Dear Sauce Subscriber,
As a PR professional, taking photos and capturing memories come with the territory, but it has always meant so much more to me. For long as I can remember, I've been the "unofficial" family photographer. I am the keeper of images and often a resource for those who need me to go back in time and pull up a memory.
Never would have I have imagined searching my archives for three loved ones in the past two weeks! To the far left is my friend and longtime Urban League of NWI colleague Dr. Deb Black. We grew up in the same church, and I just took this picture of her last Saturday as she was saluting the accomplishments of others as she often did! Little did I know that it would my last memory captured of Deb! Rest in peace!
The center photo was taken just over a month ago at the ribbon cutting of the YMCA of Gary. I am pictured with my "adopted nephew' Antonio Dominguez, who's mother has been a family friend my entire life. A budding entrepreneur and restaurant owner, he was poised to open the juice bar in the Y but passed last Saturday unexpectedly at the tender age of 32. WOW, just WOW! I told him how proud I was of him and how I couldn't wait to promote his brand, but he just got the biggest promotion of them all. Rest in heaven, "Tone, Tone!"
Last but not least, 3rd district Councilwoman Mary Brown was a joy to know! Her love for Gary and its people was unmatched. I had the honor of working with her in City government, giving her one-on-one computer lessons and most important, being her friend! This photo was also taken at the YMCA ribbon cutting, a project she championed for many years! Well done, Councilwoman! Now take your rest!
The lesson in all of this is to capture those memories and cherish them! The above photo of me symbolizes the applause for their lives, whether short or long, well-lived! BRAVO!
And now, I invite you to explore opportunities where you can make memories with the list of events and activities below! I'm headed to Howard University Homecoming to make a few more, and I'll catch you upon my return! HU! YOU KNOW! - C WHITT
