A Message from Headmaster Scott
Dear Archway Trivium West Families,
We believe that beauty is not merely in the eye of the beholder, and that classic forms and works of western music, drama, and visual art should play a central role in forming aesthetic judgement.
This is a powerful statement that stands at odds with much of modern thinking on the subject. Placing beauty exclusively in the eye of the beholder reduces the idea of beauty to mere personal taste. This is usually done in good will as an attempt to be respectful of other’s perspectives, but in doing this we risk distorting meaning in a way that hinders both understanding and communication. When I say that a flower is beautiful, I am making an observation about the flower itself, not about my opinion on the flower. This is more easily understood by exchanging the word beautiful for another adjective. When I say that the flower is red, I am clearly referring to a particular quality (redness) and not a subjective opinion. In this same fashion, the statement about the beauty of the flower is a reference to a particular quality. The hard part for human beings is that most of a flower’s qualities (color, size, living/dead, smell, etc.) are easily identified in both flowers and other objects whereas beauty is not. The other qualities are small and simple ideas, but beauty is a big idea—one of the biggest. Beauty, like truth and goodness, is central to our understanding of humanity. It requires the same level of inquiry and instruction as truth and goodness. It is not something to be rapidly dismissed because it is hard to comprehend or articulate. It is to be wrestled with and scrutinized. This is what we expect of our scholars and the classic works of the west are our avenue. Neither we nor our students need be satisfied with the simplistic, nihilist view of beauty so prevalent in our modern world. As we engage with these great works of drama, music and visual art, we can deepen both our understanding and appreciation for beautiful things.
Heartily Devoted,
Dr. Clay Scott

This coming Tuesday, local elections will take place and, depending on where you live, many ballots have school bond and override measures to consider. However you choose to vote, take note that those measures relate to allocations of property taxes that do not affect charter schools like Trivium. Because our enrollment is not limited by neighborhood boundaries, we do not benefit from any property taxes that are assigned to fund education. This is one of the major reasons for the disparity in funding between Trivium and our district schools, a significant funding gap that results in our need to ask for family partnership through Community Investment.
If you have questions or concerns about the inequity in charter school funding, please reach out to our Academy Giving Manager, Annann Hong, at ahong@triviumprep.org or ahong@archwaytrivium.org or call her at (773) 307-6779. If you are interested in what is being done and how to help address charter school funding disparities, please consider signing up to get text alerts from the Arizona Charter School Association (ACSA – www.azcharters.org). Thank you to our families that help to support the education we have chosen for our children at Trivium through tax-deductible Community Investment gifts and pledges.
