Maritime Fun Fact: Historically, all cats – though, especially black cats – brought luck to a voyage.
Public art adds beauty, culture and history to our waterfront. Throughout October, we have shared the Port’s array of public art installations through social media. The original art installations were launched in 2019. Since then, they continue to decorate our walkways and waterfront, highlighting our maritime pride and the history of our Port.

Our iconic Heron sculpture, located by the public fishing pier, celebrates the restored wetlands and wildlife habitat on Bair Island. This majestic piece was constructed out of recycled metal donated by our tenant, Sims Metal.

Pieces like the Heron help activate our beloved waterfront. We encourage you to enjoy the public art installations year-round or next time you're at the Port!
Warm Regards,

A ship's journey
What’s involved in a ship’s journey to our Port? A ship’s journey is not always a smooth sailing ride! Regardless of the cargo ship's origin, ships must travel through the San Francisco Bay and under the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and the San Mateo Bridge before arriving at the Port of Redwood City. Ship captains or "pilots" are responsible for understanding bridge height clearance, water traffic patterns, tidal action, channel depth and more. These factors are all critical pieces to a ship’s journey.

Winter fishing on the horizon
Thank you to our community for your patience as the Port constructs a new public fishing pier. We look forward to welcoming the fishing community back to our fishing pier that overlooks Redwood Creek Channel in December. Stay tuned for more updates as we finalize pier construction.

Award winning Port, come have a "Splash of Fun"
The Port of Redwood City was honored at the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) conference in Austin, Texas for its engaging campaign, “Splash of Fun.” The Overall Campaign Award of Excellence is a prestigious recognition in the port industry because it is one of 14 competitive award classifications.

The AAPA is an international organization empowering over 130 Ports and maritime industry partners to serve global customers and create economic and social value for their communities. The AAPA is a key advocacy and outreach partner for port authorities.

This is not the first AAPA award the Port has earned. In an impressive back-to-back recognition, the Port was bestowed the Award of Overall Communications Excellence (Category 1) in 2020 for its new transparent and engaging website. As a respected and well-known leader in regional maritime commerce and emergency preparedness, the Port is also emerging as a leader in communications.
