"One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world." — Malala Yousafzai
Friend of Public Education
Teachers are the lifeblood of our school system. One of the most important actions the board has taken is approving the largest teacher pay increases in the Charleston County School District's history. Today, our salaries exceed the state average—an investment that helps us recruit and retain high-quality teachers. This year, school started with a teacher in every classroom!
In CCSD, we often say that teachers are the heart of our work—and it’s true. Every day, they shape their students' lives. Each year, schools honor a Teacher of the Year, recognizing their dedication, skill, and care. We are fortunate to have educators deeply committed to student achievement and continuous improvement.
When I visit our schools, I see commitment in action-- vibrant classrooms, students engaged in critical thinking and problem-solving tasks, and teachers actively guiding, encouraging, and inspiring their students. My role as a board member is to support that work by ensuring our policies and budgets provide teachers with the high-quality curriculum, professional development, and resources they need to succeed with their students.
I value every opportunity to learn alongside our educators, especially during district-wide summer professional development. I also appreciate the times when we can recognize their extraordinary work—whether at board meetings or at district events honoring Teachers and Principals of the Year. These moments matter because they reflect my respect and gratitude for our educators.
