Welcome to the latest edition of The Week That Was, the City of Big Bear Lake's weekly newsletter where we share brief updates about city projects, initiatives and events. A lot has happened around here this week. Here's the run down:
  • On Wednesday, City Manager Erik Sund attended the Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors for California Joint Power Insurance Authority (CJPIA), the City’s insurance provider, in La Palma, CA. At this meeting, the CJPIA presented its Strategic Plan and Operation Overview and proposed budgets for fiscal year 2024-25 and 2025-26. Click here to view the agenda.   • On Thursday, Economic Development Manager Kelly Tinker attended the Visit Big Bear (VBB) Board Meeting. The Board Chair provided an update on a Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID) extension, and the CEO presented the May Analytics Report. Additionally, Kelly Tinker provided an update to the VBB Board on a number of economic development projects underway. Click here to view the agenda. City Road Closures for Pothole Repairs

Public Works staff will be conducting road work from Monday, July 29th to Thursday, August 1st that will require two full hard closures of city streets to repair potholes. Closures at these locations will begin 7/29 at 7:30am and should be lifted and removed on 8/1 at approximately 12:00pm.

 

Hard Closure Locations:

  • Tahoe Drive between Crane Drive and Chickadee Drive (allowing access to and from car wash and dentist's office from Chickadee side of closure).
  • 40157 Highland Road between Hammond Road and Mill Creek Road.

SR-330

  • Construction crews and Dry Creek maintenance crews will continue with the asphalt surfacing project on SR-330 from Highland to Running Springs. Work will occur on Monday, July 29th to Thursday, August 1st from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Friday, August 2nd, work will occur from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Crews will be installing rumble strips along the centerline throughout the state route as part of the pavement rehab project. SR-330 will remain open during construction. Flagging operations will be in place. Expect Delays up to 15 minutes. Click here to read the full Press Release.
SR-38
  • Caltrans crews will continue repair work on SR-38 Monday through Friday 6am to 6pm, to make various drainage repairs and install barriers for debris flow from damage sustained by the El Dorado Fire. This work will be located near Angelus Oaks from Thurman Flats Rd. to Glass Rd. Flagging is no longer needed. Changeable Message Signs will be placed ahead of work areas to alert drivers of potential closures and roadwork ahead. Law enforcement will be on site enforcing speed limits for traffic control. SR-18
  • Horizontal Curve Warning Signs: Contractor crews will perform work at various locations on SR-18, requiring flagging for traffic control in both directions along the routes during the week of July 29th from 7am to 3pm Monday through Thursday. These will be temporary moving flagging operations to allow work from one location to the next, with up to 25-minute delays. Work this week will occur near Snow Valley moving north. Semi-trucks and oversized vehicles: To avoid traffic delays consider using alternate routes to access surrounding communities. Drive safely being mindful of no truck signage on alternate routes, clearance, and low width zones. Click here to read the full Press Release.
  • Bridge Maintenance: Daytime work will resume on Monday, July 29th from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Planned bridge work along SR-18 will occur at the following locations: the I-210 junction in San Bernardino and the SR-330 junction in Running Springs. If needed, daytime lane closures may occur. Drivers should take precautions and look for signs indicating detour routes and lane reductions.   • Culvert Replacement Project (Ongoing): Contractor crews will continue work at various locations on SR-18 from near Big Bear Dam to near Lucerne Valley Monday through Friday from 7am to 3pm. This project is expected to be complete late fall 2024. Signage will be posted near the work area in days leading to construction activity. Culvert work will require traffic control during daytime hours. One lane will be open to through traffic, both directions, with flagging and traffic control in place. SR-138 & SR-189

The Slurry seal and traffic strips maintenance project on SR-138 and SR-189 in San Bernardino County will start at Bolingbroke Road and end at Rim of the World on Highway (SR-18). The second portion of the project will start at Lake Gregory Dr. and end at Village Road. Work is anticipated to start on July 30, 2024 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday. One-way traffic control with flagging will be in effect. While work may require temporary lane closures, expect traffic delays in the work area and be mindful of any signage indicating work area speed limits. The project is anticipated to be completed by late Fall 2024.Click here to read the full Press Release.


BVES Projects & Road Closures
  • Bear Valley Electric Service, Inc. (BVES) will continue work on its Radford Line Project, a critical infrastructure project to replace the existing above-ground sub-transmission line. This initiative aims to improve the reliability and safety of power distribution across the BVES service area. BVES is utilizing helicopters to transport poles and other equipment to and from various locations in Big Bear Lake. Helicopter flights will continue Monday to Friday, as needed, until the end of October. If you have any questions, please call BVES customer service at (800) 808-2837. Farmer's Market
Every Friday Through September, the new Farmers Market at Meadow Park gathers the best local produce, food and artisans that the San Bernardino Mountains have to offer. Parking is available along Park Avenue and the surrounding streets. Click here for more information.

Puptopia

Calling all dog lovers and pet parents! You're invited to come out to the inaugural Big Bear Puptopia Festival on this Saturday! Attendees can enjoy the Pawground, featuring a gigantic ball-filled dog bowl, an oversized fire hydrant, relax at the K9 Lounge and Spaw, burn some energy at the obstacle course, check out stunts and other events at the Main Stage, and shop for treats, accessories and more from local vendors.

Village Concert Series: 24K Magic

24K Magic, the #1 Bruno Mars tribute show in the country, will take the stage in the free Village Concert Series at 7PM. This high-energy show will have you singing and dancing to all the hits you know and love.

 

While you’re there, don’t forget to grab a bite to eat at one of the delicious restaurants in The Village and check out the Kids Zone, complete with a bounce house, face painting, and family-friendly games.
