The Heart of Leadership

The new year affords us opportunities to renew our sense of purpose and refresh our view of the path ahead. Often we are making the way for others alongside us, and in servant leadership, that means that we must first see and understand them, so that we may better support their journey. In this month's feature article, Dr. Toyin Atolagbe shares her insights on the role of a servant leader in building capacity in others to fulfill their potential.

The Heart of Leadership

by Dr. Toyin Atolagbe, Executive Director

"At the heart of leadership is a genuine longing to serve others while guiding them with grace to realize their full potential. "

My odyssey of leadership commenced within the four walls of my childhood home. Despite being the youngest of six children and the only girl, my dad nurtured me as what he called, “the first girl leader.” He made the case to our family that culturally in our Ondo town in Nigeria, the firstborn son and daughter are the only ones to attend big family meetings and engage in decision-making. While his argument always made sense to the entire family, I had no clue what this actually meant. I just trusted and played along, loving every moment of him helping me discover myself and grow over time as a female leader. During my formative years in elementary school, my leadership journey continued. When I was asked to take on more responsibilities in the classroom and questioned my ability to do so, my grade school teacher Mr. Adu would say, “You can do this, Toyin, come on! I have watched you do harder things!”

Reflections on Servant Leadership

Grow with Great Hearts invites you to reflect upon and apply content from our feature articles and other stories to your own practice of leadership.

This month's prompts, in the spirit of retrospection:

  1. In Dr. Atolagbe's article, she shares that in order to inspire and develop another, we must first affirm the inherent good in the individual. How does inherent good directly relate to an individual's trajectory for potential?
  2. What are the ways in which you already influence others to realize their potential, and where can you grow in your own ability to influence, to galvanize others?

Journeys in Leadership

Hear from two new leaders in San Antonio who took the next step in leadership this fall.

Jonathan Maiorano

Assistant Headmaster

Northern Oaks Lower School

“Curating experiences for teachers to pour into them and fill their cup as a kind of recompense for the countless ways they pour into their students is a remarkable and humbling responsibility that one cannot take lightly.”

The mission statement “to cultivate the hearts and minds of scholars through the pursuit of the Good, True, and Beautiful” is what initially drew Jonathan Maiorano to Great Hearts. He shared, “I looked through the website for close to three hours. It seemed too good to be true, a school dedicated to the joyful pursuit of the transcendentals I heard solely in the Greek dialogues of Plato and Socrates, and in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics in a community of learners? Then, when I interviewed with Jerilyn Olson in an Irish Pub outside of Princeton University on a blistery and snowy Sunday evening, she asked to me teach her how to add fractions, despite her awareness of my major in Political Science, which both humbled and challenged me to communicate clearly and concisely, while eating Fish & Chips!”

In serving across ten different roles with Great Hearts during his time, Mr. Maiorano rightly credits over ten individuals from which he drew inspiration.

Shanna Siller

Assistant Headmaster

Northern Oaks Lower School

“I now have a greater role in the conversations and decisions that impact our faculty and community, and I hope to continue the intentional leadership my predecessors have modeled.”

Like many Great Hearts teachers, Shanna Siller first came to Great Hearts as a parent, searching for a new school for her four children as the family relocated to San Antonio. “I was initially drawn to Great Hearts by the Classics to Keep, as well as the school’s commitment to leading our scholars to virtue.  I was impressed and excited about the list of works my children would read, which included many of my childhood favorites all the way up to core pieces from college literature and philosophy texts,” she shared.  As a founding family at Northern Oaks, they experienced the infectious joy of teachers sharing their love of learning, and Mrs. Siller was soon drawn in to join the faculty. Beginning first as a long-term substitute and then Apprentice Teacher, she stepped into a Lead teacher role in the middle of her Apprentice year, which led to seven years as a Kindergarten Lead Teacher, and later a Kindergarten Team Lead and Master Teacher. After serving as Dean of Teachers, she took on the new role of Assistant Headmaster, where she focuses on faculty culture.

Growth Opportunities

There are many reasons why studying the lives of particular leaders can be a valuable experience for anyone in a current leadership role or aspiring to move into school leadership. The deep dive into key leaders' lives -- their behavior, their words, their actions -- can provide learners with the opportunity to identify and refine their own leadership skills. The APEX Program for School Leadership recently integrated a new Lives of Leaders series. After launching the series with Thomas More last summer, we will begin the next course this spring, focused on the life and leadership of Martin Luther King, Jr.

In the words of the late Martin Luther King, Jr., "Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability but comes through continuous struggle." This course aims to evaluate some of Dr. King's most pivotal writings and crucial life events as participants consider the wisdom that can be drawn and applied to the continued work of building community at each of our Great Hearts campuses.

The four-week course begins in March, with a balance of synchronous sessions and asynchronous coursework. It's free for any Great Hearts employee to participate!
