A publication of Idylwood Civic Club

Hello Diane,

Just a reminder, popping fireworks in the City of Houston (including Idylwood) is illegal.

President's Corner

The Civic Club started our summer of Zoom meetings with our State Representative, Christina Morales, speaking to us in June about the recent legislative session. Representative Morales’ comments were insightful and useful for all of us. She has promised to return to the Civic Club in the fall for updates on the Special Session.

Our upcoming July 15 Meeting will also be by Zoom. This month’s meeting will focus on the speed humps that the City is considering for Idylwood Dr. Read the article below for the recent background that led to our neighborhood’s petition for speed humps - it’s much more than slowing down the traffic!

Our August 19 Civic Club meeting will again be a Zoom call, while the September 16 meeting will be in person at Spurlock Park (with Zoom as a backup in case of inclement weather).

Idylwood Civic Club is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Meeting ID: 824 0404 5520

Passcode: 194678

Best Regards,

Diane Schenke

Traffic Calming on Idylwood Drive

Our Council Member Joaquin Martinez has allocated for speed humps on Idylwood Drive, which could be installed in the next year. This process started in the spring of 2024, after a series of major accidents and near misses. At the April 2024 Civic Club meeting, we had a petition signed by over 50 neighbors requesting speed humps for Idylwood. These requests arose from the following incidents:

Residents at 1745 Idylwood had two significant car accidents in 2023 and 2024 in front of their house. In one incident the vehicle jumped the curb and landed in the next door neighbor’s yard. For the other, the vehicle flipped upside down and landed in their yard. As a result, they feel very unsafe allowing their children to run on the sidewalks or learn to ride a bike on Idylwood because of the tendency for cars to speed through our neighborhood.

About a year ago, the house at 6701 Park had a car travel through the stop sign on Idylwood and crash through the wrought-iron fence and stop inches from the house itself. A similar event occurred later, but with less damage.

Residents at 6707 Park had an incident in which several cars chased one another around Spurlock Park (along N. MacGregor, Merry and Idylwood), stopped in front of their house and started fighting and shooting at each other. They also have reservations about letting their small children play in front of the house and are careful about using Spurlock Park.

As for next steps, the City will be surveying the neighborhood for the proper placement of the speed cushions on Idylwood Drive. Once the locations are determined, Houston Fire Department will review the plans to ensure emergency vehicles will maintain access. The City will then seek neighborhood comments about the placement of traffic calming devices. While speed humps may be a nuisance to you, please remember the very real danger your neighbors face due to excessive speed on Idylwood Drive.

Block Captain Appreciation

Event for Block Captains Appreciation and New Welcome Committee Discussion

In case you didn’t know, it’s not magic that delivers neighborhood announcements to your door - it’s the work of our incredible Block Captains. These dedicated neighbors are the hands and feet of our community, helping keep us informed, connected, and strong. Simply put, the Civic Club wouldn’t be who we are without them.

In September we will be hosting a Thank You dinner at the Studak’s home to thank the Block Captains for their hard work.

At this dinner we will also be investigating the idea of reviving a Welcome Committee. This warm tradition of greeting new neighbors and building community from day one was lost during COVID and we would like to see this tradition return. Even if you are not a Block Captain, but are interested in joining us in this discussion, please reach out to Richard Vela to indicate your interest in attending the planning session. July 2025 Idylwood Pets of the Month

Joann and Frank Lovoi enjoy their motley crew:

Dixie, Libby, Lulu, and Tank !!!!

Hi, my name is Tank.

I like going to the country with my housemates. But when they go running into the woods, I stay at the house with my mom, unless of course, they are chasing a rabbit or something. ThenI am happy to follow!

Hi, I'm Libby.

I was rescued from the woods near Huntsville Tx. with my brother. We are a Great Pyrenees and Great Dane mix. I still love to run in the woods and play, but I love lying around on the couch, too.

Hi, I'm Lulu.

I was rescued in Houston and I am so happy now. I live in Idylwood but spend time in the country running and playing. I am half poodle, love to romp and play in the water and dirt.

Hi, my name is Dixie.

I am 7 years old- rescued from the streets of Houston when I was 9 weeks old. I was so emaciated the vet said I wouldn’t live. But, my DNA test said I am “Super Mutt”!! I love to run in the woods and take afternoon naps.

Neighbors: Submit your pet(s) to be featured in upcoming newsletters by sending 1-4 photos with a short story about your best friend(s) with the subject line "Pet(s) of the Month" to: idylwoodgardenclub@gmail.com

Tree Planting Guide For Houston

As our Idylwood trees age, succumb to disease and storm damage, and grow too close to our homes and power lines, we sadly see these marvelous companions disappear. Now is a good time to start researching the best trees for your yard to properly fit your needs, desires and space.

The Houston Area Urban Forestry Council has a fabulous planting guide for trees in the Houston area. This guide is packed with all the basic info you need when considering planting new trees.

Yard of the Month

July 2025

The Idylwood Garden Club's Yard of the Month goes to

Alicia and Rudy Cabrera

at 6649 Park Lane.

Alicia and Rudy moved into Idylwood in 2006. They are both born and raised in Houston.

They say that the historical and charming homes are some of the reasons that attracted them to Idylwood as well as the convenient location.

Both Alicia and Rudy enjoy "cutting our own yard and we love to work on our landscaping!"  Blooming flowers include Petunias, Vinca, and a lovely Crape Myrtle, all mixed with a variety of colorful evergreen shrubs to add depth, color, texture, and levels. All together the results are quite pleasing and are great examples of mixing a variety of plants, shrubs, and trees which help make Idylwood beautiful!

Fall Prep

Prepare vegetable gardens for fall planting – pull weeds & add compost.

Plant pumpkin seeds for October Jack-O-Lanterns. Other seeds to plant: corn, cucumber, okra, black-eyed peas, beans, cantaloupe.

Plant vegetable plants: tomato, peppers, squash & cucumbers.

Plant herbs: basil, oregano, thyme.

Deadhead annuals and perennials to encourage a great fall showing.

Pests

Identify insect and fungal problems and treat them with the least toxic solution.

Eliminate standing water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.

Water

Water deeply, especially trees. Don’t rely on your sprinkler system to water adequately in summer.

Check irrigation systems for proper function – may need to extend the watering periods to make sure roots are watered.

Stay hydrated and protect yourself from UV rays (sunscreen/hats/sunglasses).

Birds

Feed the birds. Keep birdbaths clean and filled with fresh water.
