chat with the primary goal to connect and support each other as Chaplains and with our membership through the Units and Department Chaplains, as well as the Region. In the spirit of sharing ideas/suggestions with heart-to-heart conversation, President Fran agreed to the suggestion of having a Chaplain’s Chat at next year’s National Convention in New Bern, NC. As discussion ensued, it proved to be inspirational and informative to be able to identify some areas to further research. We closed with prayer requests, an inspirational moment, and prayer. The next Chaplain’s Chat is to be determined.
By the time you read this, a few of November’s notable significant days have already passed, although every day of living is significant. For a full calendar of monthly, weekly, and daily observances, I encourage you to explore Google’s November Calendar. It’s chock-full of health, fun, informational awareness which would take up a lot of space here. Enjoy-have fun!
PRAYER TIME:
Please join in prayer, according to your faith, even that as small as a mustard seed. I invite you to include the aforementioned prayer requests and to reflect on this old Irish Blessing that was shared with me, in addition to your personal prayer. Let it be your personal prayer for Thanksgiving. This is Your Time-it will be ‘Your Prayer.’
“They were all continually united in prayer.” (Acts 1:14)
Just Breathe: Take 3 deep breaths… | 1 at a time. | Inhale… | Hold. | Slowly exhale… | Relax. | PRAY.
Count your blessings instead of crosses
Count your gain instead of losses
Count your joys instead of woes
Count your friends instead of foes
Count your courage instead of fears
Count your laughs instead of tears
Count your full years instead of lean
Count your kind deeds instead of mean
Count your health instead of wealth
Count on GOD instead of self!
Think about it- what else are you thankful for? Include everything you can think of, count them one by one. Write them down, say them out loud, share them with family and friends this Thanksgiving. Be amazed at just how blessed you are and with a shout of praise, thank and bless our loving Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent, Father God!
Have an abundantly blessed Thanksgiving by His grace and mercy -everyday! AMEN!!!

"If you are really thankful, what do you do? You share." — W. Clement Stone. This quote is exactly how we are taking care of our veterans, military, family and neighbors right now in Region 2. With the Government shutdown and SNAP/EBT paused, I have heard of wonderful members in our organization reaching out to run food drives, donate to food banks, pay utility bills and much more to help fill the gap. Keep up the great work!

Summer is long gone. Schools are open. Fall sports are in full swing. The holiday season is almost here. Are you ready?? What do you have planned for your Patriots, your unit, other veterans, and for service to others? So much can be done this time of the year – and time is of the essence. Hopefully your plans are made and in motion – and don’t forget your families. It is a time of celebration and of sorrow; togetherness and loneliness; a time to reach out and share yourself with others to influence truth and love to help make a positive difference in those you encounter. And don’t forget to ask for help – we are all here to support you and say a prayer or lend a helping hand, as we are able and you ask.
Cards, notes, and pictures are always appropriate. After Thanksgiving and before Christmas (and all the other holidays you may celebrate) is another act of kindness and remembrance – new, if you will, by comparison to many others. Wreaths Across America is a non-profit organization begun in 2007 to “Remember, Honor, and Teach.” Funded by donations and made by volunteers, wreaths are laid on the graves of veterans to “Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom.” Department of Oregon, MOPH and MOPHA decided to take another step and place another wreath at the National Cemeteries in Oregon State to Remember, Honor, and Teach about those who left part of their blood when they were wounded on the battlefield of war (and earned the Military Order of the Purple Heart) while fighting for Freedom. When MOPH Chapter 72 (Portland, OR) learned that special a banner and ribbon were to be put on each wreath, they asked for several banners and ribbons so they could be placed on the graves of their Purple Heart Patriots who passed on this past year. Wreaths will be made locally by members to be added to the Wreaths Across America Ceremonies on Saturday, December13, 2025. Consider checking with your own local cemeteries and Wreaths Across America to see how you might assist and/or participate.
Unit 72 Auxiliary members liked the MOPH wreaths so much that they plan to order more banners and wreaths to Remember, Honor, and Teach in their own homes to family and friends during the holiday season, for future Memorial Day events, future Celebrations of Life, Purple Heart Day on Aug. 7th, Flag Banner, and whatever else they may come up with to Remember, Honor, and Teach, just as is the mission of Wreaths Across America. Thank you, Wreaths Across America, for all you have continued to do since 2007.
If you have ideas you can share that others may like to adopt, please share them with all of us.
