OPS/NOW Meeting and Community Meal

Come celebrate Thanksgiving early on Wednesday, November 12! Everyone is invited to gather in the Henry Young Fellowship Hall for a Thanksgiving-themed dinner at 6:00 p.m. and stay for continued discussion of our church community and mission.

Our discussions will take place in two committees:

· OPS (Operations) Committee—Guides the work of stewardship and giving, finances, budget, personnel, upkeep of building and grounds.

· NOW Committee—Guides programmatic work of the congregation, including music and worship, Christian formation, earth care, gun violence prevention, garden ministry, outreach to the community, Guatemala partnership and overseas mission.

Even if you are not sure about serving on a “committee,” please join us for the meal and a chance to get to know others in our church community.

CHOIR PRACTICE

Choir practice is held every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Please feel free to come and see if this is something you might be interested in.

Book Study

Please join us Wednesday mornings, from 10:00 to 11:15, on Zoom, for study and discussion of the book "Christ in the Rubble: Faith, the Bible, and the Genocide in Gaza," by Munther Isaac.

The first meeting was October 29, but new folks are welcome anytime. Any questions can be directed to Claudia Foulkes, 502-939-4129. Please email Claudia at Cfoulkes3@gmail.com to get the Zoom link and be added to the group email list for regular communication.

Prayer and Action for Middle East

Feel free to join us Thursdays on Zoom, in-person, or both. This group has enabled such support for one another as we all struggle to cope with the tragedies in the Middle East and the on and off cease fires and prisoner releases. We would be grateful to have others join us. Email Soni at soni.castleberry@gmail.com to get the Zoom link and be added to the group email list for regular communication.

Guns to Gardens Louisville

Safe-Disposal Opportunity, November 9, 2–4 p.m.

The prophet Isaiah offers a vision of a peaceful world in which weapons of destruction are transformed into gardening tools. Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church is joining with other faith and community groups in a small step toward bringing Isaiah’s vision to reality by offering our 7th gun safe-disposal opportunity.

The event will be on Sunday, November 9, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Lynnhurst United Church of Christ, 4401 Taylor Blvd. This will be our first event in South Louisville! It is an opportunity for anyone with unwanted guns to dispose of them safely and anonymously, with the assurance that the weapons will not be resold or be used in violence.

The gun pieces are forged into tools, art, jewelry, and household items by local blacksmith Craig Kaviar and local woodworker Matthew Karr of Karr Custom Furniture.

If you have guns you no longer want or need, or if you know someone who does, please bring them and help us “turn swords into plowshares.” Spread the word about this opportunity! For more information about Guns to Gardens Louisville, contact Eva Stimson or Soni Castleberry.

Did You Know?

What Presbyterians Believe about Confessions of Faith

The length and focus of the church’s confessions have varied according to which elements of this developing and expanding faith it has believed should be emphasized to meet the needs and challenges of particular situations. Sometimes the situation has called not for a summary of everything Christians believe but for a short, pointed confession dealing with one or more specific issues.

The Nicene and Chalcedon Creeds, for instance, were the church’s response to fundamental heresies in the ancient church concerning the identity of Jesus Christ. The Barmen Declaration was the response of some Reformed and Lutheran churches in Germany to what they believed was the one most critical issue in their situation in 1933, the relation between loyalty to Jesus Christ and loyalty to the state.

The Confession of 1967 reformulated important themes of Christian doctrine in confessional literature and showed their social ethical implications. Other confessions such as the Apostles’ Creed are short summaries of elements of the whole of Christian faith.
