31st Annual Cape Verdean Day Festival

On July 27, 2025, Brockton proudly hosted its 31st Annual Cape Verdean Day Festival at Campanelli Stadium, a vibrant celebration of Cape Verdean culture, music, food, and community. The event, which has become a cherished tradition in the city, drew families, friends, and neighbors together for a day filled with pride, unity, and joyful expression. The festival honored the deep cultural roots and contributions of the Cape Verdean community in Brockton and beyond. Attendees enjoyed a dynamic lineup of live music, dance, delicious food, and local vendors. Campanelli Stadium buzzed with energy as colorful flags waved, children played, and generations gathered to celebrate heritage and connection.

Brockton Cape Verdean Day Festival 7-27-25

More than just a festival, the day served as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the Cape Verdean people and the importance of preserving traditions while embracing new expressions of identity. The annual event continues to grow each year, offering a space for cultural pride, storytelling, and togetherness in the heart of Brockton. As always, the 31st Annual Cape Verdean Day Festival was not only a celebration, but a reflection of the vibrant, diverse spirit of the city and a testament to the power of community.

Historical Tidbit: Brockton History Museum - Fair Exhibit

Come check out the cool fair memorabilia that the Brockton Historical Society has to offer. It is like a blast from the past, journey with them to the late 1930's. This Brockton Fair program of events. Down in the left hand corner, we can see that the program itself only costed 25 cents! Isn't that something to hear? Below we can look at all the interesting events they have to list by the hour for every day of the fair. They had everything from dog contests and fashion shows; dimple contests to mini aircraft tournaments.

Right next to the Brockton Fair start of the program we see some ads for different places like a bank and an electrician. Usually today you could never see an ad without a picture attached to it. It's quite crazy to see the difference!

Walk Audit

Thu, Aug 14

6–7:30p

Starting Location: Centre/Quincy Street Intersection

WalkMassachusetts, in partnership with the Old Colony Planning Council, will be hosting another Community Walk Audit in Brockton as part of our ongoing efforts to advance walkability and equitable transportation. We hope you will join and support us in our commitment to creating safer and more accessible streets for all residents.

Our walk audits are designed to assess street-level walkability and accessibility, focusing on documenting safety, comfort, and barriers for people of all ages and abilities. These events are a critical step in our broader strategy to build more walkable, resilient communities and to advocate for transportation equity across the city.

This one-mile walk will start along Centre Street and wrap around by Crescent Plaza with a focus on pedestrian safety, school access, and neighborhood walkability, as indicated in the attached map. The East Side route will help us evaluate pedestrian infrastructure near schools and within residential areas, supporting safer routes for students and families.

The event will proceed rain or shine, unless severe weather is forecasted. Interpretation services are available upon request to ensure inclusive participation.

We encourage all interested community members, advocates, and stakeholders to join us. Your insights are vital to shaping recommendations for safer, more walkable streets in Brockton.

Please RSVP by emailing ispinola@walkmass.org or by using the QR codes on the attached flyers, available in English, Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, and Haitian Creole. We look forward to seeing you at this important event!

Climate Can-Do:

Pollinator Gardens

We can help bees, butterflies, and birds keep our world in balence with an easy- to maintain Pollinator Garden.

Pollinators play a vital role in food production, helping to pollinate a significant portion of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts we consume. By creating pollinator gardens, we can help reverse the decline in pollinator populations, contributing to both ecological health and food security.

It is important to plant native species, so New England flora should be your focus. To attract bees, it is suggested to plant white snakeroot, bluebells, or American trout-liilies. To attract butterflies, plant New York ironweed, white wood astor, or purplestem angelica. Hummingbirds, as well as the other pollinators, are attracted to spotted crane's bill, butterfly milkweed, bee-balm, and white turtlehead.

Economically speaking, seeds are the better way to go. Plant them a season ahead (Fall or WInter). Already grown plants, though pricey, are easier and faster. Not only are these gardens pretty to look at, it will save you some time with yard work since you don't have to mow!

It does not matter how much land you have available, whether it is a four feet by four feet or a whole field, pollinator gardens bring life and beauty into our world. You can be a part of this journey to better our planet, one plant at a time.

Some like it HOT.

"A woman is like a tea bag - you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water." ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

"Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking."

~ William Butler Yeats

"Be still when you have nothing to say; when genuine passion moves you, say what you've got to say, and say it hot. "

~ D. H. Lawrence

“The thing with heat is, no matter how cold you are, no matter how much you need warmth, it always, eventually, becomes too much.”  ~ Victoria Aveyard

“The Bermuda Triangle got tired of warm weather. It moved to Alaska. Now, Santa Claus is missing.” ~ Steven Wright

Slowly my mind wanders, as the heat takes over.

Let me see, I think: "What kind of mischief can I blame on the heat?"

Enjoy your week. ~ Jacquie
