Flock Block with The Counselor
Counselors met this week with their seniors in small groups to review the college application process. Topics included a review of SCOIR, the Common Application, the importance of deadlines, responsibilities, procedures, and helpful tips. All materials are accessible in their Class of 2025 OneNote – check the College Application tab.
Reminder to the Class of 2025 and 2026
Sign up to meet college admissions reps visiting Fenwick. Log into your SCOIR account, click on Visits and Deadlines and click Register. Students will receive an e-hall pass.
Senior Parents
Parents of the Class of 2025 are invited to join the counselors immediately after Meet the Teacher on Wednesday, August 28 in the cafeteria for our annual Senior Parent Application Meeting. Parents who have had students graduate from Fenwick from 2022 on do not need to attend as the process has not changed. The meeting will begin between 7:30-7:45 p.m.
Upcoming Opportunity for The Class of 2026 and 2027
Fenwick will be offering an official, free PSAT on Monday, October 14. The students do not have school on that day due to an in-service. Any sophomore or junior who historically scores in the 80th percentile or higher on standardized tests OR just wants to practice for the SAT is encouraged to test. Sign-ups will be sent to the student’s Fenwick email by midweek. For more information on this assessment, click here.

What Should I be doing NOW? Finalize your college list -- update this list in SCOIR in the “My Colleges” tab, and then:
- Decide your deadlines for your colleges.
- Make a list of when your application must be submitted and DO NOT miss these deadlines.
- Decide if you will send your ACT/SAT scores to colleges.
- Make sure the college knows you are sending scores or applying test optional.
- If you want to send scores, then you must sign onto your ACT account and pay to send to each school individually.
- Please give ACT/SAT 6-8 weeks for delivery. DO NOT wait until just before the deadline to send.
-
SLIDE your colleges into the “APPLIED” column in SCOIR, even if you have not yet finished or submitted your application. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL YOUR APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED TO DO THIS. Moving Colleges into the APPLIED column allows counselors to send your transcript on your behalf.
- In SCOIR, please sign FERPA release and waive/not waive your rights to see your info (we recommend waiving.)
- You must remember to SUBMIT your finished application to each college.
Please note that all the pieces of your application puzzle – application, test scores – if sent, transcripts, and other info if needed, can arrive at the college in any order. But all pieces MUST arrive by the deadline.
Counselors will host College Application Workshops during these upcoming Friday Flock Blocks: October 4 and October 25. Feel free to join us.
Scholarship Advice for Seniors: It is important for seniors to be searching for scholarship now for maximum results. Try these helpful sites:
Opportunity for Seniors: Miami University’s Bridges Program application. The program has a focus on promoting diversity and inclusion and provides high school seniors with an inside look at Miami through a variety of campus experiences where they engage with current students, faculty, and staff.
We invite students from historically underrepresented populations, as well as students who have a commitment to diversity, to apply. We welcome various diverse identities.
During the Bridges Program, students:
- Visit Miami's campus to get a sense of what it would be like to be a student here.
- Engage with students and professors in a Miami classroom.
- Eat in our student dining halls and stay overnight in a residence hall.

Class of 2026
On Wednesday, August 21, our juniors took a Birkman Assessment in their Flock Block. If you did not finish, please log in and finish ASAP. Results will be released on Monday, August 26. Keep an eye on your email.
Fenwick is continuing to partner with LEAP founder’s Flourish Coaching in Mason to administer one of the most impressive career interest inventories on the market. The Birkman will be administered free of charge thanks to our generous benefactors. The results provide the counselors, families, and students with invaluable insight into what makes our students tick. The Birkman has the most comprehensive results we have encountered because not only does it consider aptitudes, interests, and abilities; it looks at passions and personality, communication styles and needs. These results will be instrumental in guiding students on their best next steps after high school. The report includes information pertinent to an insightful college major and career search. Over time, the results will continue to provide poignant insight for our students as they plan for a productive, engaging, and cost-effective future.
Next Steps: Flourish Coaching – Once our juniors receive their Birkman results, they will be guided through a series of online modules during Flock Block this fall. Each lesson walks them through the results of their assessment and helps them understand and use online resources, job interviews, job shadowing, and internships to further their understanding of different careers.
Class of 2027

Counselors spent quality time with their new students during Flight School. While most of the agenda for the day was logistical in nature, our talk centered more around our newest Falcons creating the best possible experience for themselves while at Fenwick. Their number one concern overall? Making friends. It is a common theme for ALL our new students. So, here are a few tips from the acclaimed author Dale Carnegie:

- Be a good listener
- Make a good first impression
- Understand the power of a person's name

Emotional Wellness Tip
Throughout this school year, our students, faculty, and staff will be participating in and benefitting from our student-driven Sources of Strength initiatives. For this week’s challenge, we are asking each of our readers to take some time to reflect on your Sources of Strength in the areas of Mental Health, Family Support, Positive Friends, Mentors, Healthy Activities, Generosity, Spirituality, and Physical Health. As a family, share where each of you find support, comfort, encouragement, and motivation in these vital aspects for emotional wellness. Help family members identify those strengths if they are struggling. Encourage them to rely on those strengths when life proves challenging. When we identify and utilize our resiliencies and supports, we practice the love, acceptance, and understanding essential for personal growth.
