Prayer for Guidance

O God, heavenly Father, give us thy blessing as we face the tasks of life. With all our getting of knowledge, give us wisdom. Help us not to lead a small life in a great generation, in a great world, under a great God, with great issues at stake. Enlarge our vision of the needs of humanity and give us an unselfish spirit that we may make of life not a trade but an art and a cause; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PW Coordinating Team Installation

This Sunday, May 11, the Presbyterian Women's 2025-2026 Coordinating Team will be installed during the 10:30 service. All team members are asked to gather at 10 a.m. at the State Street entrance to the Narthex for a group photo.

Luncheon Volunteers and Clothing Donations Needed for Program of Hope

Program of Hope, one of our Community Ministry Partners, is an outreach ministry to our unhoused and marginalized friends along the Claiborne corridor. Thanks to a grant from Synod of the Sun, we will host a hot picnic lunch in the Fellowship Hall at First Presbyterian Church, 5401 S. Claiborne, this Saturday, May 17 at noon. We need five volunteers to help with set-up, serving, and clean-up between 11:00 and 2:00. Sign up on the Volunteer tab on the SCAPC app or on our volunteer webpage. Contact Jane Rasi, janerasi@gmail.com, with any questions.

For the month of May, Presbyterian Women are collecting T-shirts (sizes L and XL), socks, and travel-size toiletries for Program of Hope. Please place donations in the basket outside of the Chapel entrance.

Graduating High School Seniors

Calling all High School graduates! We will be recognizing you in worship on Sunday, May 18. Let us know where you're heading next so that we can include your future plans in the bulletin and stay in touch as you enter this new phase. Please send information to camille@scapc.org by Monday, May 12. The Congregational Care Committee will host a brunch for graduating seniors and their families in the Youth Room on the 18th at 9:30 a.m. Please email Chris Hazlaris to RSVP.

Congregational Meeting: New Elder Class

The session has called a congregational meeting to be held on Sunday, May 18 following the 10:30 service in the sanctuary. The purpose is to hear a report from the Nominating Committee presenting the elder class of 2028 slate for congregational approval.

Audubon Park Walking Group

All are invited for a walk in Audubon Park on Sunday, May 18! This is a chance for churchgoers of all ages to share fellowship and exercise in the fresh air together. We will meet at 5 p.m. in front of the Land Building. The group will make one loop around the park and return (approximately one hour).

Evening Mass Gathering at St. Joseph's

Join us on Sunday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. for a special evening at St Joseph Church, 1802 Tulane Avenue. Father Ed Murphy will give us a tour of the historic church and share with us his experience as a Catholic Priest working with the poor in St. Louis, Missouri and New Orleans. It should be a wonderful way to learn about our neighbors, and we’re invited to bring all our questions!

Yak, Snack & Read

The 40/50's Yak, Snack, & Read book club will meet next on Tuesday, May 20 at 6 p.m. in the Land Building to discuss The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. The publisher writes, "Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?" All are welcome!

Sunday School Adult Classes

“Making Room: Celebrating Hospitality as a Christian Tradition” | led by Ashley Brown and Bev Church

April 6 - May 18 | Land Building Riverside Room | Recordings on Sunday School page

In this class, we explore themes of welcome, generosity, and the sacred art of making room for the stranger, challenging neighbor, the needy, and even those who may be difficult to embrace and welcome. Every class includes modernized lessons on hospitality by local expert and published author Bev Church. This Sunday's topic will be "Welcoming the Strangers in Our Midst and on the Margins."

“The Gospel of John” | February 16 - May 18 | Phifer Library | Recordings on Sunday School page

In its tone, structure, and portrayal of Jesus, the Gospel of John differs greatly from the other three gospels. It lacks the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord’s Prayer, and any parables. John’s story of Jesus is theologically complex, interweaving themes of light and darkness. He presents Jesus as originating “from heaven,” making him more divine that he appears in the other gospels. This Sunday's topic will be "The Trial and Crucifixion of Jesus" led by Beth Poe.

Youth Punchwall a Success!

The Youth's "Punchwall" Fundraiser this past Sunday was a great success and earned nearly $3000 for various youth ministry items, such as summer trip travel support, Youth Group and Sunday School curriculum items, and more! If you did not get a chance to donate, the punchwall will return this Sunday, as the youth are hopeful that the remaining ministry opportunities they have in store can get sponsored by our congregation. Shown here are Nick White and Liam Carlisle - two of the many youth who manned the wall Sunday morning.

Ashley Brown Attends New Ministers Symposium

Last week, SCAPC Pastoral Associate Ashley Brown attended the Kittye Susan Trent Symposium for Newly Ordained Ministers! Co-sponsored by Second Presbyterian Church of Roanoke, Virginia and Union Presbyterian Seminary, this program is our congregation’s gift to the larger church. Over the course of the symposium, eight newly ordained ministers gathered in Roanoke to receive guidance from experienced pastors and lay leaders. Together, they explored practical aspects of ministry, built peer relationships, connected with mentors, and gained valuable tools for their pastoral journeys.  Ashley is pictured middle row left in the pink sweater.

One supper club held a Cinco de Mayo Celebration! Pictured from left in their sombreros are Jennifer Foss, John Dunlap, Patti Pannell, Greg Browne, Harriet Riley, and D. Irwin Mackenroth.

YAF at Tulane Baseball Game Party

On Friday, the Young Adults & Families group (YAF) went to the Tulane baseball game to cheer on the Green Wave v. Florida Atlantic University. They gathered for a pre-party at the home of Tyler and Barrett Wheeler. Pictured below left are Sean Chaney and Jessie Bruggers, Caitlin Wallace-Rowland, Tyler and Lilly Wheeler.
