Worship & Adult Formation

Join us for a Celtic Eucharist on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. Music for the service will be led by members of Allelu! (Lisa Whitfield, director) and harpist Lelia Lattimore. It is a wonderful opportunity to invite friends and family members to this quiet, contemplative service in this beautiful sacred space.

Save the date for our outdoor Blessing of the Animals service next Sunday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. Allelu!, our contemporary music group will provide the music. Bring your furry, feathered, or even scaly friends as we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi and God's creation.

The St. James Choir will offer Choral Evensong on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. Father David will be the Officiant, Tate Addis the service organist, and Phillip Haynie the cantor. Evensong will be followed by a short organ recital by Lee Cobb, Director of Music/Organist at Church of the Advent, Spartanburg. He will be playing works by Vierne, Howells, and Fletcher. Please join us for this beautiful offering of Evening Prayer and music!

Our next Saturday Eucharist will be Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. in the chapel. There will also be a Sunday evening service on Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. in the Nave. Click here to find the Saturday and Sunday evening schedule of services.

All Hallows' Eve and Blessing of the Costumes on Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. Did you know we have an official service for All Hallows' Eve? Join us by candlelight for this special service. This family-friendly service will include a procession and blessing of the costumes. Please dress in your Halloween best (nonviolent costumes only, please) for the blessing.

We are in particular and urgent need of ushers!  Contact Patti Brotherton if you are interested.

Gluten-free wafers are available during communion for those with celiac disease or medical issues. You may request this gluten-free option at communion from the priest.

Adult Formation

Joy Comes in the Morning: Our last session for this formation series is Sunday, Oct. 1 at 9 a.m. and will be led by Christoph Herpel as he reflects on his experiences of joy in the midst of his cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Join us on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5960851208

Stand, Sit, Kneel, Bow: Worshiping in the Episcopal Way will now be Oct. 15 and 22 so as not to interfere with the Ministry Fair at the 9 a.m. hour. Have you ever wondered why we do something—or don’t do something—in worship at St. James or in the Episcopal Church? Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour of the parish, explore the unique aspects of our tradition, play a few games to help us remember what’s special about our liturgy, and answer any and all questions you might have. This is a great and fun refresher for long-time Episcopalians and newcomers to the church.

Short Stories for the Soul is the second Tuesday of the month at noon in the St. James Room. Each month we read and discuss the spiritual insights of short stories selected by participants and clergy. Find this month's story on our website under Adult Formation.

Ministry & Fellowship

Introducing Passage Meditation, a new workshop offered every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the St. Mary's Room. Passage Meditation is a specific approach to meditation and spiritual living that draws inspiration from all major religions, especially as experienced by the mystics of varying traditions. On Sept 28, we will start with an introductory workshop format, which will last the first four weeks, to get everyone on the metaphorical same page. Click here to email Anne Murray for more info.

Sign up for Foyers!

Sign up for Foyers and get to know your St. James Family! Foyers is a set of randomly chosen dinner groups of 6-8 people that meet over the course of six months (or so) for delicious meals and sparkling conversation. Past participants will need to sign up again for the Fall Foyers groups as you are not automatically re-enrolled. If you had fun making new friends and enjoying delicious meals together, please consider signing up again and telling others to join you. For more info, email Laurie at leparkerson@gmail.com. Please sign up before October 17.

Yoga will take place each Wednesday in October. We will now have one yoga class (formerly known as Focused 45), beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Trinity Room. Participants need to arrive 10 minutes early and be ready to begin promptly. Individuals who might have come to chair yoga are welcome and we will adapt poses into chair versions. Contact the instructor, Dianne Hunter, for any questions.

The Parish Ministry Fair is next Sunday, Oct. 8 from 8 a.m. - noon! The Parish Hall will be full of displays and representatives from our many and various parish ministries, to answer your questions and discover how you can participate. What makes your heart sing? Serving in our community or in worship? Working with our children and youth? Caring for parishioners in need or for God's Creation? Sign up for a new group or ministry, meet new parishioners, spend time with friends and serve God together. Come join us for the fun, festivity and good work at St. James!

Common Ground: A new Sunday evening dinner gathering open to all will be Sunday, Oct. 8 at 6:15 p.m. at Southern Appalachian Brewery (SAB)! Join us for a fun, casual monthly gathering (perhaps while kids are in EYC if you have kids) on Sunday evening at Southern App for tasty local brews, food truck fare, and getting to know each other around an activity? Mëhfil Food Truck will be serving up award-winning Indian cuisine. No need to RSVP. Email Ann Broenner for more info.

ANNUAL PICNIC A SUCCESS! In spite of less than favorable weather, a grand time was had by all. Many thanks to all who helped make this event a success – shoppers, food preparers and servers, grill masters, runners, those who stayed to clean up, and of course, to the congregation for showing up! It was a joy to see the smiling faces of all ages as we shared food, conversation, and lots of laughs with new and old friends. Let’s do it again – same time, next year!

All women of St. James are invited to a nature walk at Flat Rock Park (55 Highland Golf Drive, Flat Rock) on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 10:15 a.m. We will meet at the big pavilion. Please bring a snack, drink and a friend and wear comfortable walking shoes. Please RSVP to Diane King at echomtn1@yahoo.com.
