Welcome to the first issue under our new name: Beyond The Stage. We're still bring you the newsletter you know, while making room for more of the music, entertainment, and conversations that are shaping the culture.

Hov Picked Hov: Jay-Z Chooses Himself for the Super Bowl

– Smart Business or Selfish Move?

The rumors are officially over, and the internet is completely losing its mind. Sources close to the NFL production have confirmed that Jay-Z will headline the 2027 Super Bowl Halftime Show at SoFi Stadium.

But here is the twist that has the entire culture talking: Jay-Z chose himself.

Since 2019, Jay-Z’s Roc Nation has served as the official strategist and co-producer for the NFL’s marquee musical event, orchestrating legendary performances from Dr. Dre, Rihanna, and Usher. But after organizers reportedly struggled to lock down other major pop targets like Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber, Hov decided to step out of the boardroom, pull rank, and give himself the world’s most coveted 13-minute performance window.

Depending on who you ask on the timeline, this is either the greatest power move in hip-hop history or the ultimate act of executive nepotism. Let's break down the two sides dividing the culture today:

• The Case for Greatness: Hip-hop is built on bravado, ownership, and the American Dream. Next year marks the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint. There is no better time for the 56-year-old billionaire to take a literal victory lap. Plus, his rolodex is unmatched. We are talking about potential guest appearances from Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Eminem, or even a joint spectacle with Beyoncé.

• The Case for Nepotism: You can’t ignore the optics. Awarding the biggest gig in television to yourself looks incredibly self-serving. Critics are already drawing parallels to the 2025 Kendrick Lamar selection, where many felt Jay-Z bypassed a legendary Lil Wayne moment in New Orleans. By taking the stage himself now, he is giving major ammunition to everyone who says he uses his NFL partnership to feed his own legacy rather than uplifting the community.

The Verdict: At the end of the day, hip-hop has always been about seizing control. Jay-Z spent the first half of his career fighting to get past the gatekeepers; he spent the second half becoming the gatekeeper. Forcing the NFL to watch a billionaire rapper crown himself on the world’s biggest stage is the ultimate hip-hop flex.

Platform Spotlight

Heal. Grow. Elevate.

The Mission Behind the Movement.

Don't be Afraid to shine your light.

The Elevation: Meet Z, the visionary turning creativity, healing, and connection into opportunities for others to rise.

Some people enter the entertainment industry looking for recognition. Others arrive with a purpose greater than themselves. For Z, the founder of The Elevation, it's about creating opportunities, amplifying voices, and helping others reach their highest potential.

Originally from Southern Maryland, Z is a a mechanical engineer by trade, a creative entrepreneur, and a passionate advocate for healing and personal development. Her love fr music, poetry, and art inspired a journey that would eventually become The Elevation.

Founded in 2023, The Elevation began as a digital platform that was dedicated to providing healing resources. Recognizing the powerful role that music has played in her own personal healing journey, Z expanded her vision to embrace independent artists, entrepreneurs, and creatives.

Built around the mission "Heal. Grow. Elevate.", the platform combines authentic storytelling, artist interviews, media coverage, financial literacy resources, mindset coaching, and networking opportunities.

Beyond the Microphone

What makes Z’s approach special is her genuine interest in the person behind the talent. Her interviews aren’t about rehearsed answers or manufactured moments. They’re about creating comfortable spaces where people can share their experiences, accomplishments, and challenges.

One particularly meaningful interview with artists Zo Havin and J2L reinforced her purpose. Their openness about mental health, personal loss, and using music as an emotional outlet reminded Z that creativity can be much more than entertainment. Sometimes, it’s a pathway to healing.

Building Connections, Creating Opportunities

Through her partnership with Under The Influence, Z provides media coverage, interviews, and promotional support that help independent artists gain visibility. It’s also where The Elevation and Veiga Entertainment crossed paths, demonstrating the importance of independent platforms supporting one another.

As Z puts it, “Collaboration creates leverage.” She believes the independent entertainment community becomes stronger when artists, promoters, and media platforms share knowledge, resources, and opportunities rather than operating separately.

The Vision Is Bigger

While The Elevation continues to grow, Z’s ambitions reach far beyond entertainment media. She envisions a vaulable networking system connecting creative development, entrepreneurship, mentorship, financial education, and community empowerment.

For Z, success isn’t measured solely by recognition or financial gain. It’s also about personal growth, meaningful relationships, and the ability to help others build sustainable futures.

The Elevation isn’t simply a media platform. It’s a reflection of one woman’s journey and her commitment to helping others rise.

And with Z leading the vision, this is only the beginning.

Heal. Grow. Elevate.

The Stage That Brought Us Together

This past week, artist Slizzy shared a throwback video from his performance at The House of Hip Hop, the open mic series that I produced with DJ Jo’Iyce, now of 93.9 WKYS. Seeing that moment again brought back more than a memory. It brought back a piece of DMV history.

The House of Hip Hop was one of those “you had to be there” experiences. The earliest of the Virginia open mic series, was hosted at the historic Landmark Mall. if you were part of that era, chances are you performed on that stage. Artists came to share their work, meet other creatives, find their people, and take a chance on themselves. The room became a meeting place for talent and possibility. It was the foundation of some of the most epic collab projects too.

That is the power of an open mic. A stage can give an artist a first audience, a new connection, or the confidence to keep going. It can help build a community around music. But networking only opens the door. Building your own team helps you to grow with purpose.

In an industry this small, loyalty and perception shape how people see you. They can influence whether someone chooses to work with you, support your vision, or open another door. And as you grow, protecting that vision may mean creating distance. Sometimes you need to limit someone’s access or remove them from your circle altogether. It is not always about burning bridges. Sometimes it is about being thoughtful about who gets to walk beside you.

The House of Hip Hop reminds me that platforms matter. The right room can bring people together, give talent a place to be seen, and create memories that stay with a community long after the last performance. That spirit continues in the work of Veiga Entertainment: connecting independent artists, DJs, businesses, community organizations, and opportunities through promotion, radio, interviews, editorial features, live experiences, outreach, and partnerships.

If you were there, what do you remember most about The House of Hip Hop? And what do you think open mics give artists that they can’t always find anywhere else?

Take a look back at The House of Hip Hop through this throwback performance from Slizzy.

Produced by Veiga and DJ Jo'Iyce, the series brought DMV artists and beyond, together on the stage at Landmark Mall. If you were there, enjoy the memories.

If you're discovering it now, welcome to a piece of DMV music history.
