Water crisis reports now available; budget proposal includes funding for water resiliency

Following a water outage that affected service in parts of Henrico for several days in early January, the county hired two firms to conduct a review of its water infrastructure and communications during the crisis. These firms presented their findings to the Board of Supervisors on Feb. 11.

AquaLaw PLC reviewed Henrico’s response to the crisis, focusing specifically on actions taken by the Department of Public Utilities. Whitman, Requardt & Associates LLP reviewed the water utility infrastructure in Henrico and provided recommendations for future projects.

Henrico’s proposed budget for FY2025-26 includes $50 million in capital project funding for water resiliency. The Board of Supervisors will review the budget in public sessions in March and will vote to approve it in April. The approved budget will take effect beginning July 1.

Cleanup from winter storms continues

Crews continue to remove branches and other debris from the edges of the county's roads after more 400 trees toppled during the recent winter storms.

Residents may continue to notice branches and trees on the side of roads for the next few weeks as road maintenance crews work diligently to make it to each site.

200,000 bluegill find new home at Virgil R. Hazelett Reservoir at Cobbs Creek

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources introduced about 200,000 bluegill - a species of sunfish - to their new home in the Virgil R. Hazelett Reservoir at Cobbs Creek.

The stocking began Feb. 25 with juvenile fish trucked from a state hatchery in King and Queen County. Subsequent deliveries will add additional species to the reservoir.

"The reservoir will offer a wide variety of habitats with significant depth changes, abundant standing timber and shallow shoreline areas and should be able to support a variety of fisheries," said Hunter Hatcher, an aquatic biologist who oversaw the release.

The reservoir, located in Cumberland County, is owned by Henrico County and designed to release stored water into the James River to augment flows, as needed, during periods of drought. The reservoir is not yet operational or open to the public for fishing, boating or other recreational uses.

Public Utilities addresses rumors about refuse collection

Henrico County is preparing to expand - not reduce - refuse collection service!

Public Utilities has ordered additional collection trucks and is finalizing a plan to expand trash pickup to more neighborhoods and communities. More details will be shared in the coming months.

Public Utilities is aware of rumors circulating that Henrico may discontinue collection service to some areas. Please know these rumors are FALSE! If you've received information suggesting refuse collection may be reduced, please contact Public Utilities at (804) 501-4275.

Henrico awarded for full-depth reclamation paving process

Public Works is the proud recipient of the Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association's 2025 Special Recognition Award for Excellence in Full-Depth Reclamation!

Full-depth reclamation is a paving process that removes and reuses the existing pavement as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional paving methods. This method also lasts longer and costs less than using new asphalt.

Henrico is one of only a few localities nationwide taking advantage of this paving method. Public Works estimates the county has saved roughly $15 million by using this method for 50 lane miles of road countywide, with more projects on the way!
