Message from Mayor Kapszukiewicz
We have been mapping economic development and job growth in the city of Toledo and I am excited to announce that we just tipped over 5,000 new jobs created since January 2014. We are working right now to help another 20 companies this year add 1,300 more jobs and $250 million in investment.

The city's Building Inspection Division has been making changes the past 16 months to make it easier for companies to do business. I am also excited to announce that Toledo is on track to process more than 1,000 commercial permits for the third year in a row.

I want to thank our partners like the Regional Growth Partnership and the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce for helping companies in our community grow and thrive.
The Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation, along with other statewide partners, Lucas County, and the city of Toledo will celebrate In-Demand Jobs Week May 6-10. In-Demand Jobs Week promotes Ohio’s most in-demand and fastest growing industries through statewide hiring, education, and training events. There will be more than 340 community-led events hosted by business and education leaders across the state, including some here in Toledo. These include job fairs, business tours, cyber competitions, and hands-on learning experiences. Click this link for a full list of In-Demand Jobs Week events across Ohio.
Also, I want to congratulate the city of Toledo employee team that competed last week and won the quarter finals of Erie Hack 2.0, an innovative water-solutions competition organized by the Cleveland Water Alliance.

Erie Hack 2.0 brings together researchers, designers, engineers, developers, and students around the region to build teams and develop innovations to accelerate technology solutions to Lake Erie’s most pressing problems.

Our "Lead Pipe Monitoring" team, which was comprised of city employees Anthony Berardinelli, Michelle Hughes-Tucker, Edith Kippenhan, and Peter Park, and University of Toledo employee Sakib Patan, proposed to confirm water delivered to customers throughout the area does not contain lead by installing a pH sensor in a pump station servicing neighborhoods that still have large amounts of lead service lines. The measure would confirm that corrosion control measures are being met. This is currently done on an annual basis but the team's proposal would allow the city to monitor the water on a daily basis.

Winners of the regional competitions in Toledo, Detroit, Toronto, Cleveland, Erie, and Buffalo - including our team - advance to the semifinals on June 5 in Detroit. Winners of the semifinals advance to the final on June 20 in Cleveland. Congratulations team!

Public Utilities
Paperless Billing
The Department of Public Utilities now offers customers the option to “go green” by choosing paperless billing instead of printed statements through the mail. Paperless customers will now receive a $1 credit for each utility statement that is not printed and mailed.

Paperless billing customers are notified by email that utility bills are ready to view. The amount due and due date are prominently displayed on the email. The Department of Public Utilities has offered online billing since May 2015, which has been an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective way to improve customer service.

“Each week, more people sign up for online billing and paperless billing,” said Public Utilities Director Ed Moore. “To date, there are 23,911 online billing customers, of which, 3,562 have also signed up for paperless-billing. We are really excited to offer this $1 incentive and we hope customers will take advantage of this as soon as possible.”

Additional information on how to sign up for paperless billing through the online billing process is available at www.bit.ly/GoPaperlessDPU .

Toledo In The News
Seven Unexpectedly Great American Cities For a Weekend Visit It might surprise you to learn that everything you need for a memorable, culture-packed getaway is smack dab in the heart of the Midwest. Sure, there’s plenty of glamour and good eats to be had in a city like  New York City  or San Francisco, but they’re also more crowded and a helluva a lot more expensive. In cities like Toledo, Minneapolis, and Madison, you’ll find charm in spades alongside hipper offerings like emerging art scenes, cool craft brewers and increasingly renowned restaurants.

Where the Good Jobs Are You dropped out of college, or decided straight out of high school that college was not your thing. Here’s some advice if you are looking for a job: Stay out of Washington. Don’t go to New York. Forget about San Francisco. If you want to make anything near a decent wage, head for Toledo, Des Moines or Birmingham.
