Dear Artisans,

As of this morning, there are exactly 34 bottles of the incredible 2022 Bosquet des Papes "Chante le Merle" Vieilles Vignes remaining in the United States.

We have all of them.

Every other merchant in the country is completely "Sold Out." And for good reason.

This tastes and ages like the legendary Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blue Chip, while costing $100 less.

In fact, this brilliant Chateauneuf made from 100-year-old vines goes head-to-head with the best:

The Smart Steal

The 200% Reality

The urgency to buy this specific French wine has never been higher. We are facing a volatile tariff landscape that could change the price of French imports overnight.

The Immediate Threat: A 25% tariff increase is set to trigger on February 1st.

The "Nuclear" Option: President Trump has explicitly threatened a 200% tariff on French Wine and Champagne as leverage in broader geopolitical negotiations

The Bottom Line: If these tariffs hit, the replacement cost of this bottle won't just rise; it could triple. If you love collectible Rhône wines, you must seize this opportunity before the geopolitical door slams shut.

Six Generations of the Boiron Family (Est. 1860)

The Boiron family is one of the oldest winemaking dynasties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They have been working the same soil since 1860, passing the torch from father to son for six generations. Currently, it is run by Nicolas Boiron and his wife Jeanne-Claire. Nicolas took the reins in 1995 and has been credited with refining the estate’s "rustic" edges into the "velvety power" they are known for today.

The 100-Year-Old "Secret Garden"

The Cuvée Chante le Merle isn't just "old vines"—it is ancient.

  • The Vines: The fruit comes from a tiny 3.5-hectare plot where the vines average 80 to 100 years of age.

  • The Complexity: These vines are spread across several elite lieux-dits (specific vineyard sites), including Pignan (famed for its sandy soils that give Rayas its elegance) and Montredon (famed for its heat-retaining galets roulés stones).

Traditionalist Champion like Clos des Papes

Unlike many modern producers who destem their grapes to make them "softer" and "fruity," Bosquet des Papes often utilizes whole-cluster fermentation for this cuvée.

  • This technique (favored by legends like Clos des Papes) adds a spicy, savory complexity and a structural "grip" that allows the wine to age for 20+ years.
  • The wine is aged in massive, neutral foudres (large oak vats) rather than small barriques, ensuring the wood never masks the pure expression of the old-vine fruit.

Why Artisan Collectors Love Them

In an era where "cult" Châteauneuf labels can feel overly polished or "international," Bosquet des Papes is celebrated for its authenticity. It smells of garrigue (lavender, thyme, and rosemary), it tastes of the sun, and it has the "iron" mineral core that only comes from deep-rooted, century-old vines.

Though delicious now, this is a wine for the cellar, built to evolve over the next 15 years, easily outlasting wines at twice the price.

Once these 34 bottles are gone, this vintage is closed for the U.S. market.

2022 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

"Cuvee Chante le Merle" Vieilles Vignes

95 Points - Wine Spectator:

"A seductive, smoky red, with real depth to its savory character. The dried strawberry leather and crunchy cherry fruit profile remains fresh and vibrant, studded with sanguine notes of smoked meat and dusty earth layered atop smoldering iron. The tannins are sculpted to a fine grain, bringing elegance to the texture. Delicious now, this has years ahead for those with the patience to cellar. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2026 through 2040. 2,000 cases made, 350 cases imported." - Kristen Bieler (Mar 2025)

94 Points - Vinous:

"The delicious 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 86% old-vine Grenache, 7% Syrah and 7% Mourvèdre. It enters the stage with prominent crushed violets, strawberry compote, licorice and black cherry. Meaty components add more nuance. Full-bodied and flamboyant, the 2022 comes across as modern and polished. Enveloped in ripe tannins, it culminates in a bold finale. (Drink between 2027-2042)." - Nocholas Greinacher (Jun 2024)

94 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:

"The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes is another brilliant wine from this estate. Classic Provençal garrigue, pepper, leather, and assorted darker cherry and blackberry fruit all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It certainly offers pleasure today, but it’s going to evolve gracefully over the coming 10-15 years. This old-vine cuvée is 86% Grenache and 7% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre coming from the Barbe d'Asne, Les Brusquières, Mont-Redon, and Pignan (nord) lieux-dits. It was not destemmed and was brought up in a mix of foudre, demi-muids, and concrete tanks. (Drink between 2024-2039)." (Oct 2024)

94 Points - Wine Advocate:

"Crafted from old vines planted on several terroirs, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes reveals an elegant, deep bouquet of dark wild berries, licorice, violets, wild strawberries and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textured, it's polished and enrobing with a delicate tannic frame, concluding with a long, ethereal finish inflected with dark berries. Matured for 15 months in foudres (60%), large barrels (30%) and concrete tanks for the rest, it was vinified without any destemming. 2030-2044."

94 Points - James Suckling:

"A textural, velvety and vibrant red made of 80% grenache, 10% syrah and 10% mourvedre. Aromas of dark cherries, blackberries, dried thyme, smoke and a touch of licorice. Full-bodied with plush tannins. Dense with a bright core of fruit and a kick of spices. Vivid and energetic with a long finish. Try after 2026." (Apr 2024)

Mastering the Experience

To truly respect a wine of this caliber, you must have the right tools and the right menu.

The Menu:

Classic Pairing: Rack of Lamb with a heavy crust of Rosemary & Thyme (echoes the "garrigue" in the wine).

Vegetarian: Wild Mushroom & Black Truffle Risotto (highlights the earthy "forest floor" notes).

Vegan: Roasted Eggplant & Lentil Cassoulet (rich texture to handle the tannins).

Cheese: Aged Comté or Manchego (salty crystals contrast perfectly with the fruit).

The Gear:

  • The Glass: We recommend the Gabriel-Glas StandArt to amplify the aromatics. > Shop Gabriel-Glas
  • The Preservation: This is a robust wine. Use your Coravin to enjoy a glass tonight and revisit the bottle in two weeks. > Shop Coravin Systems
