To our amazing Colonial mothers and individuals who take on the important role out there, Happy Mother’s Day! Your love, strength, and encouragement throughout the school year and all year long are an inspiration to us all. Thank you also for what you do to ensure your child has a positive learning experience at home or here at school. Your support is always greatly appreciated.

On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week most of our underclassmen will be taking Common Final Exams (CFEs) which account for a large percentage of a student's final grade. Please make sure that your student arrives at school with a fully charged laptop and the power cord for these important exams. Once the CFEs are all completed, we will follow a schedule for laptop collection. Please also remember that students will not bring backpacks to school for the last two days (May 23 and May 24).
We are now down to our final 10 school days of 2023-2024. I know everyone is looking forward to the summer break, but please continue to take advantage of each instructional day and keep practicing all of those winning behaviors. That is, those winning behaviors which make It Great To Be A Grenadier!

Grenadier Vital Signs
Attendance
|
|
|
From the first day of the 2023-2024 school year through this past Thursday, Grenadier attendance has averaged 89% (Figure 1) with Tuesdays being the the #1 day of the week at nearly 91% (Figure 2). The three low points seen in Figure 1 all fell upon the last regular school day leading into a major holiday break: Thanksgiving break (Friday, Nov. 17), Winter Break (Friday, Dec. 22), and Spring Break (Thursday, March 14). The peaks are generally linked to periods near special events such as Homecoming, Progress Monitoring Assessments (PMA 1,2,3) and FLDOE assessments. When these occur, attendance will range from 97% to +99% which helps to illustrate what is achievable by our Grenadiers.

As a part of her commitment to increasing student voices and leadership opportunities, School Board Member Maria Salamanca is proud to announce the launch of her 2024 Summer Fellowship! The Fellowship opportunity is part of her vision to work closely with student leaders in District 2 high schools (Colonial, Lake Nona, and now Innovation) over the summer on various projects that expose them to local public policy, develop workforce skills, and give back to the school district.
📅 The fellowship is a 2-month (June-August), 10 hours per week commitment.
📝 Each Fellow will have a project they will complete over the length of their Fellowship that aligns with their areas of interest related to education and their school community.
💼 Member Salamanca will pair each Fellow with a mentor in career areas each fellow is interested in.
💰There is a stipend available for those who are selected.
All non-rising Freshmen and non-graduating Seniors (10th, 11th, 12th) over the age of 16 are eligible to apply for this opportunity. Applications will take a holistic approach, looking at a student's overall motivations and involvement in their community so far.

Inspirational Thoughts at Mother's Day

Barra On Resilience
My mother taught me resilience. When I was a young girl and something difficult happened or I was struggling, she would often say "This too shall pass." While at first I found this sentiment annoying, as I matured I realized she was right. Life moves quickly and we all have a choice to look forward or look backward. She always chose moving forward.

Jeter On Accountability
My mother never let me use the word "can't" when I was growing up. I wasn't allowed to make excuses.
~ Derek Jeter, baseball champion
Johnson On Kindness
My amazing mama who taught me one of life's greatest lessons...It's nice to be important, but it's even more important to be nice.
~ Dwayne Johnson, actor (The Rock)
Lincoln On Mother's Influence
All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.
~ Abraham Lincoln, 16th US president
Curry On Success
When I was 13, my AAU basketball team lost a big game badly and I played worse. Afterwards my mother gave me the best advice I've ever gotten. “NO ONE gets to write your story but you. Not some scouts. Not some tournament. Not these other kids, who might do this better or that better. … None of those people, and none of those things, gets to be the author of your life. Just you. So think real hard about it."
~ Stephen Curry, basketball superstar
Albom On Praise
But behind all your own stories is always your mother’s story, because hers is where yours begins.
~ Mitch Albom, author
