Leaving Your Baby in the
Arms of a Caring Person
|
|
In the July issue, we talked about the services that A Safe Haven for Newborns provides and how we reach out to offer support to the distressed pregnant girls and women. And how this safety net reaches to all of Florida’s 67 counties and even crosses state lines to offer hope and support to those in other states. This month, I would like to tell you about the caring, compassionate folks who receive the surrendered infant.
We are very fortunate to have as our partners the caring professionals at the hospital emergency rooms, the EMS, and the 24/7 staffed fire stations to accept the newborns. These professionals humanize the difficult moments these young mothers are going through and empathize with them as they surrender their infants. Placing them in their arms and saying goodbye is an emotional moment for both.
These professionals only ask if the mother would like to share any health-related information that would affect the baby; otherwise, they do not ask any other questions nor do they judge the mother’s actions. They simple accept the infant, less than seven days old, and give the mom a card with a simple message and a phone number should she need any type of help such as medical attention or if she needs a referral to speak with a counselor.
After the birth mother leaves, the newborn is examined by the paramedics and taken to the nearest hospital for further evaluation. It is the hospital's personnel that contacts an adoption agency in the area where the baby was surrendered for placement with a couple that has been waiting to adopt a baby to make their family complete.

Our work is far from over, but together with the support of our partners, we are saving lives and making a difference. What is most important is that there have been zero abandonments in five of the past ten years — everyone is helped, we are never judgmental, and we do not charge for our services.
Through our 24/7 multilingual, confidential helpline, A Safe Haven for Newborns is just a phone call away. The services that are provided include referrals to counseling, shelters, maternity homes, providing temporary housing, help for abuse issues, suicide calls, providing the newborn with baby items, and connecting them to a Medicaid representative. As of this writing, 341 newborns are finding their way in the world with their forever families.
I am very grateful for the trust and confidence expressed by so many -- Thank You.
As always, sending you my best,
Nick

LAUREN PASTRANA TO HOST CHAMPION FOR NEWBORNS VIRTUAL TELETHON
We are honored to have Emmy-nominated, multimedia journalist and CBS4 News co-anchor, Lauren Pastrana, as our host, once again, for the Champion for Newborns Virtual Telethon on Saturday, October 23, at 7 PM. For the past five years, Ms. Pastrana has graciously said “yes” every time we have asked her to be a part of our Safe Haven for Newborns events. She has generously shared her talent and charisma first as host of our signature gala and now for the virtual telethon. And for that, we are very grateful.
Will you be part of our Champion for Newborns Virtual Telethon and join us in our life-saving mission of saving the most innocent and defenseless among us — the newborn? The one-hour virtual telethon's goal is to raise funds for A Safe Haven for Newborns and to raise public awareness of the risks these infants face of being abandoned.
You will be able to access the telethon from the comfort of your home, anywhere in the world where there is an internet connection, from your computers and mobile devices and enjoy the entertainment, learn about our life saving program, and participate in our silent auction. And, of course, make a donation to the cause.
Sponsorships opportunities are still available. We invite you to be a part of this life-saving mission by becoming a sponsor for the telethon. Please visit our Champion for Newborns Virtual Telethon page to see what is available.

The World is 9 Times Brighter
With the Arrival of These Newborns
|
|
It's been a busy year for us at A Safe Haven for Newborns. Our family has grown to 341 Safe Haven Babies; and there are still four more months to go for 2021. The nine babies born are: Wyatt, Emma, Chloe, Grayson, Santiago, Ezra, Philly, Jack, and Cole. They are now in the loving arms of their forever families.
It is a blessing and a privilege to be able to save the precious life of an innocent child. We cannot save every infant and guide every troubled mother, but we can make a difference for as many as possible -- we will never stop trying.
