This month I invite you to think about three measures of a long life: life span, health span, and wealth span. Most of us grew up hearing only about the first one. How long will I live? But as more people reach their 80s, 90s, and beyond, better questions have emerged. How many of those years will I feel well? And will my resources last as long as I do?
Life span: how many years
Life span is the simplest measure: the number of years we live. Public health, vaccines, safer workplaces, and modern medicine have added decades to the average American life. That is worth celebrating, but life span alone tells us nothing about the quality of those years. Counting years is only the beginning of the story.
Health span: how many good years
Health span is the number of years we live in good health, able to do the things that matter to us. A 2024 Mayo Clinic analysis of 183 countries found that Americans spend an average of 12.4 years at the end of life living with disease or disability. That is the largest gap of any nation studied. The encouraging news is that health span is not simply luck or genetics. It is shaped by how much we move, what we eat, how well we sleep, how we manage chronic conditions, and how connected we are to others. Loneliness carries health risks comparable to smoking. A weekly lunch with friends or a balance class can be as much a part of healthy aging as a prescription. As a behavioral health researcher, I find this hopeful: small, sustained habits compound over time, and it is never too late to add good years
Wealth span: will our resources last?
Wealth span asks whether our financial resources will last as long as we do. Retirement planning was built for a time when people lived 10 or 15 years after leaving work. Today, many of us will live 25 or 30 years beyond retirement. On the Coastside, housing, food, and care costs are among the highest in the country. Wealth span also means protecting what we have from scams, knowing which benefits we qualify for, and planning for the costs of care so a health crisis does not become a financial one.
Why the three belong together
These spans are deeply intertwined. Good health protects our finances, since chronic illness and long-term care are among the biggest drains on savings. Financial security protects our health, because people who can afford nutritious food, safe housing, and transportation stay well longer. And both are strengthened by community. The goal is not simply to live longer, but to stretch our healthy and financially secure years as close as possible to the full length of our lives.
How Senior Coastsiders helps lengthen every span
Every program we offer is, at its heart, about extending all three spans. Congregate dining and Home Delivered Meals keep older adults nourished; classes and activities build strength, balance, and friendships; transportation keeps older Coastsiders connected to the community; minor home repairs promote safety and independence; volunteer opportunities offer purpose and meaning, and care management provides invaluable support when it’s needed most.
The years ahead are precious. Together, let’s make them healthy, secure, and full of connection, because that is what supporting successful aging is all about.
| | Thank you to our Coastside community for a very successful 48th Annual Pumpkin Run! | | Intergenerational Corner - New Partnerships | |
|
This month, we are highlighting two Coastside partnerships that bring our community together in different ways, from sharing the fall harvest to sharing a little kindness and creativity across generations.
From Farm to Table: A New Partnership with The HEAL Project
On October 28, Senior Coastsiders participants enjoyed a visit to The HEAL Farm, where we spent the afternoon exploring their two-acre farm and learning about the work they do to connect our community with local agriculture and healthy food.
In partnership with The Heal Project, we're bringing some
of the bounty of the Farm to Senior Coastsiders!
On Thursday, November 19, The HEAL Project will bring a fall harvest of fresh, seasonal vegetables to the dining room, where participants are welcome to select their favorites to take home and enjoy.
The Farmers’ Table will be offered quarterly, bringing the abundance of each season directly to our Senior Coastsiders community.
Watch for flyers announcing the opening date of our first Farmers' Table!
A Little Fall Cheer, Delivered with Care - The Boys & Girls Club
Fall creativity has been in full swing at the Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside! Students in grades 3 through 8 have been busy creating colorful, handmade fall greeting cards for Senior Coastsiders' Home Delivered Meals participants.
These thoughtful creations will be delivered with our home delivered meals, bringing a little Fall cheer and a personal connection from our younger Coastside neighbors to older adults throughout our community.
A special thank you to the students and staff at the Boys & Girls Club for sharing their creativity and kindness!

Did you know that age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss, affecting an estimated 20 million people in the United States alone? This condition impacts the macula—the part of the eye responsible for sharp, central vision—making everyday activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces more difficult. Common symptoms include blurred or distorted vision, dark or empty areas in the center of sight, and difficulty seeing in low light. While AMD does not cause complete blindness, early detection and support can make a meaningful difference.
For reliable information, resources, and support, visit the American Macular Degeneration Foundation at www.macular.org

The group performs the music of contemporary writers such as Gordon Goodwin, Tom Kubis and Vince Mendoza in addition to classics from Thad Jones, Duke Ellington and Sammy Nestico. Footnotes also features original sounds by some local Bay Area composers such as Wayne Wallace, Rick Walsh, Tod Dickow, Howard Cespedes and their own pianist Paul Mernyk.
Footnotes Jazz rose from the ashes of the Foothill College Big Band program after budget cuts dismantled the music program. The members of the Foothill Evening ensemble renamed and reconvened as an independent group, Foot Notes Jazz.

Speaker Series: Food as Art - Holiday Edition: November 19, 6pm, $10
Culinary historian Carolyn Tillie explores the remarkable intersection of food and art, tracing how ingredients such as eggs, wax, saffron, sugar, nuts, and vegetables have served as artistic materials for thousands of years. From ancient pigments and Renaissance table sculptures to marzipan, gingerbread houses, carved vegetables, and elaborate holiday confections, the presentation reveals the surprisingly deep roots behind many familiar seasonal traditions. Richly illustrated and spanning cultures across the globe, Food as Art: Holiday Edition shows how the impulse to transform food into something beautiful has long been part of the way we celebrate.
