Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in three women and one in four men experience some form of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetimes. In the United States, nearly 20 people per minute are abused by an intimate partner -- or more than 10 million victims and survivors per year.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an opportunity to educate yourself and others about this important issue and show those who are affected by domestic violence that they are not alone. You can do this in any number of ways:

Spotlight on Project SAGE

Annual Vigil

Project SAGE held their Annual Vigil on October 1. After some welcoming words from our new Executive Director, Kristen van Ginhoven, the Vigil commenced at Community Field in Lakeville and proceeded with a candlelight Remembrance Walk to the Project SAGE office on Porter Street. The Vigil was dedicated to honoring the 26 individuals who lost their lives to domestic violence in Connecticut over the past year. At the Vigil, we also reaffirmed Project SAGE’s commitment to ending relationship violence. A small reception was held following the Memorial Ceremony.

Project SAGE's solemn vigil

“We pour sand into sidewalk cracks to draw attention to issues we often overlook, like intimate partner violence, exploitation, and sexual assault in our own communities,” explained Kristen Pratt, operations manager at the Red Sand Project. “So, as you’re pouring the sand into the cracks, think about what vulnerabilities might be present all around you in your own community...”

CALL TO ACTION

Image-based sexual abuse is a rapidly growing form of sexual violence in which sexual images are created and/or distributed without the depicted individual's consent. Advancements in artificial intelligence have made it terrifyingly easy for people to become victims of image-based sexual abuse since realistic AI-generated or "deepfake" pornography can be created in a matter of seconds using just a photo of someone's face. Currently, there are NO federal laws protecting against image-based sexual abuse. Take action here: Ask Your Representatives to Co-Sponsor Legislation

ARTICLE

According to the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, Instagram is the #1 platform where sextortion happens, and it is being used by 68% of U.S. teens ages 15-17. In response to demands for higher safety standards for youth, Instagram has just rolled out stricter default settings and enhanced parent controls for teen accounts. FACT SHEET

With so many relationships now starting online, it’s never been more important to understand how the signs of an unhealthy relationship might look in a digital space. Just as healthy and unhealthy signs happen in person, they also happen online, and the unhealthy can be just as harmful when it happens online as when it happens in person. Check out this fact sheet for details: What Unhealthy Relationships Look Like - Digital Edition
