| | From the Youth Minister: Saint John's Youth in the Wilderness | |
Going into the wilderness is a central theme of Scripture and a transformational part of a youth’s summer. Whether it’s to pray, be in community, be with God, or simply to escape the summer heat, our seasonal retreat into the mountains offers our young people an important opportunity to reset. Christians have done this for a long time, and we are so lucky that here in Colorado we have places where we can nurture this ancient rhythm. With camps like Cathedral Ridge and Duncan Park at our fingertips, youth can grow into the people God is calling them to be.
Two weeks ago, I had the privilege to serve as the teacher at middle school camp. For many of our youth, Cathedral Ridge, our diocesan camp and retreat center, feels like their second home. This session, I was struck by the range of personalities and the way our group of 20 campers blended together joyfully, sometimes chaotically, but always lovingly. During our week, we explored each line of the Lord’s Prayer, pondered each phrase with keen attention and striking vulnerability (thank you, Jesus). In summers to come, I can’t wait to see more of our Saint John’s youth in leadership roles at camp and take part in making this camp even more magical.
This past week, in conjunction with Young Episcopalians in Service (YES) and Duncan Park Camp of the Diocese of West Texas, I went backpacking with twelve youth in the Indian Peaks Wilderness for four days and three nights. During our trip we were reminded that it does not take a lot to have everything we need; a lesson I hope we can all take home with us. Our scripture passage, Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, grounded us in the truth that there is a time for everything, whether it’s learning to survive in the woods, frolicking in open fields, being silent around a campfire, or yapping along the trail– all of it is holy.
Many of our youth could not experience their summer in the wilderness without your generous offerings to the Children’s Collection. With your donations, we are fortunate at Saint John’s to assure all of our families that they can participate in these ministries without financial burden. So many of us remember how formative summer camp experiences were in our own lives. What a gift it is to pass these lifelong memories and moments of faith to our youngest parishioners. Summer programming is certainly one of my favorite parts of my role. I cannot wait to see how it nurtures our youth community this year and in the years to come.

If you missed it, Bishop Rob O’Neill preached a wonderful and timely sermon this past Sunday on the perils of today’s “attention economy” and the importance of being prayerfully present and discerning of those things that demand our attention every day. Listen to Bishop Rob’s sermon here.
You can always find the previous week's sermon on our website. Or view the full service on our YouTube, Vimeo, & Facebook pages.
