Reminder: Windows Server 2012 End of Life
While this has been a hot topic of discussion in many budget meetings, it's worth sending out a reminder about a change as large as this one.
Beginning in October 2023, Windows Server 2012 will no longer be an operating system that Microsoft supports. While this does not mean that servers with that OS will stop working it does mean two things that are notable to the business operation.
What Does This Mean For My Business?
First, this means that the operating system will stop receiving security updates at that time. The result is that if there is a vulnerability discovered, while newer server OS could be patched, that may not be the case for devices running Server 2012. This in essence heightens the chance of a security breach occurring on the network as a result of a vulnerability.
Second, it could eventually lead to issues with software or programs that receive updates frequently. There may come a time at which the software needs to be running on a newer OS in order for the program to continue working as expected.
What Should I Do?
There are two primary options for getting the outdated server OS off the network. The first is to replace any physical and/or virtual server running the outdated OS with a new server. The second is to look to operate without a physical server in place anymore. There is no universal best method for doing this - it all comes down to how your organization operates as to what the best solution would be.
