Highlights of the April 24, 2024, Session Meeting

Pastor Tami Recob opened the meeting with a reading from Effective Organizing for Congregational Renewal.

Among other actions, the Session:

  • Heard a report from church treasurer Jack Marcum on the transition of payroll and some other tasks to the treasurer of Mid-Kentucky Presbytery. Asked Jack to provide a full list of the treasurer’s responsibilities so Session can develop plans for a new treasurer by the end of 2024.
  • Authorized setting aside $340 from the Jean Leake Scholarship Fund for Garden Camp scholarships for children whose parents cannot pay for them to attend. The money will be available once scholarships have been given to children within the congregation attending Cedar Ridge and other camps.
  • Heard plans to clear out the garden space not being used by Stephen Bartlett and to meet with the leader of a group of Master Gardeners who may be interested in using church grounds and building space.
  • Finalized plans for the “Off to the Races” gathering on Wednesday, May 1.
  • Discussed plans for Pentecost Sunday, May 19, and agreed to continue the discussion at the May 1 gathering.
  • Authorized Soni Castleberry to seek more information on CHPC being a possible host for the Big Table, an event in the fall sponsored by Interfaith Paths to Peace.
  • Heard a report on filming by a local film company at the church in April, and agreed it was “a learning experience.”
  • Approved Stewart Bridgman Sr. to preach May 26.

Lucy Steilberg Honored

Congratulations to Lucy Steilberg, who received the prestigious Faithful Steward Award from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Lucy and two others were honored at an Awards Ceremony and Celebration at the seminary April 24. Our paster, Tami Recob, was among those there to cheer her on.

Commenting on the award, Lucy said, “For both sides of my family, education and church were the most important things. Louisville Seminary embodies both. During my husband’s longtime involvement with the seminary and my journey beside him, I developed a great love for the seminary and its success.”

Gun Violence Prevention

Thank you to the 18 CHPC members who wrote notes to Governor Andy Beshear in worship last Sunday asking him to create a state Office of Gun Violence Prevention. The messages from CHPC and other groups are being delivered to the governor this week by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Our words are powerful. Let’s pray that they make a difference!

Summer Camps Start Next Month!

Do you have a child or grandchild going to any overnight camps this summer? Would you like the opportunity to have them receive cards or letters of encouragement and support from the people of Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church while they are away at camp? If so, please let the church office know your child's name, dates they will be at camp, and camp address or email address to send the cards/letters to. This information will be distributed in the announcements section of Sunday's bulletin.

Garden Camp This Summer

Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church and Sustainable Agriculture of Louisville will sponsor a Garden Camp June 10–14 (overflow week June 3–7). The camp is open to children, ages 7 and older. Experienced children, ages 13 and older, may come as assistant counselors. The cost is $170 per camper per week. Fee includes lunch, snacks, pool fees, and all gardening and art supplies. Scholarships are provided on a sliding scale, as needed.

Garden Camp includes gardening work of all kinds, harvesting, food processing (grinding corn), cooking, canning (hot salsa), baking (raspberry pie, cornbread), storytelling, teamwork, cleaning, hiking, and swimming.

June 2021 will be the 19th year of Garden Camps. Support is needed to help cover the costs for low-income children, who usually make up 40 percent of the campers. For more information about registering and/or supporting Garden Camp, email Stephen Bartlett at estebanbartlett@gmail.com or call or text him at 502-415-1080. Or visit the SAL website.

In addition, Thursdays from 5-7 p.m. there will be gardening sessions happening at the garden for sharing labor, veggies and knowledge (weather and schedule permitting). Please RSVP by text at 502-415-1080 ahead of time.
