Historical Tidbit: One of Brockton's Oldest Voters

5a20d21c-ee09-4e9d-85d5-17d0086360fe image

On November 6, 1956, Stanley Bauman took this picture of one of Brockton's oldest voters, Mrs. Alice L. Leonard, 91, of 366 Rockland Street who went to the polls to vote for Eisenhower. Born in 1866, Mrs. Leonard was granted the right to vote at the age of 54. This picture was of the last presidential election she would vote in as she died in 1959. The first state primary which women could vote in was held on September 7,1920, and then in the national election held on November 4, 1920.

Climate Can Do - Carpooling!

Looking for an easy way to save the environment and money? Look no further than carpooling! Seemingly simple in nature, the act of carpooling and sharing a ride with co-workers, friends, and others has a profound impact on both our ecosystems and wallets. Carpooling reduces carbon footprints and improves air quality whilst simultaneously lowering overall fuel costs, and in some cases qualifying eligible participants for tax incentives! For more information on carpooling, van-pooling, and other alternatives visit Mass.Gov.

Wildlands Trust And Green Team Enhance Brockton's Green Areas

The Wildlands Trust Green Team is no strangers to putting in the work to keep Brockton's green areas green! The Green Team has been hard at work all summer. They participated in exploration hikes, bench building and painting, grounds cleanup, outdoor classroom building and learned from conservation professionals.

On Monday, August 17, their time and skills were put to work at DW Field Park and the Brockton Garden Club triangle. They bagged weeds and clippings and put in new plantings. After working and a good lunch, the team attended an informative presentation on environmental related topics. Huge thanks to G. Norwood Landscaping for donating plantings and the free cabbage and rhubarb for the students to take home.

Summmahh!!!

“Let us dance in the sun, wearing wild flowers in our hair...”~ Susan Polis Schutz

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.”

~ John Lubbock

"Aaah, summer - that long anticipated stretch of lazy, lingering days, free of responsibility and rife with possibility. It's a time to hunt for insects, master handstands, practice swimming strokes, conquer trees, explore nooks and crannies, and make new friends.” ~ Darell Hammond

"People take pictures of the Summer, just in case someone thought they had missed it, and to proved that it really existed."

~ Ray Davies

As we grasp these last remaining days of summer, pause, breathe it in. The lush green of the full trees, the splash of the waves….

Summmahh, Summmahh, Summmahh!!!

: ) ~ Jacquie
