Pssst....I Have a Secret

For most of my career, I believed in the rules.

Work hard.

Show initiative.

Climb the ladder.

Effort in. Rewards out.

That formula carried me for nearly 30 years. Until it didn’t.

A corporate “right-sizing” decision flushed three decades of commitment down the IT pipes in a single stroke. It was humbling. Clarifying. A little destabilizing.

But it forced me to see something I might not have seen otherwise.

The real value of my career was never the title. It was never the ladder. It was never even the outcomes.

It was the lessons. The hero moments. And especially the zero moments.

Every interaction along the way was a moment of truth. And in those moments, I learned something powerful. It is within our control to create hero moments for others. Not by being the hero ourselves, but by creating the conditions for someone else to step into their spotlight.

Over time, those lessons became mantras.

Those mantras became mentoring.

That mentoring became writing.

Before long, I had written more than 100 articles reflecting on leadership and what I now call the HX, the Human Experience.

Then something unexpected happened.

I felt guided to bring it all together.

What started as scattered insights became a single body of work. Sixteen chapters across four sections. Each chapter centered on one core lesson from the trenches of leadership and business transformation.

I did not sit down and decide to write a book.

It came in a state of flow I did not expect. The stories poured out. Raw. Real. Sometimes uncomfortable. But honest. Honest about ambition. About failure. About growth. About transformation.

So here is the secret.

I wrote a book.

Zero to Hero: The Human Experience in Leadership and Business Transformation.

It is not a playbook of tactics.

It is a leadership transformation journey and a reflection on becoming.

On lighting the path.

On elevating the human experience.

On turning zero moments into hero ones.

I will be sharing more soon.

Very soon.

Keep a look out.

So now I’m curious. What's something you've been working on for some time, and are excited to release to the world? Tell me about it, and let's rally behind growth and transformation together!

Wisdom in Words

“Every interaction with a human is a moment of truth, it's either a hero moment or a zero moment.” -Nora Osman

Design the Moment

Before your next interaction, pause and ask:

“What would make this a hero moment for them?”

Most zero moments are not intentional. They happen because we drift. Hero moments require presence. They require intention.

Slow down.

Listen fully.

Follow through.

Design the moment....do not drift through it.

Louis Cho on Strategy being the LONG GAME

If you think I plan these newsletters way in advance....newsflash, I don't!

Last night, I came across a sharp post by Louis Cho on real strategy and it stopped me mid-scroll. And naturally, it was my "learning" for the day.

Strategy is slow.

The trap is fast.

Here’s my condensed takeaway from his 7 rules:

  1. A plan is a list of moves. Strategy is a point of view that shapes decisions.
  2. The quarter is for reporting, not building.
  3. Five-year plans comfort leaders more than they guide them.
  4. Real strategy compounds over a decade, not a dashboard.
  5. If it doesn’t require a painful trade-off, it isn’t strategy.
  6. Protect the durable core. Let tactics flex.
  7. Measure what the quarter cannot see.

That last one stayed with me.

Short-term thinking wins the spreadsheet.

Long-term thinking wins the market.

The quarter is a scoreboard.

Not the game.

If any of these resonate with you, I encourage you to read the post here.

A Slice of Love

Sweet Simplicity- Moments that Matter

I was blessed with a mother whose love language was cooking.

Not casual cooking.

Event cooking.

She owned seven sets of pots and pans, more baking sheets than most commercial kitchens, and enough crystal bowls to host a wedding. And still, she would say, “I need one more.”

Our home was always open. Dinner was rarely just dinner. It was an experience.

But once a year, there was something sacred.

My birthday cake.

A fruit-filled sponge cake topped with strawberry jello, slices of strawberries suspended inside like stained glass. Whipped cream along the sides. Nuts pressed gently into the frosting.

She made it only for me.

I have three siblings. They protested every year. She did not care.

It was Nora’s cake.

Today, my mom lives in an advanced state of memory loss. Some days she cannot recall my name. But she still greets me with the same warmth. The same smiling eyes.

This Valentine’s Day, I tried to recreate the cake.

Wrong cake mix.

Jello too thin.

No heavy cream for the frosting.

No nuts.

Transporting it felt like a high-risk operation.

It wasn’t perfect.

It was very good.

More importantly, it carried the spirit of love.

My husband. My children. My mom and dad. All of us sharing slices together.

Will I make it again? Absolutely.

Next time, I’ll get the sponge right. The jello will set perfectly. The whipped cream will hold. It will look picture perfect, like hers.

But for now, I’ll take a slice of love any day.

Because sometimes the recipe doesn’t have to be flawless.

It just has to be full of heart.

Got a recipe or an old tradition you're holding onto all these years? Tell me about it! Would love to hear it...it helps us see how we're more alike than different.
