Connecting hearts, minds, and hands to meet needs in our community
Body cams: Worth a thousand words
When a civilian gets shot or killed by a police officer there are always the same difficult questions: Why did this happen? Was deadly force really necessary? Especially in our urban neighborhoods, where trust in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department can be an issue, body cameras in use at times of police shootings could be essential in finding the truth for both sides. IMPD is taking this message to the people in a series of town hall conversations that are of great interest to UNITE INDY and its urban community partners. Police lives are often on the line. They deserve the protection and defense of a camera that cannot tell a lie and so do the individuals and families affected by police actions. That is why we are supporting full-scale implementation throughout IMPD. Have your say by taking a survey on this subject!
Christ Missionary Baptist Church, celebrating 100 years, is UNITE INDY's Partner of the Month! We were blessed to help celebrate the 100th year anniversary of CMBC during a service in which members wore authentic African dress, provided amazing musical worship, and engaged all with unparalleled preaching. CMBC helps those in search of employment by developing workforce skills through its Jobs For Life program and holds a semi-annual UN-Conference that trains and empowers future leaders in urban areas. The church's We Care Network advocates for families in its area, sometimes even tackling projects too large for its membership to handle alone, creating volunteer opportunities for the rest of us like Neighborhood Clean Up on Saturday, April 20th.
The Bible is full of "moving" stories... You know, the ones where people actually had to get up and go somewhere. We may be told to "Bloom where we are planted," but sometimes life pulls you up by the roots and plants you somewhere else. A new job, a new city, a new life. And all you can do during those times is hold on to the promises of God and pay very close attention to His nudges. When He calls us to go He usually doesn't give us an itinerary for the trip, but it always comes with unexpected blessings.
WE'RE IN! Hard to believe, but the long journey
to occupy 241 West 38th Street is near an end. UNITE INDY has moved into its headquarters and the sign has gone up! Although there is still much to do to with landscaping and parking areas, we feel like we're over a major hurdle. This is the meeting place we've been planning these long months!
The building houses a communal work/meeting area, a conference room, and facilities to host coffees, receptions and other methods of getting together with those who work in urban neighborhoods. Thanks to all the locals who have stopped by to greet the newcomers! Click Here for more interior pictures!
You? Volunteer?
Of course, who else? According to the Corporation for National & Community Service, only one in four Americans volunteer. One of the reasons is that most people have no idea about all the great things they could do for someone who needs a helping hand.
Enter UNITE INDY which has taken the guesswork out of finding a great place to volunteer in Indianapolis. You can even find a volunteer job that matches your particular area of interest. Volunesia (above) is a real and serious side effect of caring for others, and it is not curable. Take a chance on volunteering. Let's push that 25% number up a notch. Check out your opportunities to help Here . We are working everyday to build bridges between those who need and those who can help. Be a bridge builder and enrich your life by helping others!
Thanks for being a part of building bridges in our neighborhoods!
Almost 1 out of every 3 children in Indianapolis lives below the poverty level, yet our economy is roaring, and unemployment is at a historic low. But all this good news stops at the lines surrounding many of our inner city neighborhoods. In some neighborhoods of Marion County unemployment exceeds 20%. and poverty remains the overwhelming divider of people.

UNITE INDY is connecting people every day to make a difference for those in our city who live in in perpetual want. It builds bridges of understanding between those who need help and those who can help.
• Connecting — UNITE INDY introduces urban pastors and ministry leaders to suburban pastors and business leaders. We also make available—At No Charge—a web-based system that connects churches, businesses, ministries, to charities enabling them to raise volunteers and publicize needed items.
• Raising Awareness — Through print, television, and radio UNITE INDY is sharing the needs of our community and celebrating victories.
• Serving the Servants — UNITE INDY comes behind urban pastors and ministry leaders by addressing personal and professional needs for these men who work tirelessly in their neighborhoods to care for the needy and bereft.
