From The Pastor's Desk:
Dear Friends in Christ,
Summer is winding down, and we can see its telltale signs everywhere. Back to School sales point toward the resumption of classes from preschoolers to college students. The days are noticeably shorter, and the weather is more moderate. Vacations are winding down, and our attentions are being refocused.
All this brought to my mind our journey at Lord of Life. Over the last few years pages have been turned and attentions have been refocused. Ministries are being renewed, others are being born. As the Call Committee seeks a full time pastor, our congregation has defined our core values, and discerned our mission as God’s people. They are:
Core Values:
1. Care and Nurture of the congregation. (Caring for each other)
2. Compassion for those in need. (Compassion for a broken world)
3. To Make Disciples for Christ. (Growing followers of Christ)
4. Joyful Worship (Gathering as God’s People)
Mission Statement
Joyfully reaching out in love as God’s people!
I now ask you to do a few things. Read the above again, and ask yourself where you have seen these in our life together at Lord of Life? Then read them again, asking along the way what your role might have in living out just one of the Core Values? Soak these in, and let them sink deep. Try to imagine how we might more fully live out our mission statement. To truly be, more and more, "Joyfully reaching out in love as God’s people!”
We have been called to be the church, the people of God at Lord of Life! We have been given all we need to live out that call: Our lives, our resources, our time, and our faith. Even more, we have the daily, living presence of our Lord Jesus Christ all around us and deep within. We have been given so much; indeed, we have been given everything! It’s time to gather together again, to become regular in our worship and in our serving. It is time to be renewed, restored, refreshed, and filled with a deep purpose and meaning! It’s time.
May God bless you, and may you be a blessing!
Pastor Barry

Fellow Congregants:
The Call Committee is continuing their work on your behalf. At our most recent meeting, we carefully considered all of the information we had on our pastoral candidate, evaluating the candidate’s experience, interests, and areas of strength in ministry. We decided that this person may be a good fit for the needs of Lord of Life, but we need a more in-depth understanding. To this end, we requested an interview, which the candidate agreed to. We
will be scheduling that meeting shortly.
I’m sure that, to many, this process seems painfully slow. But it is designed that way for a purpose – both Lord of Life and the candidate want to understand as much as possible about each other in order to discern, as led by the Spirit, if this match will be productive, lasting, and beneficial to both parties. We will take as much time as necessary to do this.
As you know, while we can be transparent about the process, details about the candidate must remain confidential; we cannot answer any personal questions about the candidate.
Your prayers and thoughtful comments are greatly appreciated by the Call Committee.
Faithfully,
Judy Lerner

God's Work,

Weekend
September 6th And 7th
This annual event will be an opportunity for the members of Lord of Life to participate in community outreach activities. There are several events planned for this weekend.
--During the church services on Saturday and Sunday, Quilting Ministry will display the completed quilts which will be blessed during the services. On Sunday, following the church service, the quilts will be taken from the Sanctuary and moved to Fellowship Hall where they will be packed into boxes for shipping to Lutheran World Relief. Help is needed to do this.
--The youth of our congregation are invited to bring their school backpacks to Sunday worship to receive a blessing during the church service.
--Confirmation students will receive a Bible and a blessing as well.
--We will be cleaning two Tabernacle roads following the Sunday church service. There will be a group formed for each of the roads. Gloves, trash bags, and safety vests will be provided. If you plan to join this activity you might want to bring your preferred insect repellent and trash pick up tongs. Following the Sunday church service, please report to Jim Cuviello in the church parking lot to get equipment and instructions.
--Our other activity will be making sandwiches for the clients of the Christian Caring Center. Sue Dreisbach will be in the church kitchen and Fellowship Hall to lead our church members in this activity.

Quilting, Needlework, And Knitting Ministries
If you are a knitter, quilter, or one who uses a sewing machine, please consider getting involved with one of these ministries at Lord of Life. Whether you are highly skilled or just a dabbler, there are opportunities to enrich the lives of others who are in need.
Below are some of the things that Lord of Life is currently doing. You are welcome to join in!
| | |
Quilt Ministry
Lord of Life Quilt Ministry normally meets each month on the second Thursday at 10:00 AM in Fellowship Hall. There are useful tasks available for any and all skill levels.
Once each year, our completed quilts are delivered to a collection center. From there, they are brought to the distribution warehouse of Lutheran World Ministries and are sent to various worldwide locations. They are cherished by the recipients who use them as blankets, bedding, and to carry their belongs when a move is needed.
If you cannot be at our sessions, you can still help out by taking a quilt kit home and produce a quilt top at your leisure. Once completed, you can return the top to church or get a backing and batting from us to complete the quilt. Kits are located on the "quilt and blanket table" in the Narthex.
| | |
Lap Robe Blanket Ministry
The second ministry is assembling lap robe blankets for the residents of Wiley. Church member Barbara Urban has again supplied us with beautiful knit squares. Your help is requested to assemble them into lap robe blankets. The residents truly appreciate the warmth during air conditioner season, and the cheery patterns brighten their day.
On the “quilt and blanket table” beside Pastor’s office, are bundles of knitted squares, hooks, needles and yarn. Kits contain 16 squares for you to create a pattern of your own design. Please crochet or sew squares together in 4 rows with 4 squares in each row. There are instructions on the table.
Completed blankets may be placed back on the table.
If you have any questions, please contact Janell Reich.
| | |
Help For The Seamen's Church Institute
Recently, new knitting and crocheting patterns for The Seamen's Church Institute were added to our “quilt and blanket table” in the Narthex. These would be great to work on while relaxing in the evening! The Institute relies on volunteers to make items such as hats and scarves which are given to seafarers to keep them safe and warm. Penny Miller has done this for decades. You can ask her about it if you have any questions.
Here is a brief description of this ministry from their site:
The Seamen’s Church Institute is dedicated to Championing the Mariner. In the Port of New York & New Jersey, the largest port on North America’s East Coast, chaplains and support personnel provide pastoral care via ship visits, offer transportation services for seafarers, and extend hospitality at our award-winning International Seafarers’ Center.
You can read more about them at: https://seamenschurch.org/

New ELCA Bishop Elected
At the church-wide assembly in July, The Rev. Yehiel Curry was elected as Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Bishop-elect Curry was elected on the fifth ballot with 70.34% of the vote.
Here is some history about our new Bishop. Bishop Curry was elected in 2019 to a six-year term as Bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod. Earlier this year the Conference of Bishops elected him as chair. Among his many responsibilities in the synod is to preach, teach and administer the sacraments. He ordains, installs, and provides pastoral care for the synod’s rostered ministers of Word and Sacrament and Word and Service, and for its 165 congregations. Bishop Curry leads the process for resolution of controversies and the discipline of rostered ministers and congregations. In addition to interpreting and advocating the mission and theology of our church, he fosters an awareness of, and engagement with, churches throughout the Lutheran world communion and Christian leaders within his synod.
Prior to this call, he served as pastor and mission developer of Shekinah Chapel Lutheran Church in Chicago. He received his B.A. degree from Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., and his Master of Divinity from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.
He and his wife, LaShonda, are the parents of three daughters.

Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Uncertain Times
By Adam Hamilton
As the senior pastor of a large, diverse church in America’s heartland, Adam Hamilton has seen the cost of fear up close. When he surveyed his congregation on how fear affects them, 2,400 people responded, and what they said was eye-opening. Eighty percent admitted to living with moderate or significant levels of fear.
Unafraid is Hamilton’s insightful and impassioned response. Drawing on recent research, inspiring real-life examples, and fresh biblical insight, Hamilton uses a mixture of facts and faith to help readers understand and counter fears related to such outsize perils as death and illness, as well as the everyday anxieties all of us encounter. He invites us to:
Face our fears with a bias of hope
Examine our fears in light of the facts
Attack our anxieties with action
Release our cares to God
Purchasing The Book:
If you wish to purchase a copy of the book, you should sign up on the sheet in the Narthex. You can also contact Janell Reich.

Director Of Music Attends ALCM Biennial Conference
From August 4-8, 2025, Rick Krause (LOL Director of Worship & Music) attended the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians (ALCM) biennial conference in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. The theme for the week was "For All That Is To Be," which describes the ACLM's effort to equip people in all stages of life to love and appreciate the music of the church.
Rick spent time at Duke University where he attended various workshops. Some of the workshops included organ/piano improvisation, building a thriving children's music ministry, using hand bells or hand chimes in worship, incorporating contemporary music and words into worship, and developing a highly effective music ministry.
In the evening, there were worship and musical events for all attendees to enjoy. Tuesday night's opening worship service can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCMqrJiRl5M. Wednesday night was a hymn festival led by Tom Trenney (nationally recognized worship and music leader) at the Holy Name Cathedral in Raleigh. There were also two concerts: (1) Raleigh Ringers (https://rr.org/) and VOCE8 (https://voces8.com/).
In addition, Rick attended 4 different choral music reading sessions hosted by various publishers.
If you would like to find out more information about the ALCM or the conference, please contact Rick.

America 250:
All Americans should feel blessed that we have our freedoms, especially the freedom to worship, guaranteed by the founding fathers in the Constitution when our nation was created. As we look forward to 2026, the 250th anniversary of the united colonies declaring their independence from Great Britain in 1776, we should remember some of the events that impacted this course of action which occurred in 1775.
On April 19, 1775, the first conflict of the Revolution took place in Lexington and Concord. Then on June 17, 1775 there was the Battle of Bunker Hill at which the patriots were defeated, but the siege of Boston by the patriot militia and the newly formed Continental Army under the command of George Washington was not broken. On March 17, 1776, the siege ended with the British evacuation of Boston.
The flag flown by the Continental Army at Washington's Headquarters on Prospect Hill (Somerville, MA) was the Grand Union flag, also called the Continental Union Flag. The flag, shown in the photo, was first used on December 3, 1775 when it was raised by Lt. John Paul Jones at the commissioning of the Navy ship Alfred in Philadelphia harbor. It is said to be our first “American Flag.” The 13 stripes represent the united colonies. The canton was the British flag. George Washington is said to have claimed this flag represented our united colonies, being British, and the hope for reconciliation with the King.
