F eeding Pets of the Homeless ®
is the first and one of the few national nonprofits providing pet food and emergency veterinary care to pets that belong to homeless people.
A note from our Founder
Dear Friends,

We are extremely grateful for all our friends who have supported Feeding Pets of the Homeless ® during the COVID-19 pandemic. This has been a truly trying time for everyone and we cannot thank you enough for your kindness and generosity.

For many, this time has also been one of reflection, to think about what is truly important to us, what we still want to accomplish and even what we wish for the future.

This month we will celebrate our 12 th anniversary. Feeding Pets of the Homeless ® is constantly changing and adapting, seeking innovative ways to connect people with our mission.

We hope to be here long after I am “over the rainbow.” Nevertheless, hope cannot be a strategy when one thing is certain: as with COVID-19 and natural disasters, we will have to face uncertain times again.  While we cannot stop those things from happening, we can do our best to plan, prepare and protect the things that we love.

The Feeding Pets of the Homeless ® endowment is being built for this very reason. An endowment for any healthy non-profit can act as a sort of insurance policy, helping the beloved charity through unforeseen tough and lean times and ensuring it can continue its important mission in perpetuity. In our case, that lasting mission is to provide for pets that belong to the homeless across the country. Forever.

You can create that legacy and you can help ensure Feeding Pets of the Homeless® is here for generations to come. You can do it with a gift that costs absolutely nothing today.

Unless a donor specifies otherwise, all gifts by will (bequests) that Feeding Pets of the Homeless® receives are placed into our endowment and make an impact that will last for many years to come. It is extremely easy to make a gift in your will. And, by letting Feeding Pets of the Homeless® know you've made this incredibly meaningful choice, we can celebrate your generosity today with a place on our Donor Wall of Paws.

If you would like to talk about our endowment, gifts by will, any other planned giving ideas you may have or maybe perhaps about one of our four programs, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at any time. I enjoy speaking with you!

And of course, NEVER make any decisions that impact you or your family's financial future without talking to your advisor(s) FIRST.

Stay safe and stay healthy,

Success Stories
Your generous donations at work
Allie
Nevada
April 2020
A woman in Nevada lost her job due to the COVID-19 crisis at the end of February.
She had been living with her son. When he lost his job, she could no longer stay.
She now lives in her RV in the Nevada desert and stops by a camp site to use the showers and get water for her RV. She called Feeding Pets of the Homeless® when her 11-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Allie, developed mammary gland tumors. Feeding Pets of the Homeless® contacted a partner veterinary hospital in her area and approved an exam for Allie.
Jake
Crosby, TN
April 2020
Jake, a 6-year-old shepherd pitbull mix, and his female human companion live out of their van in Crosby, TN. They stay in big box store parking lots or campgrounds. They have spent the last three years homeless and receive food stamps. They also hold a sign on the streets asking for spare change. Jake’s companion believes he was attacked by another dog because he was limping and avoiding putting any weight on his front left leg.

Board Member Highlight
David Kowalek, BVMS
Board Member and Veterinarian

David has been a board member with Feeding Pets of the Homeless® for approximately 14 months.

David is no exception and loves his pets just as much as we all do. He has three dogs named Ceilidh, Brecon and Chispa and one desert tortoise named George.

When asked to describe Feeding Pets of the Homeless® in three words, he responded, “folks caring together.”

David wishes more people knew that the human-animal bond the homeless share with their pets is deeper and more complex than the average pet owner.

Are You A DAF Holder?
Take the #HalfMyDAF challenge and nominate nonprofits for potential matching of funds

A couple, Jennifer and David Risher, challenges fellow donor-advised funds (DAF) holders to commit to granting half their DAF by September 30th and start giving.

There are billions of dollars sitting in accounts that could be put to use today to help many nonprofits now, when they need it the most.

You can nominate nonprofits to be eligible for matching grants of up to $10,000— and in eight cases up to $25,000.

The way the match works is as follows:
  1. The donor signs a form pledging to give nonprofits at least half the money that is in their DAF no later than September 30, 2020.
  2. The donor names the nonprofits that they wish to nominate for a match. Match recipients are randomly selected, with the exception being that nonprofits that promote hate or violence are excluded.
  3. In mid-July, at least 50 nonprofits nominated will be selected for a 1:1 match up to $10,000 and four will be selected for a 1:1 match, up to $25,000.
  4. On September 30th, a second round like the first will occur.
  5. While many match requests are for less than $10,000, the entire $1.4 million match will be spent. The Rishers anticipate over 150 nonprofits will get funding.

How to Help the Homeless & Their Pets During COVID-19
Imagine having nothing and nobody in your life but your pet.

For those of us stuck at home during this pandemic, our pet’s tail wags, cute antics, and loving eyes make us smile when we’re feeling down. But for people who have no home to go to, those licks, loves, and tail wags mean so much more.

For those sitting at home during this pandemic, have you considered what you could do to help the homeless and their pets during COVID-19?
