From Our President

Mary McElvogue

We all have one thing in common: we each make multiple decisions every day on a multitude of topics that affect our lives and the lives of others. One decision that I’d ask you to consider is serving a 2-year term on the SMBC Board of Directors.

Our election process is underway, and we are seeking candidates for our election roster. We will have 5 board positions to be filled (5 are currently fulfilling a 2nd term in 2025). Rotation of board members ensures new club members have an opportunity to serve and bring new ideas and fresh approaches to our club. Our board meets 6 times during the year. Each board member has a specific area of oversight. The commitment time is not large and it is a rewarding experience to know that the club’s future is being guided by knowledgeable and interested individuals. We are entering our 51st year as an organized cycling club – let’s preserve our great reputation and continue to provide cycling opportunities to Sarasota/Manatee Counties!

We're looking for passionate members to lead our rides. If you're interested in stepping up, our next Certified Ride Leader (CRL) training is happening on January 9th, 2025.

You can sign up by visiting the Event Calendar on our website.

So, what does it mean to be a Certified Ride Leader? CRLs are seasoned riders who adhere to our club guidelines to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable ride.

Only CRLs can organize and lead club rides. To become a CRL, you'll need to attend a Club Ride Leader Training Class and be mentored by a CRL.

A few key experiences are essential for a Ride Leader:

1. Group ride experience

2. Understanding and practicing pace line riding—since most of our SMBC rides are pace line rides, this skill is crucial.

3. Participate in several SMBC group rides to observe the CRL's role and safety practices.

By gaining these experiences, you can decide if becoming a Certified Ride Leader is the right path for you.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact John Wright at smbcrlc@gmail.com. Happy riding!
