NATIONAL LOBSTER DAY
National Lobster Day on September 25 honors the taste of a seafood favorite--the lobster. Whether you like it naked, dipped in butter or love it in your soup, lobster is a seafood delicacy to be enjoyed by all.
The simplest way to enjoy Lobster is boiled then dipped in melted butter. A couple of favorite lobster recipes include Lobster Newberg and Lobster Thermidor. It is also the main ingredient in soup, bisque, lobster rolls, and salads.
Large lobsters are estimated to be 50 years old.
These marine crustaceans live at the bottom of the ocean. If they avoid the lobster pot, some can live up to 100 years old. Even though we consider them a delicacy today, that wasn't always the case. In colonial times, the lobster received very little culinary credit. In fact, the pigs and goats ate more lobster than the well-to-do.
While lobsters arrive at our tables bright red, they don't start out that way. In the ocean, they come in many colors. Some are yellow, green, or even blue.
Now that lobsters rank higher on the menu, consider these nutrition facts.
- Lobsters contain no carbohydrates and 27.55 grams of protein per 1 cup serving.
- In that same 1 cup serving, there are 129 calories and 1.25 grams of fat.
- Eating lobster offers an excellent source of selenium, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, and calcium.
According to the Guinness World Records, the largest lobster ever caught was in Nova Scotia, Canada, weighing 44.4 lbs.

Helene is nearing Cancun and the Yucatan Channel Wednesday morning. The storm is slowly intensifying as it grows an inner core. The motion is northwest, but should turn northerly later Wednesday as the ridge over the Gulf of Mexico weakens. This will allow Helene to enter the Gulf later today and begin to speed up Thursday. The storms will be under low wind shear, and very hot water temps. Intensification could become rapid Thursday as the storms nears Florida. Landfall will likely be Thursday evening in the Big Bend as a major hurricane. Helene will have a giant wind field, so impacts will stretch across a large portion of Florida throughout Thursday. The storms will quickly move inland into Georgia Thursday night bringing more rain and gusty winds.

Meteorologist Payton Malone WWLTV
Nearly all of Florida is under either Tropical Storm Warnings or Hurricane Warnings. Helene will have a giant wind field. Landfall Thursday evening in Big Bend area as major hurricane.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

"Strike" serves as the modern equivalent of the word "smite," capturing the essence of a powerful, decisive action. While "smite" evokes images of divine retribution or forceful punishment, "strike" encompasses a broader range of meanings in contemporary language. It can refer to hitting, attacking, or delivering a decisive blow, whether in a physical sense or metaphorically, such as striking a deal or striking back against adversity. Additionally, "strike" is commonly used in various contexts, from sports to labor movements, making it a versatile term that resonates with both force and intention in today's vernacular.

NATIONAL QUESADILLA DAY (Dia de la Quesadilla)
National Quesadilla Day on September 25 encourages us to pull a chair up to the table and eat some authentic Mexican food. While it's not a sandwich or a taco, the quesadilla satisfies snack cravings while also completing a meal.
Typically made with a corn tortilla and filled with cheese, we heat quesadillas until the cheese melts. Then it hits the grill or frier until just crispy. Some people also include other fillings such as cooked sausage, chicken, pork, or beef. And don't forget the toppings. Fresh tomatoes, salsa, herbs, sour cream, guacamole, or chilies bring a whole other level of flavor to the quesadilla. Don't forget to finish it with a squeeze of lime. Serve it with an ice-cold beer or a margarita, and the meal is complete.
Families love quesadillas, too! In households around the country, families include quesadillas as a popular mealtime solution. In fact, V&V Supremo recently found one in three people are making quesadillas at least once a week*. Additionally, quesadillas have crossed over from authentic Mexican restaurant menus to more typical chain restaurants. Even higher-end gourmet eateries include them on their menus. Their simplicity allows for easy customization and people of all ages love to eat to them, too.

Do you have a favorite weird brand name?
Did you ever wonder what Häagen-Dazs means? 10 odd brands explained
Published on September 25, 2024
Credit: Alexander Shatov
Some brand names are more straightforward than others. Some are named after their founders or places of origin, some are a description of their products, and others are simply words that sounded right to the people who created them. The following 10 are examples of brand names that, when taken out of their context, sound simply odd. What does Haribo mean? And what about Garmin? These words, now ubiquitous, don’t seem to describe the product they represent but still, are part of our daily lives. Did you know any of their stories?
1Yahoo!
Credit: Jaimie Harmsen
An unusual name when it was presented and now, Yahoo! comes from the book "Gulliver’s Travels" where the word was used to refer to unsophisticated youths. Of course, the founders weren’t trying to define its users this way, they just liked how the name sounded, particularly with the added exclamation mark.
While this name is certainly odd, it’s memorable and rolls easily off the tongue, making it a good choice for a tech brand. And, like all the following entries on this list, has become a household word, making it much more acceptable to everyone.
2Kodak
Credit: britt gaiser
Kodak is an example of a made-up name that doesn’t appear to have a lot of meaning at first glance. When coming up with the brand name, George Eastman, the founder, concentrated a lot of his attention on the letter "K", which he considered to be a particularly strong-sounding one.
As he said: "I devised the name myself. It became a question of trying out a great number of combinations of letters that made words start and end with 'K.' The word 'Kodak' is the result." Eastman also selected Kodak's distinctive yellow trade dress, which is widely known throughout the world.
3Reebok
Credit: Markus Clemens
Reebok has a weird name for a sports-focused brand. According to the company, the name comes from the word "Rhebok", which is a kind of African antelope. The founders liked the word, which they found in a South African dictionary, and felt it was a compelling term to use for their own business. After a slight wording change, the now-famous brand was born.
Since the antelope is a creature often connected with speed, it makes a lot of sense for an athletics brand. Since then, the word has been showcased everywhere.
4Xerox
Credit: Centre for Ageing Better
Xerox is a strange word, and it sounds unusual when spoken out loud. But, there’s some deeper meaning to this title. It means "dry writing" when translated from Greek and refers to the unique process of printing created by the Xerox company.
As it turns out, Joseph C. Wilson, who is credited as the "founder of Xerox", was looking for a term to differentiate its new system, hired a Greek scholar at Ohio State University, and coined the term xerography, which in turn, became the root of the name we now today.
5Twitter
Credit: Alexander Shatov
At first, Twitter was going to be called "Twitch" and then "Status." But neither of those names seemed to fit the bill. After consulting the Thesaurus, the founder, Jack Dorsey, and his team came up with the name "Twitter," meaning a short statement of inconsequential content, never imagining that sitting US presidents would one day use his app as a political platform.
After the company exchanged hands, the name was changed to "X" but most people still refer to it by its old name and even call the postings, "twits".
6Amazon
Credit: Christian Wiediger
Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder, wanted the name "Cadabra" for his online bookstore, as in Abracadabra. But when his lawyer heard the name and said that it reminded him of cadaver, the term was shelved. After that, Bezos decided to go with Amazon because words that began with the letter "A" were the first to appear in the old internet directories. And, apparently, he liked the word "Amazon".
It might seem hard to believe that the behemoth company that Amazon is today started on such a whimsical note, but it did.
7Garmin
Credit: Egor Myznik
A portmanteau is a word blending the sounds and combining the meanings of two others, like "motel", which is the combination of mobile and hotel, or brunch, which combines breakfast and lunch. Well, the story of Garmin’s name is somewhere along those lines.
This popular GPS brand’s name is a portmanteau that combines the names of the two company’s founders: Gary Burrell and Dr. Min Kao (Gar-min). It might sound like a bit of a lazy strategy for naming such an important company but, in the end, it worked.
8Haribo
Credit: Alexas_Fotos
The second portmanteau on this list corresponds to another odd name: Haribo. One of the world’s best-known sweets brand’s name is a mash-up between the company’s founder and its headquarters. Hans Riegel is the man who founded the company and Bonn is Haribo’s hometown.
Some people even go as far as saying that the name reminds them of an Asian confectionery of some kind, but, as we know now, its origins are very much European because there are not many names as German as Hans, right?
Credit: WikimediaImages
9Nabis
The third and final portmanteau on this list corresponds to another hugely popular company that manufactures the beloved Oreo cookies. The National Biscuit Company transformed its name into a mash-up of its old name: Na-Bis-Co.
The first use of the name Nabisco was in a cracker brand produced by the National Biscuit Company in 1901 and maybe it is because we have heard and read this name so much and it has become a household word but Nabisco does sound like a cookie or at least, a food company, doesn’t it?
10Häagen-Dazs
Credit: Dylan Ferreira
As it is common knowledge, Europeans make great ice cream. Therefore, a complicated and European-sounding name can be aptly associated with delicious ice cream, right? Reuben and Rose Mattus thought exactly that in the 1960s, as they wanted their business name to convey an aura of tradition and craftsmanship.
Häagen-Dazs is an invented pseudo-Scandinavian phrase coined in a quest for a brand name that sounded Danish. However, the company's pronunciation of the name ignores the letters "ä" and "s", and letters like "ä" or digraphs like "zs" do not exist in the Danish language.

In previous posts I have written about the sunken Confederate submarine discovered in 1878 by workers dredging Bayou St. John. It was photographed here around 1900 by Ernest J. Bellocq, who is remembered primarily for his candid and evocative images of Storyville prostitutes.
So, how did 27-year old photographer Ernest J. Bellocq assemble these eighteen men? Several are wearing short pants and sleeveless shirts which leads me to believe that they were likely members of one of the nearby rowing clubs who raced on Bayou St. John. But what about the others? Three are dressed in suit and tie, three others are in sweaters, one in a sweatshirt, while three others are in short sleeves. Are they all part of the same group of rowers or were they simply in the right place at the right time? Sadly, there are no notes or journals in Bellocq’s hand to guide us.
Bellocq became known around New Orleans as an amateur photographer long before establishing himself as a professional, making his living primarily by taking mundane photographs of landmarks and of ships and machinery for local companies. Perhaps this is what drew him to the old, recovered submarine. But, just as there was an air of mystery about Bellocq himself, perhaps this was just a fortuitous moment in time for eighteen men to be memorialized. This photograph is part of the permanent collection of the Historic New Orleans Collection.

It’s Tennessee Williams as you’ve never seen him as these unhinged vignettes probe the macabre corners of the human psyche. Wacky, weird, and wild desire splatters in all directions on the stage as three of Williams’ most outrageous stories come to life in a one-of-a-kind choose-your-own-adventure night of curiosities and creeps. Historic BK House and Garden's Soiree in the Vieux Carre-Sunday, September 29, 2024 | 5:00 – 8:00 PM
Please join us as the sun sets over Chartres Street for our annual Soirée in the Vieux Carré.
This year’s event is sure to be magical with music by John Boutté and Amber Rachelle & The Sweet Potatoes and a delicious Sunday supper by 12 Seasons Catering & Events.
Each year, our annual fundraiser supports a major capital improvement project, ensuring the long-term viability and versatility of the site. This year’s fundraiser will support major restorations to interior plaster and masonry.
We are pleased to be honoring our generous patron, the late Avis Ogilvy-Moore, whose bequest has allowed BK House to set up an Endowment fund, ensuring the long-term viability of the organization.
The Historic BK House & Gardens is a National Historic Landmark built in 1826. This architectural treasure is an outstanding example of a raised center hall villa and includes both Creole and American features in an elaborately detailed residence. BK House’s diverse history includes the stories of those who both lived and labored here for nearly 200 years, offering a unique educational experience to visitors, which furthers the understanding of New Orleans history. The house, parterre garden and lovely courtyard have been featured in several films and television shows and are favorites for guided tours, weddings, and special events.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.
