Happy Physician Anesthesiologist Week!
Here's to you, our VA Heroes!
Jan 31 - Feb 6, 2021
Physician anesthesiologists are guardians of patient safety in health care and make a difference when it matters most — in the operating room, in the delivery room, in the intensive care unit, and during unprecedented times such as a pandemic.

But Physician Anesthesiologists are more than experts in surgical anesthesia administration and airway management. We are also Pain Medicine Experts who help patients manage pain safely before, during and after surgery. We are Critical Care Intensivists capable of managing the sickest and most complex patients throughout the hospital.

Physician Anesthesiologists are Fellowship Trained Specialists of Anesthesiology, with additional training in areas of Regional, Cardiac, Thoracic, Neurosurgery, Pediatric, Liver Transplant, and even Hyperbaric Medicine!

Physician Anesthesiologists are Leaders in Patient Safety and Quality Management, applying safety processes such as evidence-based medicine, standardized policy and procedures, checklists and surgical care practices to procedures even outside the O.R., leading to improved quality and safer care throughout the hospital.

Some of us have degrees in biomedical or chemical engineering, and computer science. Physician Anesthesiologists are Scientists and Founders of novel drugs. We are Innovators of safe and effective technology.

"Did you know the pulse oximeter, was invented in 1978 by William “Bill” New, MD, PhD, then a member of Stanford's anesthesia clinical faculty."

Physician Anesthesiologists are Stewards of Resources and Business-minded Professionals, several having dual degrees in medicine and business. We are Leaders throughout the hospital, usually serving on several committees for our departments and institutions.

Physician Anesthesiologists are Champions for Public Health, some attaining even the highest degree of service to the nation, becoming Surgeon General of the United States. We travel internationally to Lead Global Health Missions. We Volunteer to Deploy when our nation's in crisis, putting our community before self. We are Active in our Communities, leading opioid education outreach programs at local high schools. Several Anesthesiologists are also Veterans to our Nation, having fought and sacrificed for our Country.

We are the Leaders of Anesthesiology Research, responsible for more than 80% of evidence based literature in anesthesia, leading to development of protocols and pathways which ease patients pain and speed their recovery. Physician Anesthesiologists are Authors and Editors of Highly Respected Anesthesiology Textbooks and Journals. Physician Anesthesiologists are Teachers and Mentors to the future generation of aspiring medical students, and Anesthesiology residents, and are Expert Educators of complex pathophysiology, Researchers of Best Practice, and the list goes on, and on.

For all these reasons and more, Physician Anesthesiologists honor the opportunity to care for each veteran as a treasured individual. While doing this Physician Anesthesiologists also search and strive to the next innovations in healthcare to expand the highest standards of care for our veteran patients!

“This week is in honor of Physician Anesthesiologists for their dedication to excellence and service in the care for our nations veterans!”
