Greetings from the NRC........................... January 2025

In December 2019, our long-time and highly esteemed colleague, David Blazevich, The Bernard Osher Foundation’s senior program director left to take the helm of the Fleishhacker Foundation in San Francisco. The Osher NRC staff had little time to mourn his departure as we focused on fulfilling many of the functions David had always deftly taken care of. Thankfully, in early March of 2020 (remember what was happening about then?) Dr. Kelly Jane Rosenblatt was named program director at the Foundation. In the initial days of her new job, she was plunged into rough waters, witnessing the coming tsunami of eminent pandemic crisis for the Osher Institutes (to keep the seafaring metaphors going here). Kelly Jane instantly became part of our NRC team – out of necessity. It was a camaraderie formed by overcoming adversity and eventually, by celebrating successes. It’s said that the strongest storms make the best sailors. Through the pandemic, Kelly Jane was the best of sailors. Since then, she has remained a trusted advisor and wise strategist in partnership with us – and with so many of you OLLI leaders across the country.

As the carefully and long-planned transition of administrative oversight from the Foundation to the Osher NRC moves ahead, we thank and salute Kelly Jane, as she moves on. Her wit, counsel, and deep understanding of Mr. and Mrs. Osher’s intent for the Osher Network’s future has made a meaningful contribution to this Network. The Osher NRC will remember her example as we navigate the work we do in service to your Institutes for years to come.

Osher Foundation President Mary Bitterman said it well, “Kelly Jane worked magnificently through the pandemic – her nearly five years of service at the Osher Foundation have been characterized by professionalism, fealty to the Osher vision of serving our grantees with respect, encouragement, admiration, and collegiality. We know that Kelly Jane will continue to focus her myriad talents on important issues, and she will always endeavor to make the world a better place. Just as we will always hold a special place in our hearts for Kelly Jane, we know that she will retain the same attachment to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes across this great nation.”

We collectively owe Kelly Jane our abiding gratitude as she takes a bit of family time before considering her next career and personal adventures. As well-wishing sailors say, fair winds and following seas to you, our dear friend.

With appreciation and best New Year’s wishes to you all,

OLLI AT SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY

Piloting Virtual Reality in the Classroom

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at San Diego State University (SDSU) recently piloted a Virtual Reality feature to accompany two Egyptology courses taught by Osher Director, Jessica Angell. The SDSU Instructional Design and Information Technology teams supported the program and assisted in designing a tailored experience to virtually visit sites in Egypt with the use of virtual reality headsets on loan from the university. Osher students were able to step into an immersive experience that directly correlated with the topics covered in the courses. At the conclusion of each of the courses, students were invited to voluntarily participate in this special experience. A brief tutorial on how to operate the VR headsets was provided by John Alexander of the Instructional Design team and support staff assisted each of the students in getting started. Members absolutely loved the 360-degree experience of visiting the sites discussed in the courses and are looking forward to future opportunities to participate.

OLLI AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY CHANNEL ISLANDS

Fundraising on a Milestone OLLI Anniversary

Milestone anniversaries, such as the 20th Anniversary of OLLI at California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) bring welcome celebrations. Often, this is a chance for volunteers and staff leaders to recognize the evolution and growth of their programs. Increasingly, they celebrate not only with parties and events, but with concerted efforts to improve their programs through fundraising for facilities or technical enhancements. Anniversaries bring opportunities to look at the core needs of an OLLI and ways to enrich already strong programming.

As OLLI at CSUCI celebrates its 20th anniversary year, they have introduced a brand-new classroom learning lab and a fundraising campaign in which they are highlighting generous donations from members.

Longtime members Paul and Christine Magie saw the Anniversary year as an opportunity to significantly contribute to their OLLI, both honoring its 20 years of service and providing an example of how others might similarly donate. That funding added to a review of the history and progress of OLLI from the beginnings of the Institute in a university publication article outlining the successes over the years.

Today, OLLI at CSUCI boasts 705 members and counting. A fundraising drive for the new classroom entitled “OLLI 20th Anniversary Room to Grow” will build on the momentum of the recent gifts from those who have supported the program with donations.

The Science of Snow

Course Length: Four Weeks (two-hour sessions)

Course Instructor: Dr. Thomas Bellinger. Certified Professional Hydrologist

Course Delivery: Lecture

Course description: Whether we ski on it, drive on it, shovel it, or drink from it as a water resource, snow is an important natural resource in Colorado. This course will provide an overview of the science of snow. Over the 4-week duration of the course, we will cover the basics of snow (how it forms, melts, evaporates, etc.) The class will focus on the snowpack – how it evolves over time and how energy enters and leaves the pack influencing its structure and its gaining and release of water over time. Various factors that influence the snowpack and its eventual demise in the spring will also be covered including topography, wind effects, vegetation effects, etc. Finally, the melting process will be covered as well as science techniques used to forecast its contribution to our water supply. Impacts on snow due to climate change will also be discussed. This course will give participants an opportunity to understand and look at our snow-covered mountains with a new perspective.

QUICK TIPS FOR HELPING OPERATE AN OSHER INSTITUTE

Quick Tip - Use Hashtags in Your OLLI Marketing

Hashtags can be a powerful marketing tool for Osher Institutes by increasing visibility and engagement on social media. The first step is to identify relevant and trending hashtags related to lifelong learning, OLLIs, and older adult engagement. Such as #LifelongLearning, #OsherInstitute, or #SeniorEducation. Use a mix of broad and niche hashtags to target both a wider audience and specific communities interested in adult education or university outreach programs.

Another effective practice is to incorporate location-based hashtags to connect with local audiences, like #OsherInstitute[CityName], or use event-specific hashtags for special programs or courses, such as #OsherLectureSeries or #OsherWorkshops. Engage with followers by creating branded hashtags that encourage participants to share experiences, e.g., #OsherLearningJourney.

Monitor performance using analytics tools to refine your strategy and engage in conversations using relevant hashtags. Consistent and thoughtful hashtag use can build a loyal online community, boost event attendance, and highlight the unique offerings of Osher Institutes.
