Fair Market Appraisal Underway: Boaters’ Voices Reach County Supervisors

In response to the outcry over steep slip fee increases in Dana Point Harbor, the County of Orange has commissioned an outside appraisal to determine fair market rates. Thanks to concerned boaters and county residents, officials want to examine existing costs more closely to ensure they reflect actual market conditions.

News from Our Neighbor: Newport Beach Mooring Fees Increase on Hold

Up the coast, Newport Beach recently sought to raise mooring fees to better match market rates and recoup harbor maintenance costs. However, the California Coastal Commission rejected the proposal, placing any potential changes on hold until the State Lands Commission can review the plan further. If you’d like more details about the happenings in our northern neighbor, check out the Orange County Register article published on February 7.

Meet Jerry - Boater of the Month

Jerry Bryan captains his 42-foot Catalina sailboat, “Fly’n-Bry’n,” extending his 32-year record of racing triumphs. The boat’s name merges his last name with a pilot’s sense of flight—a playful twist that reflects his easygoing approach to life on the water. Jerry once covered 1,400 nautical miles from our marina to Puerto Vallarta, earning 30th place—no small feat for a self-proclaimed natural sailor who thrives on competition and the occasional draft beer. Though he and his wife, Shirl, call Waxahachie, Texas (about 50 miles north of Dallas) home, he visits California monthly to spend time on “Fly’n-Bry’n.”

Jerry credits his faith for keeping him afloat—especially after surviving a motorcycle accident that left him feeling as lucky as a cat with nine lives. Count yourself fortunate if you catch him dockside at Dana Point Harbor for a chat and expect witty banter that reminds everyone why life on the water deserves a good laugh.
