FEBRUARY IS HEALTHY HEART MONTH
10 Small Changes to Help Support Heart Health
Great things come in small packages. While this might not make you think of heart health, small lifestyle changes can have a positive impact on cardiovascular wellness. Consider these simple practices that can lead to meaningful benefits for your heart.
- Rise, Shine, & Eat Breakfast. Eat your breakfast! A study assessing whether specific eating habits affect coronary heart disease (CHD) risk indicated that men who skip breakfast have a 27% higher risk of CHD.1 And ladies, this could apply to you as well, so make sure you eat a nutrient-balanced breakfast every day.
- The Perfect Portion. Did you know that adults now consume 300 calories more per day than they did in 1985?2 Additionally, more than 70% of US adults are either overweight or obese.3 Those with a healthy weight are less likely to develop heart disease.3 Additionally, portion control can help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight, but watch out for packaged foods and restaurant meals that actually give you two or more servings.
- You Never Lose When You Snooze. According to the American Heart Association, poor sleep quality is linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure (a risk factor for heart disease). Slower metabolism and difficulty losing weight can also be attributed to sleep deprivation. So get your z’s by aiming for six to eight hours of sleep each night.
- Go for a Walk. You can also swim, run, or dance. But whatever you do, make sure you get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week or 25 minutes of vigorous exercise at least three days per week to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure and maintain a healthy weight. By doing this, a woman can help reduce her risk of coronary heart disease by up to 40%.

Protect Your Heart with CoQ10
|
Although CoQ10 plays a key role in the body, most healthy people have enough CoQ10 naturally. There is some evidence that adding more -- in the form of CoQ10 supplements -- may be beneficial. Increasing age and some medical conditions are associated with dropping levels of CoQ10. But in these cases, it’s uncertain that adding CoQ10 will have an effect.
CoQ10 has been used to treat many different conditions. There's evidence that CoQ10 supplements can lower blood pressure slightly. CoQ10 is also used to treat heart failure and other heart conditions, possibly helping to improve some symptoms and lessen future cardiac risks when combined with regular medications ...
Some preliminary evidence suggests that CoQ10 may help to prevent or treat the adverse effects, such as muscle pains and liver problems, of taking statin-type cholesterol drugs.
Preliminary studies have shown that CoQ10 may slow, but not stop, the progression of Alzheimer's disease...
CoQ10 has also been studied as a preventive treatment for migraine headaches, though it may take several months to work. It was also been studied for low sperm count, cancer, HIV, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s disease, gum disease, and many other conditions. … Although CoQ10 is sometimes sold as an energy supplement, there is no evidence that it will boost energy in a typical person. - WebMD

CardioMetabolic Profile Test
|
This advanced test evaluates risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) plus metabolic factors associated with metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes. In addition to the traditional CVD risk factors, the test includes much more clinically sensitive atherogenic lipoprotein sub-species, the primary apolipoproteins, arterial inflammation and the activity of the lipoprotein- associated phospholipase- A2 (PLAC). PLAC activity is a very sensitive indicator of active atherogenesis and instability of advanced arterial plaque. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is centered around insulin resistance and atherogenic dyslipoproteinemia, and is a risk factor associated with CVD and kidney disease. The test includes cystatin C to better assess glomerular filtration, and 1,5-anhydroglucitol (Glycomark®) that is a better indicator of hyperglycemic episodes than HbA1C. The primary adipokines associated with insulin sensitivity and hepatic fatty acid metabolism are also addressed.

3 Tips to Doing Detox Right
Nowadays, detoxing is on everyone’s mind, especially when living in increasingly toxic environments and experiencing negative health effects.
If you think that a detox might be right for you, there’s a way to do it right and ensure you are safely achieving the results you are looking for.
Here are three easy tips to keep in mind to make the most out of your detox:
- Do it at least twice a year.Your body is always detoxing—nonstop, 24/7—but it may not be doing it in the most efficient way because of nutrient deficiencies, stress, and even genetic factors. Based on my experience, I believe people can benefit from doing a dedicated detox protocol twice per year at the change of seasons (typically in March/April and in September/October). These types of detoxes will be a bit more rigorous than a gentle daily detox and should involve dietary changes, as well as the inclusion of specific supplements and some lifestyle changes. They may also be 10 days long for those who are relatively healthy or 28 days for individuals who require a more thorough inner “reset.” In addition to the biannual detoxes, I also think it is helpful to do some daily detoxing by eating your best, taking supportive nutrients, and reducing your stress to the best of our ability.

The Clear Change
®
10-Day Program
featuring UltraClear RENEW
®
is designed to enhance the body’s natural metabolic detoxification process while providing adequate fuel for both cleansing and other daily activities—providing energy and support for overall well-being. Many people benefit from completing a 10-day metabolic detoxification program two to three times a year.*
Metabolic detoxification is a natural bodily process that consists of 3 major detoxification pathways: Phase I (functionalization), Phase II (conjugation), and Phase III (antiporter activity). In this process, fat soluble compounds must undergo transformation and become water-soluble before they can be excreted.
The 10-day program is ideal for anyone wanting to benefit from an occasional “Spring Cleaning” or somebody who eats a reasonably healthy diet, exercises regularly, and manages stress adequately. It is also ideal for individuals who scored >30 on the
Metabolic Detoxification Questionnaire

Long-Life Noodles with Beef & Chinese Broccoli
Noodles are a key part of Chinese New Year celebrations because they symbolize long life. We love this recipe for the tradition because it's super-customizable based on your tastes. Try swapping in chicken for the steak. Can't find Chinese broccoli? Use broccolini instead. Or swap out the mushrooms and broccoli altogether for snow peas and carrots.
Source: EatingWell Magazine, January/February 2019
Ingredients
- 8 ounces whole-wheat spaghetti
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
- 3 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 3 tablespoons Shaoxing rice wine
- 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
- 1 ½ teaspoons cornstarch
- ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper
- 1 tablespoon peanut oil
- 10 ounces Chinese broccoli or broccolini, halved and cut into 1-inch pieces
- 2 cups sliced mushrooms
- 12 ounces flank steak, trimmed and thinly sliced (or chicken)
- 2 cloves garlic, grated
- Toasted sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
Directions
Cook noodles according to package directions. Rinse and drain well. Toss with sesame oil. Set aside.
Meanwhile, whisk together oyster sauce, rice wine, soy sauce, cornstarch and white pepper in a small bowl; set near the stove.
Heat a large flat-bottom wok or large cast-iron skillet over high heat. Add peanut oil and swirl to coat. Add broccoli and mushrooms; cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes. Add steak and garlic; cook, stirring, until the steak is no longer pink on the outside, 2 to 3 minutes more. Add the sauce and bring to a boil; cook for 1 minute. Add the noodles and toss to coat. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, if desired.
