The theme for this year is Navigating the Future. Planning started for 2023 almost a year ago, and we weren’t sure exactly what this year would bring.
Our committees have put together 21 events so far this year, and I know the second half will only continue to bring more great events. The committees have stayed determined in their efforts to hit goals and below is a highlight of what has been done to stay on course.

Make Your Goals SMARTR

Do you remember your New Year’s Resolutions? What were your thoughts as the prior year ended and the new year was about to begin? Did something disrupt your plans?
As we reach the half-way point of 2023, it is time to reflect on our thoughts regarding what this year was anticipated to bring and evaluate how we are doing.
New Year’s resolutions are a common practice among many people. Often, they are just a fleeting idea or wish.
If they are to be taken seriously, a resolution is really a goal. Without goals, it is difficult to measure progress. Yet, to be effective, the goals should be ‘SMART’. This is a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timed. Continue...

March 29: 13-Week Cash Flow webinar draws crowd
By Mark S. Melickian, Raines Feldman LLP
| The Chapter’s Education Committee presented the always-popular 13-Week Cash Flow webinar . This was not an introductory webinar on preparing a spreadsheet cash flow model for a distressed company, but focused on the softer elements of finding and synthesizing the information necessary for accurate modeling: Where is the information located? Who at the company owns it, who reports to them, and who do they report to? What questions do you need to ask to get accurate and complete answers? What are the impediments you might face in your due diligence? The webinar was moderated by David Interdonato (Managing Director, Riveron), with panelists Craig Pace (Managing Director, Virtas Partners), Erik White (Managing Director, Harney Partners), and Jack Donohue, (Director, Development Specialists, Inc.). The event drew 234 attendees. | | |

April 4: NextGen has a blast at the Bulls v. Hawks
By Luke Stephenson, MorrisAnderson
| Members of the TMA Next Gen Committee Samantha Ruben, Joe Ford, and Luke Stephenson put together a NextGen Networking event at the Chicago Bulls game against the Atlanta Hawks. The event was well received with 35 attendees enjoying a night in a United Center suite full of drinks, food and lively conversation. Several new faces were there which builds on an already growing population of TMA NextGen members. For two years in a row the TMA NextGen Bulls Game has been a great success and due to its popularity will likely be an annual event for some time. | | |

April 13: Chicago wins! University Case Competition
By Alex Porter, Lathrop GPM
| The University Relations Committee held its second-annual “Cross-Chapter Case Competition” where graduate students from TMA’s Chicago, Houston, and Dallas/Ft. Worth chapters competed virtually for a $4,500 cash prize. The students were tasked with presenting to a panel of five turnaround professionals about their findings and conclusions of Ford’s 2008 turnaround. The judges were impressed by each chapter’s presentation and preparedness, but ultimately the Chicago chapter’s team took home the $4,500 prize! Going forward, the Committee will be working with TMA Global to implement an annual competition involving more chapters and an in-person competition at one of TMA’s annual conferences. | | |

April 26: Cross-chapter virtual power hour event
By Tim Mulholland, TJM Limited
| The TMA Chicago/Milwaukee Membership Committees hosted a Virtual Network Power Hour (NPH) with fellow Midwest chapters including TMA Indiana, Western Michigan, and Detroit. The breakout room discussions began with the topic of “credit tightening from the SVB, Signature Bank, and Republic Bank fallouts”; the impact being seen now, and what may be in store for the future of the turnaround industry. The NPH proved to be a good opportunity for TMA colleagues in the Midwest to broaden connections and learn about each other’s business and potential opportunities. A special thanks to the chapter leaders John Trendell from Detroit, Colleen Daniels from Indiana and Marty Janaowiak from Western Michigan. | | |

May 9: Sunny May Breakfast in Milwaukee
By Virginia George, Steinhilber Swanson
| |
Members gathered at Central Grand Café & Tappery in Milwaukee for a lively networking breakfast. Over 45 members from two states met and exchanged greetings and discussed the cumulative state of Turnaround Management in our region.
The morning was sunny and warm so we took advantage of the lovely outdoor patio and sipped piping hot lattes. Milwaukee Program Committee Co-chairs Virginia George and Erin West made brief remarks of welcome and encouraged involvement in upcoming TMA events. Sponsors were invited to say hello to the group and everyone sat down for a tasty breakfast followed by a networking game. Truthfully, more members ate the props for the networking game (M&Ms) than played the game, but two lucky participants won Amazon gift cards! Thanks again to the MKE sponsors, the MKE planning committee members and Katlyn Glatz for helping us put on these events.

May 23: Who needs bankruptcy? Turn it around, shut it down or sell it in receivership
By Mark S. Melickian, Raines Feldman LLP
| Kathy Bazoian Phelps (Partner, Raines Feldman LLP) moderated a spirited virtual discussion of the pros and cons (mostly pros) of receiverships. The panel discussed and debated the differences between federal equity and state receiverships (including Wisconsin’s unique Section 128 model), using receiverships to sell assets, operating a business in receivership, handling claims and distributions, and using receiverships as the vehicle to pursue litigation – in particular, fraud litigation. Joining the Moderator for the hour were Rebecca DeMarb (Senior Managing Director, Development Specialists, Inc.), Jill Nicholson, Partner, Foley & Lardner LLP), and Joseph Konizeski (Senior Trial Lead, Commodity Futures Trading Commission). The event drew 70 attendees | | |

May 24: Taking TMA out to the ballpark
By Virginia George, Steinhilber Swanson
| Over 50 members and guests enjoyed the Milwaukee Brewers v. the Houston Astros at American Family Field, complete with fireworks for the three Brewer homeruns. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Brewer’s game without the racing sausages, the 7th inning stretch and loud cheering from the TMA section located on the private deck just above the bull pen! The Brewers were victorious 4-0 over the Astros. Several attendees caught baseballs from the pitchers in the bullpen, and all agreed to meet again next year at this fun event. A special thanks to all the fantastic and enthusiastic sponsors and members, who attended in full Brewers regalia and one member sporting an Astros baseball cap. We look forward to expanding this event next year to an even larger deck! | | |

Market Insights, Musings and Trends

"Suburban landlords may no longer be 'sidelined' by retailers who have filed bankruptcy and left their premises empty. While Bed, Bath and Beyond may have stopped selling kitchen gadgets, their landlords are hoping that they can stay in the 'kitchen' business by negotiating new leases with tenants who are looking for large entertainment spaces where patrons can eat, drink and compete in the country’s fastest-growing sport, pickleball."
Michelle Novick, Saul Ewing
"Volunteering is not just a selfless act of giving back to the community, it is also a great way to network, gain new skills, and boost your resume. Volunteering may create an opportunity to connect with someone that you may not normally meet. So, if you are not volunteering already, you may be missing out on valuable opportunities both personally and professionally."

School and Major: University of Texas at Austin. My major program is called Texas CSB. It is a combination dual-degree program where I will earn a BBA in Canfield Business Honors and a BS in Computer Science Honors.
What is your favorite thing about the campus? My favorite thing about campus is how compact it is. It is super easy to walk around everywhere because of how close things on campus, and even off campus, are. Walking around UT’s “40 Acres” is such a fun experience because you constantly run into friends along the way.
What are you most proud of during your college career? I am most proud not of one particular achievement in college, but rather that I have been able to spread myself across so many different small achievements throughout my time. I feel that I have been successful in my academic pursuits, my leadership roles, my professional experiences, and my social commitments, all at one time. I am very proud to have been able to achieve such a good balance in my life, one that I did not have as much when I was in high school.
Did you complete an internship? I completed 2 internships in my time in college, for the past two summers. In the summer of 2021, I worked at Lightico, a tech startup in Tel Aviv, and in the summer of 2022, I worked at Broadridge, a major public financial technology firm in New York.
What are your plans after graduation? My plans after graduation are to explore more of what I am interested in and connect all the theory I have learned in college to the real world. My initial plan is to move back to Chicago, where I will be working in Technology Consulting. I hope to continue my learning process in the professional world, and never stop improving.

School and Major: Cornell University. I am an environmental engineering major in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering with minors in marine biology and business.
What is your favorite thing about the campus? One of my favorite things about campus is the walk back from campus to my house because I get to look over Cayuga Lake; it’s especially beautiful in the fall when the leaves are changing color. I’m also on the sailing team so I can get a glimpse at the sailing conditions before I get to practice.
What are you most proud of during your college career? The thing I’m most proud of during my college career so far is being captain of the sailing team; I’m usually not the one starting in regattas, but whenever I look at the score sheet and see Cornell doing well it always makes my day.
What are your future plans? I am currently on track to start an M.Eng during my senior year spring semester and be done with it one semester after graduating. After I get my masters, I plan on either going into environmental engineering or environmental consulting.
