NATIONAL HARD CANDY DAY
A favorite of young and old alike, National Hard Candy Day on December 19th, recognizes the sweet tooth in all of us.
Most hard candies are 100% sugar with flavoring and colors added. To achieve a hard candy, confectioners boil a sugar syrup to 320 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature is reached, the hot, pliable sugar is poured into molds or rolled and folded into shapes and left to cool. Once cool, solid sugar becomes hardened and brittle.
The first hard candies, such as lemon drops and peppermints, were likely prescribed as a remedy for stomach ailments.
Hard candy became popular in the seventeenth century as sugar prices fell. Previously, hard candy was something that only the well-to-do could afford. By the mid-1800s, over 400 companies were manufacturing this popular treat.
In 2015, Jolly Rancher surpassed Werther's Original as the best-selling hard candy. Other popular hard candies include Dum Dum Pops, Life Savers, Tootsie Roll Pops, and Charms Blow Pop.

"Joy" embodies the essence of "glee" in today's vernacular, capturing a profound sense of happiness and delight. While "glee" evokes a lighthearted, often playful exuberance, "joy" encompasses a deeper, more enduring emotion. It reflects an inner contentment and fulfillment that transcends transient moments of bliss. In a fast-paced world, where fleeting pleasures are commonplace, joy serves as a reminder of the beauty found in meaningful connections, personal achievements, and simple pleasures. Its resonance in modern conversations highlights the importance of embracing positivity and gratitude, making "joy" a fitting and powerful equivalent to the spirited charm of "glee."

The 12 Y’ats of Christmas—Explained!
By: Emily Hingle
On the First Y'at of Xmas
Benny Grunch's holiday hit "The 12 Yats of Christmas" is a song that only locals can understand due to its references to beloved New Orleans businesses and colloquialisms. The tune emerged in the 1990s, and some of the references "ain't dere no more," as Benny Grunch puts it. For those who weren't here to experience these things, this is what "The Yats" were talking about.
12. On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, a dozen Manuel's tamales
Mexican-born Manuel Hernandez started a hot tamale business in 1932 with a cart posted at Carrollton Boulevard and Canal Street. The operation grew into a window service eatery at 4709 S. Carrollton Ave. that was eventually run by Manuel's daughter Frances. The building was inundated with flood water from Hurricane Katrina and sold to new owners. While all parties involved hoped to revive the family business, it proved too difficult.
11. On the eleventh day at Veterans Highway, tryin' ta cross the street with eleven Schwegmann bags
Schwegmann Brothers Giant Supermarkets' first location at the intersection of St. Claude Avenue and Elysian Fields Avenue opened in 1946 by John G. Schwegmann. The second store opened in 1950 at 2701 Airline Hwy. was the largest supermarket in the nation. Schwegmann's grew to 18 stores over the next 50 years and heralded many innovations in the grocery business, including anti-price fixing campaigns, everyday low prices, and in-store utility bill payment services. Customers could get a drink at the bar during their shopping trip.
[Wikimedia Commons / Postcard Specialties]
Due to an influx of non-local competition, Schwegmann's was sold to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Company in 1997, who declared bankruptcy on the brand and ceased operation in 1999.
10. I used'ta be at Kaiser now I'm woikin' down da street at da Tenneco Chalmette Refinery
The Kaiser Aluminum Corporation plant was built in 1951 and was the largest aluminum smelter in the world for some time. It shuttered in 1983.
The Tenneco Chalmette Refinery started operations in 1915 as a kerosene manufacturing plant then transitioned to oil refining as automobiles and electricity grew. Tenneco was only one of the numerous operators of the plant as Bay Petroleum, Tennessee Gas, and ExxonMobil also operated it at times. It has been owned by PBF Energy since 2015.
9. On the ninth day of Christmas, we drove down Delery in da Lower Nint' Ward
8. On da eighth day of Christmas, me and Rosalie ate by ya mama's
7. Cemetery traffic got backed up to Metairie at the Seventeenth Street Canal
The 17th Street Canal was created to drain swampy areas between Lake Pontchartrain and the city of Carrollton (later annexed by New Orleans). The levee atop the canal wall broke during Hurricane Katrina, flooding Lakeview homes. An erosion mitigation project started in mid-2024 to re-strengthen the wall of the canal.
6. On da sixth day 'a Christmas, we stopped at K&B's for a six pack 'a Dixie
Gustave Katz and Sydney J. Besthoff partnered to create a drug store called K&B at 732 Canal St. in 1905. The successful store grew into a chain that saw the iconic purple logo spread across the Gulf Coast. K&B offered its own brand of items, including liquor and beer. K&B was sold to Rite Aid in 1997, which ended up shuttering the brand.
[Wikimedia Commons / Times Picayune newspaper]
Dixie Beer started brewing at 2401 Tulane Ave. in 1907 under the helm of Valentine Merz. Dixie Brewing briefly sold to Coy International before selling to Joseph and Kendra Bruno in 1985, and it went bankrupt in 1989. It was revived in the 1990s with new specialty beers including Blackened Voodoo. Hurricane Katrina ruined the brewery, and production was moved to Wisconsin. Tom Benson purchased the majority of Dixie Brewing in 2017, and his widow Gayle Benson worked to open a brand new brewing facility in New Orleans East in 2020. The name Dixie would be changed to Faubourg Brewing Company some months later.
While the new sprawling brewery was popular with beer lovers, it was shuttered in 2024 after a merger with Made By The Water.
5. On the fifth day of Christmas, we stopped at A&G for frrried onion rrrings
Bob Atkinson and Clifton Ganus opened the first A&G Restaurant in 1932 at 2627 Canal St. There were 10 A&G Restaurants around New Orleans in five years time, serving Creole barbecued pork, ham sandwiches, and hot dogs. Their first cafeteria-style restaurant opened in 1950, which was followed by several more in the city, Metairie, Houma, and Lafayette.
4. On the fourth day I said, "OK, let's get a Christmas tree before ya drive me nuts"
3. On da thoid day' a Christmas, we stopped at McKenzie's for three French breads
Henry McKenzie's Prytania Street bakery was struggling in 1936 due to the ravages of the Great Depression, so he sold it to Donald Entringer Sr. for just $83. Entringer was able to save the bakery and grow the brand with his popular pastries such as turtles, jelly rolls, and buttermilk drops. There were dozens of McKenzie's Pastry Shoppes around the New Orleans metro, yet all of them shuttered in 2000 due to bankruptcy. Some of the stores reopened months later but did not last long. Tastee Donuts purchased the iconic logo and pastry recipes in 2001, so New Orleanians can still enjoy the famous pastries, including McKenzie's king cake.
2. In da Christmas Picayune, I seen it dere in Section E, a Tujague's recipe
Tujague's Restaurant opened in 1856 at 811 Decatur St. by Guillaume and Marie Abadie Tujague. The restaurant took over the former Begue's Exchange at 823 Decatur St. in 1914, and it flourished there for over 100 years. Tujague's second-generation owner Mark Latter chose to move into a new space at 429 Decatur St. in 2020 due to the lease expiring. Tujague's is the second oldest restaurant in New Orleans.
1. On da foist day'a Christmas, ma Mawmaw gave to me, a crawfish' dey caught in Arabi

New Orleans Bowl matchup is set. See which teams will play in Dec. 19 game.
Georgia Southern and Sam Houston State will meet in the 24th New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 19 in the Caesars Superdome.
Kickoff for the first meeting between the two schools is 6 p.m. The game will air on ESPN2.
“This matchup is an incredible opportunity to showcase the hospitality of New Orleans,” bowl executive director Billy Ferrante said.
Georgia Southern (8-4, 6-2 Sun Belt) finished second to Marshall in the league’s Eastern Division despite a 24-23 victory against the Thundering Herd. Late-season losses to Old Dominion and Troy denied the Eagles the championship game berth.
Sam Houston (9-3, 6-2 Conference USA) would have played Jacksonville State for the league title if Western Kentucky did not defeat the Gamecocks, 19-17, on a last-second field goal last week.
Still it’s been a significant year for the Bearcats, who are playing in their first bowl game in the program’s second season at the FBS level.
However, Sam Houston will be without longtime coach K.C. Keeler was named the coach at Temple earlier this week after 11 seasons at the Huntsville, Texas, school.
Offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen and assistant head coach John Johnson are in charge of the team for the bowl game according to athletic director Bobby Williams, who added that both are under consideration to succeed Keeler.
“Coaching changes are never easy,” Williams said. “But they also give you a chance to evaluate your program and we have a very strong candidate pool thanks to the job K.C. did.
“At the same time, it’s very important to us to make this the best bowl experience possible for the players who have put in so much strong work to get us into this position.”
Georgia Southern is in its seventh bowl in 10 years at the FBS level and the third straight under former Southern Cal coach Clay Helton. The Eagles improved from 6-7 the last two years.
It’s the second New Orleans Bowl appearance for Georgia Southern. The first came in the COVID-affected 2020 season, which saw 11 bowls cancelled when the Eagles played Louisiana Tech in a virtually empty Superdome due to game restrictions that also limited the teams not coming to New Orleans until the day before the game and leaving immediately thereafter.
“Billy and his staff did their best under the circumstances,” said Georgia Southern athletic director Jared Benko, who was then deputy athletic director. “The best thing was the outcome (Georgia Southern won, 35-3).
“Now we’re getting to return to Eagle Nation behind us. Our fans love going to bowl games and are especially looking forward to coming to a great city like New Orleans.”
Likewise, Williams said, Sam Houston fans will be enthused about coming to New Orleans.

The Skivvies return to Le Petit Theatre for their third year to perform classic Christmas tunes, comedic mashups, and nostalgic medleys. Their wildly absurd musical theatre moments are sure to bring joy and laughter during the holiday season. Surprise special guests join in the fun each night.
The Skivvies are Lauren Molina and Nick Cearley, singer/actor/musicians performing stripped down arrangements of eclectic covers and eccentric originals. LSU Women's Basketball
CHICAGO – Aneesah Morrow is back home in Chicago as No. 5 LSU (13-0) is set for its first road game of the season at Illinois-Chicago (2-5) on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT in Credit Union 1 Arena.
Morrow is coming off a huge performance in which she was named the MVP of the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase against Seton Hall with a season-high 24 points, 19 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists and a block. It was her nation-leading 11th double-double. She also leads the nation with 14.1 rebounds per game and has grabbed 15+ boards in four straight games.
The Chicago native who played her first two season at DePaul, continues to climb all-time rankings. Her 85 career double-doubles rank No. 6 in NCAA DI history. She is eight double-doubles shy of holding the No. 2 spot; Courtney Paris (Oklahoma) owns the record with 128. Morrow has also climbed into the top-25 in career rebounds in NCAA DI, currently with 1,412 career rebounds. She is putting together one of the best careers in college women’s basketball history.
“I want to be one percent better than I was the day before,” Morrow said. “I work towards that just to accomplish my goals. I want to set a standard not only for myself, but my teammates.”
Morrow starred in high school at Simeon, a school known for producing top men’s players such as Derrick Rose and Jabari Parker. She is the most notable women’s basketball player out of Simeon. She led Simeon to its first girls’ basketball state championship with a 25-2 record while averaging 28.4 points, 14.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists. Coming out of high school and being recruited amidst Covid, Morrow decided to stay in Chicago and play at DePaul. She was named National Freshman of the Year and stayed there through her sophomore season before transferring to LSU.
She has nearly 40 friends and family that will be in Credit 1 Union Arena Thursday night. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and fans can listen to Patrick Wright and Shaeeta Williams on the LSU Sports Radio Network.

NATIONAL OATMEAL MUFFIN DAY
Enjoy a delicious breakfast or snack on National Oatmeal Muffin Day. It's an excellent way to celebrate on December 19th annually.
Known for its health benefits, millions of people start each day with an oatmeal muffin. Oatmeal includes health benefits for our hearts. Finding ways to incorporate it into our diets increases the opportunities to reap those benefits. Oatmeal muffins are another way to enjoy oatmeal.
The American muffin is similar in size and shape to a cupcake. Recipes for oatmeal muffins began to appear in American cookbooks in the mid-1800s. Raisins, bananas, blueberries and other healthy fruits often compliment oatmeal muffins. Add nuts for even more health benefits and texture, too.

Police Community Advisory Boards are volunteer, independent, police district-based, citizen led advisory groups that communicate and engage with their police district community at large to provide at least four quarterly PCAB/community meetings. FNWS
We know how crazy things are this time of year - so much hustle and bustle, buying gifts, attending parties, shopping for special dinners... we wanted to offer you a moment to unwind on the patio with us and hopefully discover new wines that we think are perfect for both giving and sharing. Whether you're gifting a bottle to a wine snob or family member, holding a dinner party or simply toasting with friends, we promise our handpicked selection will elevate the moment. To make things a bit more celebratory, we'll also supply you with a story on each wine (paper copy and email) that can be added to your gift or talked about at the table. And in true Swirl style, these won't be wines you'll find in other places or boring varieties but unique selections, just great expressions from some of our favorite places, and presented by Alex Minton of Uncorked. We hope you'll join us for this special evening. Somehow we have 3 tickets left...get them quick, Holiday Cheer

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,December 23
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

To maximize accessibility, trainings will be scheduled in neighborhoods across the city.
Narcan training sessions will include free Narcan for all participants, while Stop the Bleed training will cover essential skills for managing bleeding emergencies. As an extra incentive to participate, The Broadside will offer free movie tickets to a screening at the Broad Theater for the first 15 attendees at each of their hosted sessions.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians
The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.
Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.
Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.
And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
