A Crafty Shopping Event
On a rather cool August Sunday, a new craft store, The Craftpreneur, held its first-ever open crafts market event. It was a way for crafters to sell their own products or unwanted scraps and materials. From spools of yarn, pieces of fabric, leftover drinking glasses, patterns, to stranger trinkets and bobs, anything that could be used in crafting were all found here. Many of these crafters began their work in 2020, focusing on being creative during the Covid lockdown, and already had a large stockpile of extras.
The Craftpreneur is a clothing print store in Raynham that was established in 2020 as well. Craftpreneur Kelly Parker has always been interested in the arts, mainly clothes creation and crafts. She’s always had the idea for a crafts-based store, and around the time of the pandemic, started to make her dream a reality. Initially it was a vinyl store and evolved into a general clothes and crafts store; which, with the help and support from her family, has become a thriving business.
Always one to make things happen, Kelly's Craftpreneur has been a part of many different events: Bark in the Park, Black Hat Brew Works' Summerfest, and Fire for Effect Foundation's efforts to help veterans. Another open crafts fair with more supplies will be held October 8 so definitely check them out then!

Raynham Center School
turned Town Hall
Originally a schoolhouse was established in this spot near the oldest iron works, in 1652. This was long before Raynham split off from Taunton in 1731. Prior to the fire in 1918, 68 children were schooled in the building; 36 in elementary school, and 32 in middle to freshman year.
During World War I, teachers were hard to come by, each teacher had an average of 38 students spanning 5 grades. Due to the fire, and the teacher availability, students were moved to the old town hall building on Orchard Street, known at the time as 'The Townhouse'. The students needed to split the day between each other, with elementary school students in the morning, and middle school students being taught in the afternoon.
Fortunately, the next year, plans were set into motion to rebuild the school at 558 South Main St The new school would hold up to 8th grade instead of up to 9th. The new school was built in 1920. 11 years later an expansion was approved as the student population grew. and in 1987, the school was renamed to the William J. Sullivan Jr. School, honoring the retired superintendent, and where his original office was housed.
In 2003, when the Raynham Middle School building was completed, the Sullivan schoolhouse was no longer needed to educate Raynham's children, and now serves as the Raynham Town Hall.

Labor Day was created to recognize the social and economic achievements made by American workers in the nineteenth century. There was such excitement at the improvements in our quality of life, state and local celebrations around the country were organized by workers and unions. Between 1885 - 1894, 32 states had passed an official Labor Day holiday. Although there is not a clear founder, records show Peter J McGuire (General Secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners), and Matthew Maguire ( a machinist and Secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York) both played a role in the founding of a national Labor Day.
President Grover Cleveland made Labor Day national holiday, signing it into law, June 28, 1894 for the first Monday in September. Labor Day is often celebrated with parades, parties, and festivals.

Climate Can-Do: Limit Fast Fashion
Fashion is another tool to help combat climate change and protect the environment.
First, how does fashion harm the environment? In efforts to meet demands and popularity for society’s trendiest clothes, many big clothing brands end up wasting fabrics and energy as they rush to pump out clothes for consumers at cheap prices. This is known as fast fashion.
According to the United Nations Environment Program, the “pollution, waste, and emissions of fast fashion are fueling the planetary crisis” as "plastic fibers are polluting the oceans”. In addition, the “wastewater and toxic dyes” from the industrial plants that are used to create the clothes only further contaminate the surrounding natural environments.
Sustainable clothing: While buying sustainable and organic clothing is a healthier alternative, it can also be expensive or inaccessible for many people. Fortunately, there are still many ways to limit your own fashion consumption and help the planet without sacrificing your wallet.
Diversify your clothing store options: Buying secondhand clothing from local thrift stores or on-line platforms such as ThredUp, Depop, and Poshmark is an excellent alternative for getting clothes.
Consider clothes before buying them: We all have that item, or a few, that sit in the back of the closet untouched for the past two years. This is why the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University suggests buying an item only if you can see yourself wearing it at least 30 times. Thinking twice is a good way to limit how much fast fashion and wasted clothing ends up crowding your closet.
Support brands that have good sustainability practices: This online directory: Good on You allows you to search your favorite brands and view their sustainability/ethical work ratings. The website also provides a wide range of stores that solely produce sustainable fashion that you can occasionally invest in.
By researching, staying mindful, and practicing eco-friendly shopping habits, you can reduce carbon costs and the impact of waste on our landfills and atmosphere!
